Manning to be released on Wednesday

Chelsea Manning is scheduled to be released from the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth on Wednesday.

Pvt. Manning will remain on unpaid active duty pending her final appellate review. As such, she will continue to receive health care and have access to commissaries and military exchanges.

Pvt. Manning is statutorily entitled to medical care while on excess leave in an active duty status, pending final appellate review.

--Dave Foster, Army spokesman

Manning had been sentenced to 35 years in prison for her part in the Wikileaks incident, but received an early release via a presidential commutation by President Obama.

Like far too many people in prison, particularly transgender women, Chelsea Manning has had to survive unthinkable violence throughout the seven years of her incarceration.

--Chris Strangio, Manning's ACLU attorney

For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea. I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world.

Celebrating a new hope, and a return of the sun.

--Manning

While in prison Manning had received hormone treatment and care for gender dysphoria. She had also been informed that she was eligible for sex reassignment surgery to be paid for by the government. However, if the appeal of her conviction is denied, she could be dishonorably discharged, which mandates a loss of benefits including health care.

It is unknown to which military facility the 29-year-old Manning will be assigned, although her mother said she will be in Maryland, where she has family.

As a former correctional specialist at the USDB, I have heretofore restrained myself from engaging in any conversations about Manning.

Here is a pretty good article about her. Some background on what she did, what she has been through, and her new plans.

I was glad to see she has family (in addition to her thousands or millions of supporters) to welcome her back to Maryland.

Her gofundme page was more than $120,000 the other day with a new goal of $150,000. She will have rent, all necessary living expenses, taken care of with this fund when she gets out.

I hope she does some writing - opinion pieces so we can hear her voice. The Intercept would be a good spot. Smile I am sure she will get a lot of job offers, but she doesn't need to worry about work immediately thanks to the fund.

She still will face some issues on base she is assigned to, but we do have her to thank that such criminal acts by some soldiers and our government got exposed to embarrass the criminals. Very brave of her to risk all she has risked.

This is the first I'm hearing of this. I don't see how her conviction could be overturned. She has admitted everything, and Obama with his commutation, said she had served enough time for her actions, not that she did not deserve to be incarcerated. Well, hoping for the best anyway!

First, commuting her sentence was the closest to a good thing Obama did without ulterior motive, perhaps in hid presidency. (of course he didn't have the courage to make it a full pardon, but that would have been too much to ask)
Second, I think that actually what Manning was persecuted for was that some of the papers she gave Wikileakes exposed the State Department (and therefore Secretary of State Clinton's) part in bribing foreign governments for the oil companies. War crimes happen, but Her reputation cannot be sullied!

On to Biden since 1973

survived this incredible and traumatic ordeal. Please take advantage of any counseling, etc. available to you from the military now and I hope your appeal goes well.

PS If Ms. Manning exposed government officials for bribery, why were they not prosecuted? Bribing foreign officials is a crime. And bribing with government money to help privately-owned oil companies has to be a crime squared.

IOKIYAP (It's o.k. if you're a plutocrat.)
