Look what the Tories are doing

After crushing the "Trotskyists" in Labour that wanted to do the inexcusable of re-nationalizing industries like the railways, the fresh, new Tory government has immediately set out to re-nationalizing industries like the railways.

The future of the privatised rail system was thrown into further doubt on Wednesday as the government announced the renationalisation of the struggling Northern rail franchise.

The decision to end Arriva’s contract was welcomed by many in the north of England, with the mayors of Manchester and Liverpool branding it a “victory for passengers” after years of widespread train cancellations and delays. The state operator of last resort will take over running of the services from 1 March.

The UK transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “This is a new beginning but it is only a beginning. Northern’s network is huge and complex and some of the things that are wrong are not going to be quick or easy to put right. But I am determined that Northern passengers see real and tangible improvements across the network as soon as possible.”

He added said that the current privatised model was not working, saying: “We know change is needed and change is coming.”

Renationalisation of the Northern rail franchise is just the beginning.
The South Western Railway (SWR) franchise faces renationalisation as well, after it was revealed that the company was going broke.
The East Coast rail service was renationalized last year.

Let's take a moment to remember how the British press treated this idea when it was proposed by Corbyn and Labour.

What can we learn from this?
That any/every idea is "bad" if it comes from the Left. Especially if it's the right thing to do.

If the government runs a natural monopoly, the people have some degree of control.
If a private company has the monopoly, Katie bar the door!

Does not apply where there is real competition. Witness Sears, Roebuck. Stupid management, then bankruptcy. No one mourns sears except the mall owners. Lots of merchants to replace them, both brick and mortar and on-line.
If PG&E or Excelon go bankrupt, the government has to bankroll them or entire states have no electricity. Natural monopoly, should be run by either state government or federal. federal is probably too remote. County is too small for rural areas.

We have argued n the past about state enterprise. I have no problem with natural monopolies. I would hate to see a government run retail monopoly or manufacturing monopoly.
