the monarchs are getting pretty rare around here, too.
this year has been much better than last year. last year i only saw two monarchs in our yard, which a decade ago would have had bunches of monarchs in it. this year i've seen about a half dozen monarchs.
the good news, though, is that we've had scads of yellow swallowtails, spice bush swallowtails, fritillarys. crescents and skippers. we've had a few red admirals and one giant swallowtail.
longwood gardens, where that monarch was photographed had a pretty good number of monarchs this year, also up from last year by my estimation.
with Swallowtails, Spice Bush Swallowtails and Mourning Cloaks. Just a couple of Monarchs this year, and a Red Admiral. The sooner they ban the guilty pesticides the better.
On the other hand, the humming birds have been very happy. So happy that a Cooper's Hawk sat in our birch last weekend pondering all the activity.
is fascinating to look at. It reminds me of some of the German, more clinicaly observed and perfectly composed studies of architecture and urban environments.

We used to get a squadron of Monarchs flapping around
