Go Michigan!

Whomever you support in the primary, it’s difficult to deny that there is a correlation between turnout and results thus far. Where turnout has been better than 2008, Sanders wins. Where turnout has dropped less than 20%, Sanders usually wins. When turnout has dropped more than 20% Clinton always wins. This table shows the relationship between turnout and results thus far:

Turnout Change Prediction
>0% Bernie wins with 18%+
-10 to -20% Bernie wins with 10%+ except in Mass
-20+% Hillary wins (broad range of margins)

Note that both primaries and caucuses seem to hold true to this trend so far (with caucuses showing the highest relative turnouts). With that in mind, we move on to Michigan. The trick with Michigan though is that it’s demographically different than all of the states we’ve seen this far. It’s a mid-west post-industrial state with large rural areas contrasted with affluent areas and the big city in Detroit. We don’t really have a comparative framework to date so I am relying somewhat on the polls and the Massachusetts results for this projection.

Turnout Change Prediction
>0% Bernie wins close election
-0 to -10% Hillary wins close election
-10 to -20% Hillary wins by +10-15%
-20+% Hillary landslide of 25%+

But here is the gravy. so far turnout has directly predicted results everywhere except Massachusetts. However, if you weight the polls with turnout (which is how the polls are created in the first place so tricky) you can see that the polls had Massachusetts for Hillary the week before the election by a smaller margin than they do in Michigan, so it’s fair to assume that Bernie needs a very high turnout to win. Michigan also is quite new demographically so it’ll be interesting to see what patterns hold from other regions.

With that all done, we should be able to predict results based on turnout. So here is a county-by-county table of 2008 turnout for Michigan. If you support Hillary and turnout today isn’t meeting these levels, that is likely good for your candidate. If you are a Bernie supporter and turnout today is matching or exceeding these levels, this is likely very good for Bernie. So here is a tool for monitoring results.

I actually have this set up in a google doc which can be used to keep a live tally of turnout throughout the state but I have a soccer game to attend. If I find someone to manage it though I can leave it in good hands. Any volunteers?

Michigan SOS: Primary Voter Registration/Turnout Statistics

Polling typically screens out people who haven't previously voted. If Bernie can get a lot of new people to turn out and vote, prepare for a yuuuuuuuge upset. Let's hope that hope for the future wins out over despair and apathy...

I want my two dollars!

Check out the #MichiganPrimary twitter feed. Reports of really high turnout in Ann Arbor which is good.
Thanks for the stats. I was looking at those last night actually and it's not by party which is annoying. I had to re-produce from NY Times/CNN archives.

someone might want to read his latest threat: "March 15 applies to everyone and I mean everyone"
Sounds like he's getting hotter under the collar by that title.
If anyone dares read it - give us a summary! ;o)

It's actually better than his last post. Softens the stance on Bernie supporters a bit and specifically took Trix to task as a symbol of what will get Clinton supporters banned. Actually harsher on Clinton supporters than Berners. But still pushing the March 15th date - but does call it a soft date. It's a much better post though I think there are still some quibbles.

From that very second! Except...the front pager is still there, still full of mojo, still able to hang with everyone else who said what he said because we made them do it. So...good luck with that.

I suspect Kos saw the fall in numbers, sent henchmen here and there, and saw a growing interest, and saw that he needed to act.
If there was a significant movement here, I expected nothing less.

Trix' long ears were simply nipped as an example. I am sure she received a nice personal note saying not to worry and to just tone it down for a couple of weeks.

The Trix profile still has 5 bars so I assume she can still post to the site.

I still don't feel welcome there anymore. However, I will still do a daily rah rah comment in the BNR cuz I luv my peeps there. I'm also reccing and tipping Bernie diaries and throwing out the random comment.
It's just so pleasant here! :o)

Yeah stay in a realm where you don't have to be abused. Nothing wrong with that. I also need to spend less time there and am focusing on doing that. It's too negative and abusive. But helping to rec up what needs recced up is good.

Don't see all the damn ads (even without login) and not sure if that counts as page hits. Phone crashes when I try to open comments if there are more than about 200, but in that case I probably don't want to read the comments anyway.

I still drop by to read BNR (and make donations through LP's tip jar). I scan for Bernie diaries to rec, then leave. Today I got mad and banged out a few comments. Not flattering to HRC but I guess not flag worthy. The level of concerted attack and what seems like scripted nastiness aren't exactly a welcome mat for those who don't toe the Hillary line. Especially for those who won't toe it under any circumstances. We can build community anywhere. Hugs and kisses to Mahakali Overdrive for getting this refuge up and running so quickly, and to whoever created caucus99percent.

I don't believe for a second he'll actually tamp down the pro-Clinton gang. He would have to ban/time-out a huge number of Clinton supporters, including at least a few front-pagers. That just isn't happening.

It's more likely he's throwing a few to the curb in hopes to give the appearance of neutrality in hopes of keeping traffic from Sanders supporters.

Though I then wavered into the comments and Markos still doesn't understand the e-mail issue at a minimum. So there is no question that the threshold for what is appropriate will be largely arbitrary.

on that issue until the full investigation plays out -- I've got plenty of other things that concern me about Hillary Clinton and her candidacy (Mass Southpaw had an awesome diary showing how standards on pay for play applied to Calgary Cruz don't seem to apply to Hillary Clinton).

I keep thinking back to 2008 -- I was an early supporter of John Edwards and his "Two Americas" stance. Where would we have been if he'd gotten more traction, got the nomination then the extramarital hanky-panky came out? I'm not wishing ill on anyone, but there's a long stretch between now and June, and even between now and the Philly convention. Anything can happen in that time and it's best to be ready.

Yeah we dodged a slingshot there with Edwards.

I hear you re: the e-mails. It's an issue that is particularly important to me due to my work with NGOs using FOIA. Setting up a private e-mail server was something Rove did and it's a bit shocking to me that Hillary would then think, "Oh, you know, that controversial thing Rove did is a good idea." I just can't grasp it. Anyhow, i'm just rambling because it's a big deal to me.

he didn't set up his 'own' personal server like FSC did. And Colin Powell also didn't set up his 'own' personal server--he used his personal Gmail account, but only for Administrative/housekeeping matters. Not to handle diplomatic matters.

(And Jeb used a private server, but it was installed in a state-owned office building--not in his own basement or bathroom, LOL!)

Wink

At the least, it reinforces FSC's penchant for secrecy.

When I find some extra time to search to it, I'll post my blurb about the handling of classified material, including its transport from the Pentagon. I can vouch that DOD takes this issue very seriously. Can't imagine that the State Department doesn't.

I could be wrong, but I can't imagine that it won't hurt her (to some extent) in a General Election, with almost everyone but the Dem Party Base.

Because of the handling of Petraeus' case, I can't imagine that she'll be hit with any penalty, regardless of what the investigation uncovers.

Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.

This one is targeted to Hillary people, and he softened his tone to the Bernie people. He isn't relenting that we will support the "winner" as declared on March 15, but he is making sure the Hillary people back off. Someone asked why the hell he didn't go after Trix sooner. No response. He also said after the new President is elected, everyone can go back to calling the winner a horse's ass even if it is Hillary. In other words, unity will cease and once again we can go back to throwing liberals to the lions.

I am not going to participate there for awhile. I don't trust any of it, and it just doesn't sound like a nice place to be. Kos says they will be "monitoring". How? Flags? Are they going to turn off the automated warnings? I think they'll make a token splash here and a token splash there, and it will be business as usual. I think he was surprised by how many people left.

Speaking of Michigan.... I am not optimistic. I hope I am proved wrong.

I do not pretend I know what I do not know.

I'm not either just because the polls are much worse than where we need them to be. But turnout will fix that. They are making assumptions in their polls that so far this cycle have been wrong to some degree in every state. I think that will be true in Michigan too so probably closer than the polling median, but not a win. But turnout can undo that and give Bernie the win.

I will be there also until banned. Kos made a point to try to be evenhanded and objective by calling out a pro Hillary troll. I am guilty of intemperate remarks but am working hard to be ever more impeccable with my words. Especially with Michigan going the way it is I find the Ides of March deadline not arbitrary but deliberate scale tipping for Sec. Clinton. There is no denying the growing groundswell for Bernie. Hillary's trustworthy rating just plain sucks. And for so many very good reasons. This is a very exciting election. A progressive would strap in, say a prayer or not and enjoy the ride. But I digress. The deadline stands. We are all to be good and respectful. Pro Bernie is okay but watch out for right wing sourcing accusations. Carefully couch criticism against HRC. Berlin's gonna lose. Fold in or be banned. Maybe. Oh yeah! Plenty of precedent for this behavior. Move along, nothing to see here.
Go Bernie! The rust belt hears you, the young hear you, the rural areas hear you. We all hear you! Even the stone deaf who STILL try to ignore you hear you.

Thanks for putting this together. Don't forget though that in 2008 Hillary was the only one on the ballot, so the 2008 numbers may not mean as much. Obama and Edwards were not because Michigan broke the rules by moving up in the calendar. Therefore Obama/Edwards followed the DNC rules, Hillary did not. Michigan's delegates were not supposed to count. However Hillary protested and got 1/2 delegate allotment and then got the full allotment at the convention but by that point it was too late.

Yes Excellent points. This is why I informally took a look back deeper in history and also why I required that turnout HAD to go up for Bernie to win. 2008 was still a high turnout year in Michigan but I suspected it wasn't at peak.

of course.

So I was looking at the CBS politics page that has the delegate count and yes, they're counting the superdelegates so they show Hillary waaay out ahead. That's really messed up. It's like private school boys playing public school boys in soccer using private school referees who announce that the score is 3-0 in favor of the private school before the game starts. Those media outlets are pretty blatant when they report like that.
