Illinois leg working for transgender people

Unlike some states we could name, lawmakers in Illinois are actually doing good for their transgender citizens.

Yesterday the Illinois House passed HB1785 by a margin of 63-43. The bill would allow transgender citizens to change their gender designation with authorization from a medical professional confirming they have undergone medically appropriate treatment. Current law requires proof of a surgical operation.

The bill was sponsored by Rep Greg Harris (D-Chicago), who says that the bill would align state law with medical standards at the federal level.

At least a dozen other states no longer require surgery. Advocates say these updated standards help protect from discrimination transgender people who do not want or cannot afford surgery.

The bill will be shepherded in the Senate by Sen, Toi Hutchinson.
