Everyone wanted to cash in on the collapse of the Ukrainian government.

CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has referred a collection of cases to New York federal prosecutors concerning whether several high-profile American lobbyists and operatives failed to register their work as foreign agents, according to people familiar with the matter.

The transfer of the inquiries marks an escalation of Mueller's referrals to the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York in the period since he turned over a case involving President Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

Since the spring, Mueller has referred matters to SDNY involving longtime Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta and his work for his former firm, the Podesta Group, and former Minnesota Republican Rep. Vin Weber and his work for Mercury Public Affairs, the sources said.

One source said that former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig, a former partner at law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, is also part of the inquiry.

None of the entities involved have been charged with wrongdoing, and there is no indication the SDNY inquiry will result in criminal charges

The Podesta Group has said it was fully cooperating with the special counsel's office and said it didn't register as a foreign agent for its ECFMU work because that group had misrepresented itself. The Podesta Group said it registered its work for ECFMU instead with Congress, based on what it said was faulty information the non-profit had provided and an outside legal opinion on the matter. The ECFMU had given the firm a statement attesting that it wasn't an arm of a foreign government, the Podesta Group said.

EX-OBAMA LAWYER WHO WORKED WITH MANAFORT ON UKRAINE PROJECT ABRUPTLY LEAVES LAW FIRM
Chuck Ross | Reporter. 04:25 PM 04/24/2018

Greg Craig, the White House counsel for President Barack Obama, abruptly left his law firm as it has come under scrutiny from the special counsel’s investigation.

A spokeswoman for Skadden Arps confirmed to The Daily Caller News Foundation that Craig is no longer with the firm. She did not address whether his departure is related to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Skadden Arps has come under scrutiny because of its work with Paul Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, on behalf of the Ukrainian government in 2012. A team led by Craig helped produce a report that sought to justify the imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko, a political rival of Viktor Yanukovych, the Ukrainian president at the time and an ally of Vladimir Putin’s.

It is not clear whether Craig is in any legal jeopardy. But The New York Times reported in February that Craig was directly involved in promoting the Tymoshenko report to reporters and members of Congress. Neither Craig nor Skadden Arps registered as foreign agents for the work.

Another former Skadden lawyer, Alex van der Zwaan, has pleaded guilty to Mueller’s prosecutors for lying about his contacts with Rick Gates, a former Manafort business partner, and a Ukrainian consultant with links to Russia’s spy agencies.

On one hand there is the possible grant of immunity in the Manafort trial? Tony is on the witness list. I haven't seen anything saying he turned down immunity.

Tony Podesta Offered Immunity To Testify Against Paul Manafort: Report

And on the other hand Mueller passes Podesta off to NY DA for prosecution? Can Mueller pull it back if Tony accepts the Manafort immunity?

How the hell does that work?

On the other other hand I have five fingers and a thumb...

Essentially why I have believed for some time that this whole damn thing is just a dog and pony show. I have never liked Trump, but TDS (trump derangement syndrome) is absolutely a real thing.

For the life of me, I can't figure out what the hell the end game to all this is....

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

@Crazytimes
Everyone at the top, Republican and Democrats alike, have dirty hands. This is common knowledge, even if unequally applied based on one’s party affiliation. While trying to make it look like a major house cleaning is in progress, Mueller is working like hell to keep all the major players safe so the game can continue. Immunities are handed out like candy at a 4th of July parade. Insider corruption is very, very lucrative and very pervasive.

The continued flogging of the Russia, Russia, Russia narrative by Mueller is a fringe benefit that those suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome will surely appreciate.

I’m afraid there’s no saving us from our faux democracy by working within its legal system, because that legal system itself will be used to protect those that govern, whatever the cost.

@ovals49 I'm just glad I'm not the only one who sees it that way. Sometimes I feel surrounded by people that don't see the big picture and maybe never will Sad

I fear the corruption is so deep, it will never be fixed. Sad.
