Friday Night Photos Maritime Edition
Happy Friday the 13th everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
I had family in town visiting this week. On Tuesday we went to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. It was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the low 70s. The last time I was at the museum was four years ago. Since that time the boats are looking a little worse for wear and the Russian submarine they used to have is no longer there. I don't know if that has anything to do with the war in Ukraine or not. I also noticed the HMS Surprise is now tied up on its starboard side. Last time I was there it was tied up on the port side. All in all it was a fun day and week.

The first five shots are the Star of India, the second five are HMS Surprise, the ship used for the movie Master and Commander.

wast the Star of India down there, visited a number of times as a kid. Gives you a fuller understanding of the term "learning the ropes".

interesting story about the Surprise. Just finished reading an account of the vessel,
then named Rose, which was a fixture on the Newport (RI) waterfront forever.
Tells the story of how the crew brought her down and around thru the Panama Canal
to have a refit done in San Diego to be in that movie. Exciting tales of dismasting in
Atlantic storms, busted bowsprit, dying engines and whatnot. Mostly about the
bravery of the crew to accomplish the delivery on a derelict dreadnaught.
The novel is All Hands on Deck by Will Sofrin.

Thanks for the info. I knew Surprise started out as Rose, but I didn't know the refit was done here in San Diego, or about it's journey getting here.

I don't think there will be many out sailing today with the blasting winds we're having. Every leaf is in constant motion, branches squeaking, even the stovepipe is making sounds.

For nine months now the weather had been largely unsettling, with destructive rain and winds. The calm days are few, but I'm doing my best to stay stable and appreciative of all that is affirmative.

Great photos SP! Great ships! Now there's some lines! How long does it take to learn them? A 30' monohaul had more than enough to confuse me.
I don't have any boat pics handy really... but you won't believe this, there are some marine maritime birds handy. More degenerated pics of slides.
Fulmar - dark morph, Pacific only, Atlantic birds are all pale morph (looks like a gull). Note tubes on bill, through which it expells salt after desalinating it for drinking. Many seabirds have this ability.
Sooty Shearwater - probably nesting in New Zealand, we see them on their circuit around the oceans as they pass by California. Other than nesting, they live at sea.
Sabine's Gulls - other than when nesting in the arctic tundra, they are pelagic, spending 9 months of the year far at sea away from land.
Black-footed Albatross - probably nesting on Midway Is., we see them off California over deeper water.

The marine birds fit right in. I didn't know some of them spent so much time at sea or that they could desalinate seawater. Thanks for the info. I'm always learning something new from you.

The ship pics remind me of the Gasparilla Festival held in Tampa (Bay) annually, Sp. The featured boats are pirate ships and assorted replicas of them. Pirates are a major part of GOM and FL history (no surprise). We're starting to get a gradual (so-to-speak) cooldown here in the Sandbar Peninsula. That starts the end of storm season.
Hope all is well with yas. We will get part of the solar eclipse here, but not the full 100%. Rec'd!!
