My Easter gift - something to feel good about.

Not all wealthy people are a plague on humanity. Some do understand that society does have an obligation to protect and defend the least among us.

Rick Steves: 'I just gave away a $4M apartment complex'

Travel guru Rick Steves has donated a 24-unit apartment property in Lynnwood to YWCA Seattle King Snohomish to house homeless women and their families.

Steves, who makes millions selling travel books, started buying cheap apartments 20 years ago as a retirement investment. In 2005, he bought Trinity Place and partnered with the YWCA and the Edmonds Noon Rotary Club to operate the property. Steves planned to eventually will the complex to the YWCA but is deeding it over now.

*
Mary Anne Dillon, YWCA executive director of Snohomish County Services, said that were it not for Trinity Place, some of the residents would be homeless. "Having reliable housing options like Trinity Place is not only crucial – it’s a matter of life and death for families in our community,” she said in a press release.

Steves, 61, said that in addition to aiding the homeless, he gave the property away because of the election of President Donald Trump and the rise of a new "greed-is-good ethic in our government."

Happy Easter! Easter is a symbol of hope and new life. It's good.

Jesus said to the rich young ruler, "one thing you still lack. Sell all you have and give to the poor. Then come and follow me."

Redemption for the rich is generosity, like this wonderful man just did.

I had read somewhere a while back that Rick Steves is heavily involved in social activism and charitable work, so I went to his website and in the link you can find all the charities that he is involved with.

While I do not have the details yet, I have heard that a young couple we know is looking into donating the bulk of their income to charitable causes. We attended their wedding two and a half years ago. Both the bride and groom are attorneys and they paid for the wedding and a very nice reception themselves.

Their wedding invitation asked guests who wished to do so, to donate to their local food bank instead of sending a wedding gift. Now I am hearing that they are planning on donating the major portion of their incomes to charity now. It lifts my heart up to hear stories like this of two young (in their 30's) and very successful people who are looking outside themselves to do good in their community.

Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
