King Crimson One Time

I finally got to see King Crimson in ~June 2003 in Anaheim CA. At the time, a wife-beater-shirted Adrian Belew (I swear to God he looked like he just got out of bed) expressed a moment of acknowledgement of the world situation at the time, on stage, in between 'Larks Tongues in Aspic' or some such. Actually, they were doing modern stuff, "Industry", I think. Anyway, in his commentary about the response to the incredibly insane world situation at the time, he didn't seem to say as much as gesture how easily one could completely ignore the insanity. He dismissed it, pointing out the absurdity of thinking you could do anything about such a thing as whether (at the time) our country and its profiteers would engage in war for its own sake, its own profitability.

I kept that notion with me. Thanks, Adrien Belew. Thanks, King Crimson, for all the rest. It was a memorable evening all around haha!

You actually have the capacity to release yourself from all of this bullshit that makes you crazy, right inside of you. You can let go. And still stick around, if that's what you want to do. You don't have to let it make you crazy.

Just thowin that out there...

'Industrial'.

In the early 1990's I was in college with a guy that commuted from Lake Geneva, WI. ~ about 36 miles one way. Adrian had a house in Lake Geneva and my college bud, Jon, bumped into him several times a month in the bars. Adrian was nice but told Jon to tone down the hero worship stuff Smile

Anyhoo, Jon and the rest of Lake Geneva's night creatures respected his space but still managed to say hello. Adrian was good with that. So good that one day Jon called me and said "Get out here, now!!" Turns out Adrian arranged a session, word of mouth, first come first serve, at a small "off main street" local watering hole with a "stage" (it was about 4" higher than the rest of the floor) and held no more than 100 people. It was a thank you to the community. They announced it around 2:00pm and at about 9pm Belew took the "stage" in front of maybe 70 people and played for 90 minutes, socialized with the locals for about 30 minutes then play for another 90 minutes.

Belew played that night with a drummer and a bassist. He'd play something leading into something else, then stop and ask what everyone wanted next. The crowd, such as it was (they closed the doors before he started playing and kept 'em closed until after the session), was relaxed and very friendly. They charged a cover - $2 if I recall. Good beers were a buck. It was awesome.

@GreatLakeSailor ..haha, couldn't resist..

That is a fantastic story! Thanks man, amazing really, really cool. One of life's little gems.

I've followed the band since, well, since I first heard them, maybe 1974 or so. Always amazing, creative, boundary-breaking stuff!
