McBride Day

Sarah McBride was president of the American University student body when she came out as transgender in 2012. Having worked on Beau Biden's 2010 campaign for AG of Delaware and Jack Markel's 2008 gubernatorial campaign, she had gained some connections that earned her a spot as a White House intern...becoming the first openly transgender woman to work in the White House.

In January 2013 Sarah joined the board of directors of Equality Delaware and was instrumental in Delaware passing anti-discrimination protections for transgender people. Sarsh moved on to work at the Center for American Progress. New Statesman has predicted that she will be the first transgender American to be elected to high office,

Sarah has posted a viral selfie to social media:

Here's the complete text:

Here I am using a women's restroom in North Carolina that I'm technically barred from being in.
They say I'm a pervert.
They say I'm a man dressed as a woman.
They say I'm a threat to their children.
They say I'm confused.
They say I'm dangerous.
And they say accepting me as the person I have fought my life to be seen as reflects the downfall of a once great nation.

I'm just a person. We are all just people. Trying to pee in peace. Trying to live our lives as fully and authentically as possible. Barring me from this restroom doesn't help anyone. And allowing me to continue to use this bathroom - just without fear of discrimination and harassment - doesn't hurt anyone.

Stop this. We are good people.

Meanwhile transgender comedican Jaye McBride (no relation that I know of), while carping about being distracted from Game of Thrones, had some things to say about Curt Schilling.

About a year ago, I was having a good ol’ time just doing comedy, travelling, telling jokes and the notion of a ‘bathroom bill’ was a rarity that I didn’t even have to think about because it only came up in redneck states and here in the capitol of the Empire State no one even cared. Fast forward to today where every day I see new memes online equating being transgender with being a pedophile. You know why? Because I occasionally pee in public. This is what makes me feel less Eddard Stark and more Cersei Baratheon.

You know what these ‘bathroom bills’ are? They’re bills that are being introduced to give transgender people the same protection that others get regardless of their race, gender, religion, etc. because we don’t currently have that. Schools are also involved to protect a group of children who are among the most vulnerable. Currently, in over 30 states I could be fired from a job for being trans, denied housing, placed in a male prison just for being someone that is dealing with a medical condition in a manner that every medical and mental health organization endorses. That’s it. But politicians keep pushing to turn it into a ‘slippery slope’ argument somehow bringing predators into the mix trying to turn my existence into a criminal case. I’m just being me! It’s not like I’ve been accused of poisoning my nephew the king.

And by the way, I hate public restrooms. I weigh each drink of water I take on a long trip just because I’d like to avoid using a public restroom. I’m way too much of a germophobe to voluntarily walk into a public restroom without a hazmat suit so believe me, bathrooms provide almost know enjoyment other than the knowledge that emptying my bladder means I can go longer without peeing in a rest area for a while. It gives me the same relief that Sansa Stark felt after Joffrey’s murder. Sure it feels good now but what does the future hold? I feel like I just walked out of a pit of fire with three baby dragons perched on my shoulders.

Jaye posted the following meme-generator:

Or how about a meme with priests, boy scout leaders, swim coaches, etc. I can play this game all day long and not break a sweat. But here’s the real crux of the argument:

It's funny that these lawmakers didn't think this through in advance. I expect they imagine transgender people are only men in drag and girls trying to look tough -- both of whom they would like to shame and get them to "act right." They have no concept of what transgender really is.

Bravo to these McBrides for giving them a jolt of reality.

I really can't get to grips as to why transgender people shouldn't be able to use the bathroom of their choice.

Perhaps conservatives spend a lot of time in bathrooms, vetting people. Me..... do the business and I'm out.
