Exclusive: Clinton campaign also hacked in attacks on Democrats - sources

WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The computer network used by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign was hacked as part of a broad cyber attack on Democratic political organizations, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The latest attack, which was disclosed to Reuters on Friday, follows reports of two other hacks on the Democratic National Committee and the party’s fundraising committee for candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives.

*
Hackers, whom U.S. intelligence officials have concluded were Russian, gained access to the entire network of the fundraising Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, of DCCC, said people familiar with the matter, detailing the extent of the breach to Reuters for the first time.

Access to the full DCCC network would have given the hackers access to everything from emails to strategy memos and opposition research prepared to support Democratic candidates in campaigns for the House.

The hack of the DCCC, which is based in Washington, was reported first by Reuters on Thursday, ahead of Clinton’s speech in Philadelphia accepting the Democratic party’s nomination.

The hacker worked in the same time zones as Russia, and left, on purpose, a signature in Russian Cyrillic.

Whoa...... it must be true. Not.

Unfortunately, the Chilcot report, which paints a damning picture of Tony Blair’s machinations to bring about the U.S.-U.K. invasion of Iraq, has been given no coverage by U.S. mainstream media.

you can not establish and maintain a two way connection with the machine being hacked. That requires a "handshake" between machines. This handshake will result in painting the actual entrance and exit ip of the attacking machine(s).

However, logs can be altered.

Hacking and phishing and ransomware are literally cottage industries in Russia and eastern Europe. Those professions employ 10s of thousands of workers and generate many billions of dollars in annual revenue. If the hackers were Russian, chances are they were small businessmen making a living and not government.

The salient point for me is not that Russians or anybody else is hacking computers, it's that Democrats are so fracking dumb that they put Social Security numbers into plain text emails, store financial data in unencrypted databases, and don't bother installing security updates and antimalware software. I've heard that the DNC server wasn't rebooted for more than a year, which means no major OS or security patches were installed and any hackers logged in had free reign for as long as they wanted.

It's typical of the arrogance of the psychopathic personality, since they're just so special that nobody can touch them. Or else. Hard to threaten/'get' an anonymous hacker, though.

Some years ago, around 2008, I set up a website for my college group's alumni. I checked the logs daily to see if anyone was accessing the site and sure enough, there were dozens of visits even the first days of the site. The visits were almost all from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, China, and India.

I doubt any of them were interested in Homecoming 1975, but our little site was a possible doorway to the shared disk that was hosting us and that has value. The point is that every site is attacked every day and almost always, as edg says, by people looking to make a buck.

As I read the post about this, the first thing I thought was that they were 'Russian to blame' them as PR back-up for earlier blame of the Russians earlier... We've always hated Eastasia... such a handy diversion.

when I have to agree with Clapper.

Americans need to calm down and stop blaming Russia for hacking the Democratic National Committee, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said on Thursday.

"I'm somewhat taken aback by the hyperventilation on this," Clapper said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. "I'm shocked someone did some hacking," he added sarcastically. "That's never happened before."

Who's got the info? Is it going to be given to Wiki or sold back as ransom? And how come all of this stuff is coming out NOW?

So, is it really the Russians?

What would it be the 'key' in this particular case? And why would they bother? They've seen how much hatred there is for the Clintons in this country. They're probably just waiting for them to screw up and get caught up in another scandal. It's only a matter of time.

I can't imagine what appalling new thing even the Clintons could find to have a fresh scandal erupt over. I thought they'd pretty much done/planned/said everything disgusting/illegal that's reasonably possible. But I suppose that if anyone could get creative about anything unethical/criminal which was likely to prove personally lucrative or power-increasing, that would be them.

Seen from here in Dresden, ginning up hatred against the Russians all over again seems not just stupid but ungrateful and frankly something a Hitler would pull. One of the major parties has turned on the gas jets and is playing with fascist foreign-policy fire, and its candidate’s name isn’t Trump.
