Just about the only insects I'm comfortable with are bumble bees or butterflies.

How frightening! The snow that is. That's scarier than ghosts or goblins.

But that was four hours ago when I was younger and full of hope.

The snow gives the skeletons and spiders much more form, making them look more alive.

Hi all, Hey SP! Hope all are well!

GREAT 'bug' photos SP! I love the Fig Scarab. There are several very similar in that group with varying degrees of the buffy peach color along sides. That metallic green is awesome. The one I see here I think is maybe a "Peach" Scarab. They all eat fruit.

My family had the proverbial inordinate fondness for beetles, we went nuts the first time we saw one of those. Three of us chasing after it with nets... our monthly or more camping trips fairly resembled Monty Python skits, often with live snakes. I still go off when I see Cerambycid, Buprestid, or Cicindellid beetles. But Scarabs are pretty nice too.

I think the mantis is the introduced (as garden predator) non-native Asian type. Which seems about the most common in many areas now. AWESOME photos man!!

Thanks for the great pics!

The figeaters have been scarce the last few years. This is the first time I've seen more than one in the same day in a long while.
I don't know about you, but to me the mantis looks like it may have eggs to lay.

I can totally picture you as a child chasing insects with a net ; ). Classic!

Here are a couple great interesting photos. I did not take these pics. A nice local lady sent them and said I could use them. I appears to be a pair of copulating Red Bat. Was on her porch a week or so ago. My wife said I need to label these NSFW.

Red Bats

probably not fighting

I explained to the nice lady that sent them, that as in people, it can be difficult to determine if it is fighting or something else... Wink

Hope all are well! Having fun is the best revenge!

Maybe they're just snuggling to stay warm. Just spitballing here.

they are cuddling then fighting to me, but I know what you mean about sometimes not knowing which it is.

Thanks for the photos, they are interesting to see.

This was the first time I've seen a Mantis somewhere other than my backyard, and I don't see them there very often.

You may not have changing colours in leaves, but you sure find enough colour in small packages! The Praying Mantis is clearly giving thanks for whatever treats it's finding. And what a face! How do you make them look at you like that ; ).

A couple photos of a walk on the beach on a very windy day.

Farewell fair Tui ...

Have a good weekend all.

@janis b great pics Janis! Is it a piece of an alga? Awesome color contrast with that magenta on the sand. Beautiful! I used to shoot a lot of dead bird pics. Still would if to document a rare one, or to get a feather or tract thereof I don't have in collection. Neat pic. We all meet our end one day.

As amazingly strong flyers they are, I assume, but don't know, that the Tui was wind blown against the cliff. The winds were especially fierce that day.

It tasted of salt and seaweed. I should really learn how to collect and dry it as a spice to enhance the flavour of food.

I've found if you pay the hired help above union scale they're happy to look wherever you want. Actually the Mantis followed my movements all on it's own. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
Love the contrasting colors in your first photo. The flowers really stand out.
