A Gentle Reminder

From the FAQ: About Essay Content and Sourcing

C99 is a non-partisan site. That means that the site itself takes no official stance on any political party or candidate. Users are free to support any candidate or party across the political spectrum, from left to right. You are liable to see essays and comments here that also span that political arc. We are an open discussion board that takes pride in tolerance and a lack of censorship unless it is beyond the pale of civility. Beyond the pale of civility is a blanket term but I think we all would agree that there are some things that should be out of bounds and we would all recognize them as such if they were to pop up.

It's easy for a toe to cross the line when tap dancing close to it.

that more and more reminders are going to pop up as we move we’ll into silly season. It is imperative to keep one’s head cool. I am as capable of incivility as the next person.

What more can be said? Engaging in uncivil behavior is a choice. As a person who loves this blog, I will do my part to choose civility. Let’s all choose wisely.

"The “jumpers” reminded us that one day we will all face only one choice and that is how we will die, not how we will live." Chris Hedges on 9/11

@Raggedy Ann
that's being used to divide us. It appears to be working too well. It is an appeal to the most basic of human emotions, fear.

I saw a couple of insults handed out in the last couple days that were cutely formulated so as to be grammatically, legalistically subjunctive and hypothetical, but were really pretty blatant.

As someone who was recently called a coward for not having belief in the electoral process, I'd have to agree.

As is calling for entire chunks of the US to be given to Mexico by a moderator, and then making a personal attack but sugar-coating it, by calling the object of her attack a "sweetheart". Regionalism is completely acceptable. "Dumb shit kickers" unite! But don't be offended by or question it, otherwise you'll be the one selectively moderated.

Nary a moderator popped into to that comment thread to remind him he was crossing the line of civility, but my "pushing" this thread is worthy of a reminder? Hmmmm....
