Friday Open Thread ~ "What are you watching and who are you listening to?" edition ~ An evening with Shane Claiborne

I choose to call myself PhillyBluesFan out of a great appreciation for that earthy American musical tradition and because my wife and because I spent 15 good years living just on the edge of metropolitan Philadelphia. You could reach our former home by taking the second exit off I95 just across the Delaware state line. It is interesting that we were sandwiched between Chester, Pa on one side and Swarthmore, Pa on the other.

Among my fondest memories of that experience would have to be the evenings I spent teaching decision making to one inmate at a time inside a prison in Chester and the days I spent helping put together a small independent magazine that was published on a shoestring in what used to be a North Philly rowhouse ... the original location of THE SIMPLE WAY.

One of the other unique to Philadelphia paces I used to frequent was the Quaker retreat center at Pendle Hill. I'd sit in their quiet library, listening to a podcast on my smartphone or reading books from the stacks.

After this bit of personal introduction, I invite you to listen in on a recorded Zoom conversation with Shane Claiborne. He lives in the neighborhood where we assembled CONSPIRE

An evening with Shane Claiborne

[archived Pendle Hill video chat]

Our faith is not just a way of believing. It is a way of living in the world. Christians are meant to be non-conformists, interrupting the patterns of our world with prophetic imagination. We should be a holy counterculture. Shane will share stories of contemporary communities who are living with beautiful creativity and sometimes getting in a little trouble for it. After all, the Kingdom of God is not just something we hope for when we die, but something that we are to bring on earth as it is in heaven.

I was once close to some roughly similar-minded rural folks in Georgia and then later North Carolina, but lacking the spiritual teaching-and-learning element provided by a figure like Stephen Gaskin, individual interests exerted too much of a centrifugal force and the sense of community didn’t last. Broke my heart to see it, too. But whatcha gonna do?

https://www.koinoniafarm.org/
It is a christian commune started back in the 40's

Koinonians shared not only faith and resources, but also work. We farmed the land for our livelihood, and sought ways to work in partnership with the land, “to conserve the soil, God’s holy earth” (Clarence Jordan). We preached, taught, and were members of local churches. From the beginning, Koinonians emphasized the brotherhood and sisterhood of all people. When we could afford to hire seasonal help, Black and White workers were paid a fair, equal wage. When the community and its guests and workers prayed or ate a meal, we all sat together at the table, regardless of color. Our commitment to racial equality, pacifism, and economic sharing brought bullets, bomb and a boycott in the 1950s as the KKK and others attempted to force us out. We responded with prayer, nonviolent resistance, and a renewed commitment to live the Gospel. We created a mail-order business, which continues to sustain our community today.

The concept that grew into Habitat for Humanity was born in the USA at Koinonia Farm, a small, interracial, Christian farming community. Koinonia Farm was founded in 1942 outside of Americus, Georgia, by farmer and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan and others to promote racial reconciliation.

I am also listening to horror stories about the Moderna vaccination. Our district attorney and his receptionist were the first ones in that office to get the shot. Both of them had to leave work as they were too ill to function. The receptionist said within an hour, she could not walk.
Good times!

@on the cusp the district attorney and his receptionist are tallied in some way and more to the point, published as an adverse event we can all understand? Hmmmm?

Does this make you want to wait? I sure do. So many people have some part of one or two of their systems that is not bang on the numbers, that puts them at risk they may not even know they have.

The biggest question is which is worse, getting the virus or getting vaccinated without knowing everything that is in the syrup they mix together. Until all is published it is a crap shoot.

Take care, stay safe.

@Dawn's Meta @Dawn's Meta When I called, the DA had already gone home. The receptionist spoke with me briefly as she was leaving. She was just about in tears. She said for the first hour, she was fine, then just dropped. She was dizzy, nauseated, and unable to walk. Now, she is terrified of taking the second shot.
The DA is 67, has had COVID, a mild case. The receptionist is in her early 60's. She is overweight, took it because her husband is immune system compromised. She was trying to protect him.
My office faces a residence where grandparents, kids, and grand kids all have COVID. The rear of my office faces a commercial building owned and managed by that same family. I mentioned the other day that "everyone around me" is infected, and that is both true and horrifying.
I do not believe any of the 3 brands used as trial groups anyone with allergies. Both the DA and receptionist have chronic allergies from pollen.
I have seasonal pollen allergies and an allergic reaction to iodine. I am very hesitant to try the shots. We are anywhere from 25 minutes to 45 minutes from a hospital.
As I age, medicines I have never taken before tend to cause some weird rash. I broke out in a total body rash a few days after taking a multivitamin, as did my fiance'. As soon as we tossed the vitamins, we began to mend.
I just may not be able to join the herd.

@on the cusp pens. I have found the same thing: the older we get the more things our immune systems just don't do well with. We have EPI pens. I had a reaction years ago, which caused me to jab twice. Nasty, unpleasant, scary reaction.

My big issue is knowing what besides the main ingredient is in a pill, shot, vitamin drink, you name it. They are called excipients or other ingredients. Most vitamins, supplements, medical pills, shots, even IV Saline have things people can be allergic to.

The key is finding out what else is in anything we ingest, breathe, take in any form. Lots of capsule delivered supplements for example use lactose. I have a mild milk allergy. Repeated use increases my sensitivity. If I find out Lactose is in a medicine or capsule, I don't buy or take it.

I don't see a great deal of information on the bonus ingredients in any of the vaccines. We have a right to know for our safety. Also, if something happens, emergency people will know what to do. And if it's not the primary ingredient, then the blame can't be put on the treating substance.

Good luck to everyone.

@Dawn's Meta being at good levels in various vitamins, due to good diet and sun, can result in an overdose of those vitamins.
You reminded me...I, too, am mildly lactose intolerant.
I just have a mental block about purchasing an EPI pen, which I have never needed, to feel safer taking a shot to enhance my safety from the virus. That is just such contorted damn reasoning to me. And yet, that is the only way I could even consider taking that jab. Moreover, I am not 100% sure my dr. would recommend the shot anyway.

@Dawn's Meta Because the statute of limitations on pediatric cases does not lapse until age 21, manufacturers have been at the mercy of relentless assaults against their products. response to the vaccine. The symptoms sound like evidence of a very strong immune response to the vaccine.

The secretary may have been exposed earlier by her boss without realizing it. If you are sure that you have not had Covid then this may not be a problem for you. Your allergies sound like they should be discussed with your Dr. and maybe you should get any vaccines somewhere where they are set up to deal with allergic reactions.

I know someone who got the Moderna last week without any problems. I would personally prefer the Moderna or Pfizer, but will take whichever one I can get first if the J&J or Oxford vaccines are approved.

I had the Moderna. No problem. My friend Mary had it, no problem. Between us we have many (different) issues and neither of us have had regular flu shots for years. Both 75. Both got the regular flu shot this year bc of covid. I did do research. The cases where there are problems are very rare. So there’s that.

SoCal because of a cluster of bad reactions (from a paticular vaccination venue), and a few other cases that have been mentioned, but a ton of folks have had it, including some we know personally, with no effect beyond the normal injection site soreness that one gets from just about any injectiion, lots of elderly too in that unscientific sample. We are on a wait list, and trying to find excess doese prior to that, because we're planning a vacay and have to get that 28 day booster in as well. I'm a real wreck in many respects, many chronic allergies, mild asthma (was severe but it beat it out of myself with strenuous exercise), hepatitis in the seventies, ulcerative colitis and more, so we'll see how I fare - I figure if it doesn't hassle me, it should be pretty benign.

and decided to check on the idea before posting it and it turns out that they are a carrier for something - quickly does quickie search - ok
--- https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/wildlifedamage/operational-act.... ---

Nutria are vectors for wildlife diseases including tuberculosis and septicemia, which are transmissible to people, pets, and livestock. Nutria feces and urine can contain parasites such as nematodes, blood flukes, tapeworms, and liver flukes that may contaminate drinking water supplies and swimming areas used by people.

Nutria can be infected with several pathogens and parasites that can be transmitted to humans, livestock, and pets. The role of nutria, however, in the spread of diseases such as equine encephalomyelitis, leptospirosis, hemorrhagic septicemia (Pasteurellosis), paratyphoid, and salmonellosis is not well documented. They may also host a number of parasites, including the nematodes and blood flukes that cause “swimmer’s-itch” or “nutria-itch” (Strongyloides myopotami and Schistosoma mansoni), the protozoan responsible for giardiasis (Giardia lamblia), tapeworms (Taenia spp.), and common liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica).

Don't know how cooking them counters all of that nor of any risks inherent in butchering them

They may also host a number of parasites, including the nematodes and blood flukes that cause “swimmer’s-itch” or “nutria-itch” (Strongyloides myopotami and Schistosoma mansoni)...

Strongyloides is probably what should be referred to as "nutria-itch". Swimmer's itch is caused by Schistosomatid of ducks or beavers/nutria--basically, the infectious larvae penetrates the skin, realizes it is not in a duck and dies-causing a local inflammatory response.
Schistosoma mansoni is the human infectious one. Usually found in African waters (and in a lab where I worked ~30years ago)...The way the life-cycle works, it is probably difficult to get these parasites from eating the host's meat, but swimming in water with infected hosts and snails is a problem..
Fun-fact for the day.
