Historic Columbia Gorge burns

The Eagle Creek fire has jumped the Columbia River and is racing westward in two states.
Pristine wilderness gone.
Some of the finest hiking trails in the western U.S. denuded of all life.
Multnomah falls crystal clear waters turned brown and grey. Although the historic lodge there was saved from the flames, an expected wind change tonite could do a "Harvey" on it, return again and finish its destruction of the premier tourist attraction and jewel of the Pacific Northwest.
Interstate 84 is shut down from Troutdale to Hood River, an over 50 mile stretch. State 14 on the Washington side is restricted to car traffic only and no stopping anywhere along the road. A level three evacuation is in effect for Pringle and the area around Archer Mountain, including Smith-Cripe Rd. and Franz Lake.
Level one evacuation was called for East Troutdale beyond 257 St.
While the Bridge of the Gods is still open, most residents have fled to Stevenson and points beyond.
The wind change and speed forecast later tonight could drive the fire east toward the Beacon Rock Recreation area and imperil the Gifford Pinchot National Forrest.
The Bonneville Dam could be impacted from both sides of the river.
There is 0 containment in either state.
Heavy smoke and ash is fouling the air and leaving a thick layer on the entire Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area.
Bad air quality and high temperatures are closing schools or triggering early release of students in multiple school districts.
Updates to follow.

By the time the Waldo Canyon scar is reforested, even with maximum human intervention, I will be an estimated century dead. Upper Fountain Creek now flows brown and grey -- and frequently jumps its banks upstream of Manitou Springs, which it almost never did before the fire.

I hear you. And my thoughts and prayers are with the Columbia Gorge and those living in that environment today.

It's grown even darker. And it's 92 degrees. Dry as a bone. My humidity gauge says 28%

@earthling1 That's what it looked like in Kitsap yesterday and today is even worse. We're a peninsula in the Puget Sound and not threatened by these fires. But there's 0mph wind and ashes falling on us. I could stare directly at the sun and it was dim. The night before, the full moon was red. With all the windows closed, my home smells like an ashtray.

This is a form of violence. Doing nothing about it is also a form of violence.

Believe me, you only want a small portion of the water from Harvey.

I drove through some of the affected areas near my home in northern Harris County (Houston) for the first time today. It was sickening to say the least.

Monday night, the fire doubled in size, to 10,000 acres. Out of control and zero containment. The fire started about 40 miles upriver from Portland, at Cascade Locks on the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Strong east winds (par for the course in the Gorge) drove it rapidly to the west. The entire Oregon side of the Gorge from Cascade Locks west is burning. Some of the eastern suburbs of Portland are under alert for possible evacuation.

Unfortunately, late Monday night, the fire jumped the river in the far western Gorge, not far from where I used to live in Skamania County, WA. Tonight, the wind direction is predicted to shift, at which point west winds will drive the fires east.

Afraid to speculate what this could mean for the WA side of the river.

Edited for correction: 10,000 acres, not miles.

agencies budgets. Land management agencies like the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Mgmt (BLM) and NPS (National Park Service) are the front liners for fire suppression.
I'm here in Vancouver. This does remind a bit of the Mt. St. Helens eruption, I was in Olympia that day and the sky was darker and much more ash fell. But this is pretty messy. I went out and tried to blow some of the ash off my driveway and car and it just floats around and settles back in. Nothing to do until some rain comes. Not predicted til next week and even then not much. Some thunderstorms which will only add to the fire danger.

The fires and smoke don't recognize borders. Here on Vancouver Island we have not had any forest fires but we are choking. Here's a map of the smoke for the Pacific Northwest:

@MarilynW British Columbia has been burning since the middle of the summer. We've gotten quite a bit of smoke from BC fires, as well as from the Oregon fires, and now the Gorge.

Everyday the smoke is different. Some days it makes your eyes burn. Other days you're sneezing and coughing. One day last week, it made me feel sick to my stomach. Wildfire smoke has all sorts of stuff in it, anything and everything that gets consumed by the fire. Trees of all kinds, animals, poison ivy, marijuana plants, buildings, old tires people dumped in the woods, etc.
