Good Morning! Let's focus on food this morning (recipés are welcome). Any other topics are also very welcome.

A Greenpeace exposé on tuna being stored in oil drums

FUEL SLICK HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM LAND

Faintly at first, a whiff of diesel on the wind – how a fuel spill far at sea could be connected to your tuna.
Ahead of us was a rainbow coloured fuel slick, probably over 200 square meters of it, out in the middle of the ocean.

It's good to know where your tuna is coming from. Check for the dolphin icon on the can to make sure "no dolphins are killed harvesting this tuna."

Mediterranean Diet

Fruit and vegetables aren't only good for a healthy body; they protect your mind too
Eating a Mediterranean diet or other healthy dietary pattern, comprising of fruit, vegetables, legumes, and nuts and low in processed meats, is associated with preventing the onset of depression, according to research. A large study of 15,093 people suggests depression could be linked with nutrient deficits.
[…]
A limitation of this study was that the results are based on self-reported dietary intake and a self-reported clinical diagnosis of depression. More research is needed to predict the role of nutrient intake for neurophysiological requirements and identify whether it is minerals and vitamins or proteins and carbohydrates that cause depression.

We can always test this on ourselves. Try the Mediterranean diet for 6 weeks and see what happens.

KALE, a superfood

Kale: Health Benefits & Nutrition Facts
Kale is a leafy green that appears on many lists of trendy superfoods, and probably with good reason. Kale is highly nutritious, containing high levels of vitamins, minerals, and brain-boosting phytonutrients.

GREEN SOUP

Ingredients
1 bunch of spinach 8 oz.
1 bunch kale, 8 oz.
4 -5 green pinions, sliced white and green parts
1/2 cup loosely packed cilantro
pinch sea salt
1 - 2 Yukon Gold potatoes
1 medium yellow onion 1-1/2 tbsp olive oil
dry sherry
1 - 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
3 cups vegetable stock
juice of 1/2 lemon

Wash greens, thoroughly, trim off stems and slice the leaves. Combine the spinach and kale, green onions, cilantro in a large pot with 3 cups of water and pinch of salt. Chop up potatoes and add it to the pot. Bring the water to a boil, turn down the heat, cover the pot and let soup simmer for 1/2 hour.

Meanwhile, chop the onion , heat the olive oil in a skillet and cook the onion over a low flame until it is golden brown and soft. This could take 1/2 hour. Don’t hurry, stir once in a while and let the slow cooking develop the onion’s sweetness. Deglaze the pan at the end with a little sherry and add this to the soup.

Add enough of the vegetable broth to make the soup a soup and puree the soup in batches but not too long because potatoes can turn gummy.

Return the soup to the pot bring back to a simmer, add black pepper, a pinch of cayenne, and lemon juice.

Serves 4 - 6

This is a recipe that is so simply tasty that I have never tired of, even after over 20 years of regular preparation.
I also like the flavor of kale in a vegetable stir-fry.

Kale and Potato Soup with Red Chili

This recipe came from The Greens Cookbook by Deborah Madison. A wonderful book that all veggie lovers should own. The recipes in this book are from the Greens Restaurant when it was in it's hey-day.

The Stock
The ingredients of this soup supply plenty of flavor, so use water to prepare a simple stock using the stems of the kale.

The Soup
1 bunch kale
3 Tablespoons virgin olive oil
1 medium red or yellow onion, diced into ½ inch squares
6 cloves garlic, peeled and sliced
1 small dried red chili, seeded and chopped, or ½ teaspoon chili flakes
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon salt
4 medium red potatoes (about 1 pound), scrubbed and diced into ½ inch cubes
2 teaspoons nutritional yeast (optional)
7 cups water or stock
Pepper
Creme fraiche or sour cream (optional)

Using a sharp knife or kitchen shears cut the ruffled kale leaves off their stems, which are very tough and take a long time to cook. Cut the leaves into pieces roughly 2 inches square, wash them well, and set them aside.

Heat the olive oil in a soup pot, add the onion, garlic, chili, bay leaf, and salt, and cook over medium-high heat for 3 or 4 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the potatoes and the yeast, if using, plus a cup of the water or stock. Stir together, cover, and cook slowly for 5 minutes.

Add the kale, cover, and steam until it is wilted, stirring occasionally. Pour in the rest of the water or stock, bring to a boil, and then simmer slowly, covered, until the potatoes are quite soft, 30 to 40 minutes.

Use the back of a wooden spoon to break up the potatoes by pressing them against the sides of the pot, or puree a cup or two of the soup in a blender and return it to the pot. This will make a unifying background for the other elements.

Taste the soup for salt and add a generous grinding of black pepper. If possible, let the soup sit for an hour or so before serving to allow the flavors to further develop. If desired add a spoonful of creme fraiche or sour cream. Serves 4 - 6.

the unpredictable super power?

Pressed by Hewitt on if he would send American troops in to neutralize Pakistan’s nuclear capability should they go rogue, Trump said he didn’t want to reveal his military plans to a potential rival.

“People can’t know exactly what your intentions are,” Trump told Hewitt. “You want to have a certain amount of, you want to have a little bit of guess work for the enemy.”

"This has nothing to do with lack of knowledge, because I think I know as much about Pakistan as most other people,” Trump insisted. "But I will tell you, I don’t want to broadcast my intentions.”

"I want to be unpredictable with this,” he continued. "I don’t want to be like Obama, where he’s always saying you know, we’re going to do, in two weeks, we’re going to do this, and then we’re going to do that.”

I think Obama was changed as President by his briefing every day for 1/2 hour with National Security. He seemed so scared after a while.
I can't imagine a volatile person like Trump going through that and not 'shooting from the hip.' Watch out world if he gets in.

I have noticed that there is not much commentary on the Morning Open thread until later in the day. Often I do not even get one comment until after 11 am Eastern, especially now that smiley is traveling. He and I seemed to be the only early morning folks here. Lotlizard and Lapsed Lawyer usually visit and post before the Morning Open Thread is posted.

The next couple of days, I will be scarce myself because we are having back to back overnight guests this week. Tomorrow, my MIL and SIL are coming through on their way north and are spending the night with us. Then we turn right around with overnight guests on Friday. I will be hustling with laundry and all on Thursday. Smile

I am looking forward to hearing the Pope's speech to Congress and I am very much hoping the main emphasis of that speech will be climate change. It may take the Pope to shame world leaders into taking drastic steps on climate change and the US should be leading the way. Just another reason why I am supporting Bernie for President.

Catholic congressman says he will boycott Pope Francis over climate change stance

Admission to Pope Francis's Thursday address to a joint session of Congress is one of the toughest tickets in Washington in years. But one Catholic congressman says he will not be taking his seat for the speech in protest of the prelate's activism against climate change.

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) said in an op-ed published Friday on Townhall.com that he has "both a moral obligation and leadership responsibility to call out leaders, regardless of their titles, who ignore Christian persecution and fail to embrace opportunities to advocate for religious freedom and the sanctity of human life."

"If the Pope stuck to standard Christian theology, I would be the first in line," he wrote. "If the Pope spoke out with moral authority against violent Islam, I would be there cheering him on. If the Pope urged the Western nations to rescue persecuted Christians in the Middle East, I would back him wholeheartedly. But when the Pope chooses to act and talk like a leftist politician, then he can expect to be treated like one."

are retreating to the bunkers, preparing for world's end.

I find it interesting that for years these gasbags have claimed Jesus told them to run for president, but now, in this cycle, Jesus is telling them to stop running for president.

First Rick Perry, the farm animal, said:

When I gave my life to Christ, I said, "Your ways are greater than my ways, your will superior to mine." Today I submit that his will remains a mystery, but some things have become clear. That is why today I am suspending my campaign for the presidency of the United States.

Now, the half-brain Scott Walker says:

While I was sitting in church yesterday, the pastor's words reminded me that the Bible is full of stories about people who are called to be leaders in unusual ways. Today, I believe that I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive conservative message will rise to the top of the field. With this in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately.

Also amusing that when John Paul Jones II and Nazi Ratzinger were yammering on about commies and homos and wayward lady parts and such, the wingers said everyone the world over needed to Hear and Heed all words of he who would be pope. But now that there is this Francis fellow, the wingers say popes are silly and wrong and should be ignored completely.

If they honestly believe that it's coming down to it, that's what they choose to do? Selfish bastards. Then they boast about it on teevee. I've never gotten through more than a few minutes of the show before beginning to talk back to the screen--What they hell is wrong with you? People are in trouble and you're hoarding and hiding? You worthless pricks!...I remember when the stations that show that dreck used to actually be somewhat worthwhile. The Learning Channel. Pffft.

have prepper shows on The Learning Channel? Wow. What else does that channel now help people "learn"? Anthrax assembly? Build your own speedloader? Proper placement of land mines? Constructing dungeons for captives big and small? Celebrity flamethrower tutorial? Protecting the potato patch: bazookas, or mortars?

the TV, that is. We got rid of the satellite and we can only get one station here without, so we just do not turn it on. After the initial withdrawal period, it has made our lives much less stressful. Smile

when shaharazade and I first met we lived in a small town on the Oregon coast, pre-cable. We could get one radio station that played mostly country and western tunes of the day (Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful girl...) and one television station. But if we visited friends on the other side of the hill we could get a different tv station.

I had a thought today as we walked along. As we get older we see things as they were, as well as seeing things as they are. Portland is growing, getting more developed. There's a little shopping mall area that was redone but when I look at it I can feel how it used to be. Obviously that's different from how newcomers see it.

Been reworking a a sorta-self portrait I set aside over a year ago. I have the pencil part to where I'm kinda happy with it. I took it from Theda Bara as Cleopatra and made it into me as my rubenesque giver goddess self. The inking is driving me mad. Good thing I save it at every stage just in case I fuck it up...LOL~

just Wow!

It’s already been heavily reported how badly the first class of New Syrian Forces (NSF), also known as Division 30, did after being trained by the US and sent into Syria. There were 54 of them to start, and last week Centcom conceded there were only “four or five left.” This may still look like a runaway success compared to the second class.
The second class entered Syria by way of Turkey on Friday, and according to reports there were between 70 and 75 of them in total. Today, reports out of Syria suggest that the group immediately took its weapons and vehicles to al-Qaeda territory and turned them all over to them.
A statement from al-Qaeda’s Syria branch said the group’s membership had agreed to give them everything in return for “safe passage,” and that the leader of the second class, Anas Ibrahim Obeid, plans to issue a statement repudiating the US training strategy.

I didn't think that things could go worse than the first training class, but I've been proven wrong.
