Good Morning, America, here is my little love letter from Germany

Hamburg bars offer 'Mexican' drink to protest Trump G20 attendance

Over 20 bars in Hamburg have banded together to protest against US President Donald Trump‘s visit to the northern German city for the Group of 20 (G20) summit in July.

The bars are offering their patrons so-called Mexikaner drinks - a Mexico-inspired shot that mixes a clear spirit such as tequila with tomato juice, tobasco, salt and pepper - the proceeds of which will go towards protest activities against the summit.

The initiative - dubbed Soli-Mexikaner gegen Trump, or Mexikaner in solidarity against Trump - came into being in a bar in the Hamburg district of St Pauli, according to co-founder Bjoern Rosteck.

Rosteck said that bars in Berlin, Leipzig, Vienna and Copenhagen were also taking part in the initiative.

May be I should get drunk in St. Pauli in solidarity for my Mexican brothers and sisters? I never drink and never went to a bar in St. Pauli, but I guess for everything there is a first time and Trump makes it happen.

You should spread that idea and join us.

Na dann, Prost! Smile

I suspect T-rump is easier to take when inebriated. Today is a women's work stoppage...a day without women. No big deal for me to stay home (which I will do today) in solidarity.

Sounds like the anti-turkey movement is happening in Germany with the capture of the journalist and suppressed rallies. Are you seeing anything where you are?

Here's hoping all is well with you across the pond!

@Lookout
between Turkey (Erdogan) and Germany, I don't think that involves the turkish citizens who live in Germany (who are also quite often German citiziens) and the German citizens per se, the tensions are with Turkey and Erdogan, not with Turkish residents (expats) in Germany, I think.

Germany has 1.4 million Turkish residents that can vote to approve or reject the Turkish constitutional amendments that would transform Turkey's parliamentary system into a presidential one. The vote will take place April 16th. Therefore members of the Turkish government want to hold rallies in Germany.

Erdogan has campaigned in 2011 and in 2014 in Germany before. Some Mayjors in some German cities had cancelled those rallies citing security concerns. Merkel has said that there is NO general rally ban for members of the Turkish government in Germany. Erdogan wants to come himself in the near future.

You can read all about it here and a google search will give you a lot of articles talking about it.

TV news talk about it all over, but I personally haven't seen any rallies or demonstrations myself.

After the recent escalations of Erdogan accusing the Germans political activities as "Nazi Practices" the general mood among the German politicians (and probably the whole population as well) is in full defense and rejection mode.

was the first imported beer on my radar as a teenage Long Island boy, with only limited knowledge consisting mainly of whatever was being advertised on Mets and Yankees games.

My father got me a dishwashing job at 14 or 15, and one of the things I had to do was stock beer in the cooler, and St. Pauli Girl was the exotic import that took precedence. I remember being mesmerized by the blue-eyed, blond haired maiden on the label merrily handling multiple overflowing steins of brew. Advertising, it's powerful and toxic (we Leftists/Progressives, whatever we are, need to do some of our own).

Greetings mimi, and thanks for the love letter. The idea of being in a great big beer hall in Germany, in solidarity with Mexicans and immigrants, sounds good to me.

Every country that brews lager-style beer learned it from German immigrants. That includes Mexico. The favorite in northern Mexico is Tecate, named for the border town where it is brewed.

@Azazello it's German, English, American or Irish, my particular favorites have to be Staropramen and Pilsner Urquell from CZ.

Maybe it's after traveling there and drinking it in pubs and at the kitchen tables of friends' homes with dinner. Or maybe it's living years ago just a few blocks away from one of the last Czech beer gardens in NYC and that association for me. But man, for me, there's nothing like a big fresh .5 ltr stein of those two beers.

Having said that, I now reserve that treat for special occasions only. I'm more of an austerity-minded, frugal shopper these days, just because it's good training and matches my philosophy. I have no problem, whatsoever, drinking cheap, small brewery American-made beer - and I don't mean trendy craft or corporate monolith beers. I mean a 30-pack case of canned, upstate NY-brewed Genesee beer.

Friends don't let friends drink yellow beer. I swore off lagers years ago. I'm totally down with craft beers now, mostly IPAs. Ale was invented in the UK; different yeasts, different process. Ale is brewed at room temp, not "lagered" in a cold room like yellow beer.
This was recorded in Munich; my favorite band, favorite song. Check out the German hipsters in the audience. They're not quite sure what to make of these cholo dudes from East L.A.

quite know what to think of this band, though from the three pieces you posted, this is the only I understand and like (somewhat) :-).
For sure in order to learn something about beer one has to ask around some Americans. They know all about it. ...and it amuses me and I like that.

Salud.

I have a saying: Friends don't let friends drink yellow beer. I swore off lagers years ago.

The only "lager" I drink is Boston, which isn't a yellow lager beer at all. It's essentially ale. I think Samuel Adams Brewing calls it a lager to get yellow beer drinkers to try a real beer. A "gateway drug", if you will. Start with Boston Lager, you'll be merrily chugging Guinness Extra Stout in no time flat!

And the jokes I've learned about Coors Banquet would fill a volume the size of Tolstoy's War and Peace! "Coors Banquet: Made with real Rocky Mountain water! And real Rocky Mountain deer piss, too!"

Guinness is good for you!

I think I read that in Wodehouse; shows how good some advertising is, and how scary.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

I have never fathomed Tecate's attraction, except that it is really cheap. The first time I ever saw that wedge-of-limon-in-the-brewski act was with a can of Tecate & I figured that it was to try to cover up the horrible taste.

Now, Negra Modelo & Bohemia Dark, those are kick-ass beers, ruined by the ever popular limon wedge fad.

if you want to include mead or African honey-beer or Apache teswin. I'm pretty sure the cold-lagering process is of German origin but I could be wrong. Bohemia is my fave among the Mexican brews.

German beer and for sure not St. Pauli Girl beer (which I became aware of only in the US), I am having my little love affair with the dutch. I drink Heineken, and that's it, and I only drink it when it's hot and humid outside, which conveniently it was often in Washington DC. But in fact I am super frugal and most of the time I drink Seltzer water. With that I can't even say "Cheers". Sad

So if one orders this drink made with vodka, does that make it a Maria Sangrienta?
