Friday Night Photos Dreaming Edition

Happy Friday everyone. As always, post any photos you like.

I spent a little time yesterday playing around on the deep dream generator website.

https://deepdreamgenerator.com/

The site has filters you can apply to your photos or you can load your own images to use as a filter.
Depending on the filter and the photo it's used on the results can range from underwhelming to spectacular.

Base photo. Fine art shop Chinatown San Francisco

Filter photo. Orchid show display San Diego

I like the final image most of all. I'd prefer to be in that shop rather than the original.

A couple images from a week and a half ago ...

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

@dystopian

It’s been fun watching them bloom out this year. A family planted it recently for a loved one and they also feed the birds next to the stream.

@janis b

There’s a bench next to the tree and I sit and watch the bees play on the buds. It’s a weeping tree and it seems to have bloomed early this year. The bees coat their stomach with the pollen and become more yellow as they fly off.

I always thought they grew on vines not trees cuz I’ve only seen them in flower arrangements. Live and learn.

Europe[edit]
The flowering shoots of pussy willow are used both in Europe and America for spring religious decoration on Palm Sunday, as a replacement for palm branches, which do not grow that far north.[3]

Ukrainian and Russian Orthodox; Ruthenian, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Bavarian, and Austrian

Roman Catholics; Finnish and Baltic Lutherans and Orthodox; and various other Eastern European peoples carry pussy willows on Palm Sunday instead of palm branches. This custom has continued to this day among Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Romanian Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Ruthenian Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, Kashubian Catholic and Polish Catholic émigrés to North America. Sometimes, on Palm Sunday they will bless both palms and pussy willows in church. The branches will often be preserved throughout the year in the family's icon corner.[4]

Pussy willow also plays a prominent role in Polish Dyngus Day (Easter Monday) observances, continued also among Polish-Americans,[5] especially in the Buffalo, New York, area.

Do you know any birds in America that are able to fly through very dense forest with great speed and agility?

up
3 users have voted.

@janis b
The Cooper’s Hawk

Cooper’s hawks are agile forest hawks. They feed mostly on smaller birds. The long curved tail helps them maneuver through forests while hunting. The curved tail is a good way to tell a Cooper’s hawk from a sharp-shinned hawk.

They prey mostly on smaller birds but may also eat small reptiles and small mammals. Because of the short wings and long tail, Cooper’s hawks are very maneuverable. As with most raptors, Cooper’s hawks exhibit reverse sexual dimorphism… the females are larger than the males.

I wish I could find a video or take one, of the endemic Tui in flight. I have never seen a flyer as fast and as able to navigate with such precision such densely covered forest (bush).

dystopian's picture

@janis b In general most landbirds that are forest dwellers fly in the 20-40 mph range, some faster but probably mostly trying to evade an accipiter. Wink Some might hit 50 mph. I think it is generally considered about 14mph, the slowest a bird can maintain flight without wind assistance providing lift. With wind, many (particularly hawks and relatives) can hover in place without flapping. They need about 15 mph of it.

Hawks can hover and then descend at 120mph, plus.

Generally there's not a hawk in the vicinity when I observe the Tuis zooming by. I figure they're just in a hurry to get home or chasing another bird from it's territory.

I'm pretty sure that most chickadees and hummingbirds also have that talent depending upon what range of speeds you have in mind.

@janis b @janis b Hi Janis, sorry to be slow getting back to you... O49 and EL answered well though. Wink Accipiters are the group of fast flying hawks that use cover to launch a surprise attack. The Cooper's Hawk O49 mentioned is one, there are representitives all over the world of these short winged long tailed hawks. In general if you want to fly fast, you do that in the open skies, like Falcons or Swifts (both capable of 100-200 mph range). Speed does not mix well with obstacles.

Saw something wriggling in the dirt when I was down there sweeping up catkins and oak pollen, so ran and grabbed camera and magnifier. Science! lol Oak tree catkin debris always makes a Tobacco Road earworm fall out my lint trap, the one with Eric Burden usually. "gonna build me a new road". Right on. Anyway, even plain brown dirt produces life. Short and sweet.
