Friday Night Photos Garden II Orchid Orgy Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 05/31/2024 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
These are from the annual spring orchid exhibit at the San Diego Botanical Garden. Over 300 varieties of orchids and plants were on loan from the San Diego County Orchid Society and Palomar Orchid Society. Until I went to my first orchid exhibit a few years ago, I didn't know there were so many varieties of orchids. I was pleasantly surprised by all the different sizes, shapes, and colors.

amazing how they seem to be sticking out their tongues
great shots
thanks for the sweet air!
got no photos today, but an interpretive tune

question everything
Hi, QMS.
You're right, some of the orchids do look like they're sticking out their tongues. Probably do to too much exposure to the Rolling Stones.
Love the Calexico tune.

It is a tongue, of sorts
That flower shape is a tongue of sorts... see my comment below.
That form is common in flowers, purpose being to attract pollinators and have landing pad, often.

Hi Q, a different interpretation of a tongue
Check out the artwork on the labels of Tongue in Groove wines. Not only is the artwork great, they also create some of the best NZ pinot noir I’ve tasted. They are a group of long-time friends that have perfected their craft in a unique way. Plus they’re bio-dynamic.
Cheers
Orchids
I have grown orchids for decades. Can’t begin to match a botanical garden.
Thank you so much for these photos, including the bromeliad
Hi, WRG
The San Diego Botanical Garden does a fantastic job of displaying the orchids and plants for their annual spring exhibit. I've been to a half dozen orchid shows in the last few years and the SDBG is hands down the best.

Hi Social
Thank you for the beautifully frilly and decorative orchids, and for always tickling our imaginations.
Speaking of orchids, I recently put a cutting of a native orchid to adorn the moss covering the trunk of a Nikau Palm. So far, it’s only two leaves on a small stem, but I’m hoping for it to flower in a few months.
Cheers all
Hi, Janis
I love your totem by Mother Nature. I'm looking forward to seeing the flowers when they bloom.

Thank you Social, for the association
with a totem of nature. That association will now always enhance my vision of it.
Hi Janis!
Beautiful photo! I love yer moss J! That texture, like a thick carpet of velvet, and the structure, or relief, over the gentle curves of the trunk. Great shape. Wishing you beautiful blooms!
be well!

Thank you, d
It's my personal emerald city in the garden of OZ ; ).
Hi pixelators
Hi all,, Hey SP!
Love that tune, was an anthem to my people... the whole album.
Awesome photos of awesome flowers SP! I think every man remembers his first... orchid show. The LA Co. Botanical system (4 gardens) has outstanding orchid shows, I think annually but it moves locations amongst their various locations. It is worth seeing one, would recommend. Often those brightly colored petals laying flat at mouth of flower are targets and landing pads for pollinators.
I gotta fly so here is all I have handy... a very wet male Painted Bunting in the bird bath.
Hope all are well!
Happy Trails!

Hi, dystopian
I always thought QMS was a very under rated band. I've loved their music since I first heard it.
Love the Painted Bunting. Such colorful birds. Wish we had them around here.

Thanks for the splashy self-portrait
You are seared into my mind as a frolicsome painted bunting ; ).
Hi Janis!
That has to be the nicest thought ever held about me. It is a keeper.
Most I hear aren't fit for public consumption.
Have a great day!

Hi OBF
There are Painted Bunting in FL, and besides baths, they do come to feeders with white millet, which is the basic white seed in 'mixed' birdseed bags. In the shadows of bushes they like to hang out in, the broken up color fields in dappled light actually work as camouflage. Keep yer eyes peeled!

Oh boy, orchids. I have 4 healthy ones, a cutting that
looks good, and one failure. My fave is the 3rd one down, Sp. Spectacular image. I have that QMS LP on vinyl, and it's in decent shape. The LP art isn't half bad either. LOL. Big news here is the start of (triple ugh!) hurricane season. Ocean temps are just plain nuts. I don't allow myself to dwell on marine pollution like reef destruction. Too heartbreaking. On a positive note: Rec'd!!.

Hi, orlbucfan
The colors on the third one are pretty cool. I think of melted butter and syrup on a pancake when I look at it.

As is your way, gorgeous photos.
Love your OT, and support it and all your efforts, friend.

Got caught in some storm
I wish I could say how mind blowing, destructive, and dangerous these constant storms have been.
Yesterday, a rancher nearby was killed by a lightning strike, along with surrounding cattle.
Do you even know how well schooled and cautious men like that are? He NEVER saw it coming. Lightning killed him that came out of nowhere without warning. This spring has been a disaster for East Texas, and continues on. What is going on, and when does it stop?
This is not the new normal, I hope.
