Ex-Mayor of Haverhill Wants Them to
Fight to Save Moyer and Haywood.

A appeal was made at yesterday's meeting of the Central Federated Union By John C. Chase, Former Socialist Mayor of Haverhill, Mass., for co-operation with the Socialists in protesting against the punishment of President Moyer, Secretary Haywood, and other officers of the Western Federation of Miners, who were arrested in connection with a number of murders, including the assassination of ex-Gov. Steunenberg of Idaho. These men are now in jail in Boise City. Capitalists and corporations were denounced impartially by Chase. He said that the unions at a meeting last Thursday decided on a perpetual agitation on behalf of the imprisoned men and asked to attend the first conference to push along the agitation which will begin in the Grand Central Palace to-morrow. Referring to Moyer and Haywood, he said:

If these two men are hanged, and if any man in this body, or any other body of the kind, is not then willing to shoulder a gun and fight for his class, he is a coward.

Shouts of applause arose from the Socialists and the request was granted. It was harder to get delegates to attend the conference. After several of them had declined, Delegate Abrahams of the Franklin Association of Pressmen's Helpers and delegate Modest of Cigarmakers' Union No. 90, both Socialists, said they would go.

this nowadays. Willing to bet it would consist of small page 6 under the fold stories.

"Illegal Miners Meeting Broken Up."
"Socialist Terrorists Threaten Violence"

Sigh. Sorry, love your work, and so happy to see it. Normally American History bores the crap out of me, when there's so many other fascinating eras, but I'm slowly coming around here.

they kidnapped Moyer and Haywood. There were many calls to arms just like this one and not all from Socialists either.

The United Mine Workers stood right up and donated $5000 dollars, from one of its districts, with just a few days, before there was even a defense fund set up. And, at that time the UMWA and Western Federation of Miners were rival unions. $5000 was an enormous amount of money in those days.

There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties.. This...is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.--John Adams
