Just a word in --

While everyone here was talking about how America has gone to the dogs, there was another conversation about how America has gone to the dogs going on, on Zoom. Yesterday afternoon I was watching a conversation between, for the most part, Senate candidates:

Paula Jean Swearingen, candidate for Senate in West Virginia:

Betsy Sweet, candidate for Senate in Maine:

Larry Hamm, candidate for Senate in New Jersey:

Kimberly Graham, candidate for Senate in Iowa

And of course Albert Lee, who should still (at least until Tuesday) be running for Congress here in Oregon.

Mostly the conversation between these candidates revolved around Medicare for All and how people are going to be in really bad shape without it. So there's one way to start getting Medicare for All: flip the Senate.

It's one thing to complain, as Dan Bern did before the pandemic, that the economy is going to the dogs:

It's another to do something about it. Eh?

"The war on Gaza, backed by the West, is a demonstration that the West is willing to cross all lines. That it will discard any nuance of humanity. That it is willing to commit genocide" -- Moon of Alabama

So we elect 5 people. How many votes would that give us? 7? Flip the Senate and all we'll get is mandatory private insurance without price controls again and more Medicare cuts.

On to Biden since 1973

@Cassiodorus

We've got our Margot lawn sign now. Hope she can pull off an upset. I believe the top two will face off in November, provided there's no 50%+1 on Tuesday.

Her Facebook posts are filled with comments by winger nutjobs. As you know, the Oregonian stopped having reader comments because they were so toxic. Looks like they all moved to FB.

@Shahryar Everything is controlled discussion, and any discussion which might work out for the betterment of ordinary people is shut down by libels and by threats of violence. And certainly Margot deletes posts and reposts them to insure that crap responders are denied a hearing. I presume that's what you're talking about here. It's great that you're supporting Margot.

Anyway, in the other, gloomier diary, I made this post:

@Cassiodorus Is there anyone in the Senate besides Sanders who actually supports Medicare for All? Even if every Senate race up this year were won by a MfA proponent, it still wouldn't be enough. Brand New Congress has a good idea.

@tle There are also the state initiatives, which attempt state versions of Medicare for All. The one here in Oregon, I am told, is getting close.

They are all different in many ways but they all share a common decency. It gives me hope in these difficult times that there are people like them who want to serve.
