Great song. never been another Janis.

Thanks for all these tunes, joe.

janis was a one of a kind talent. i've heard lots of people attempt to imitate her (which they shouldn't bother with) but nobody that even comes close.

Loved Janis in the day.

Been busy getting the mowing under control. Tropical storm remnant headed our way this weekend. Not complaining mind you...we can do with the rain. Last of summer seed goes in tomorrow to take advantage of the moisture.

Hope you and yours are doing well. Thanks for the music and OT!

I anticipate corn and soybean Illinois crop failures. IL is a major producer. Look for higher prices.

BTW, I read that Bill gates is buying up family farms and is a (if not the) major owner of farmland.

German-colored snark and way of kidding is not understood easily over there in the USian land. I am sorry for that. I knew that Joe would understand it and I thank him for his generous patience and his defense of my 'blah, blah'.

I am a die-hard Joe Shikspack fan, to make that clear.

And believe me I know all too well, how hard it is to understand each other cross-culturally. It is an issue that follows me like a shadow in my life.

I hope I did not offend you personally somehow. If I did in the past or recently, please accept my apologies. Nothing for Ungood and have a good one.

I am offensive by nature.
Snark aside, I'm sure you can admit to being overwhelmed by current events.
We all are. That's why we need to pay attention to what's going on around the world as well as own own little slice of heaven or hell.
Best to you and yours.

checking out if all Germans are pulling your leg or if it's just me. I feel lonely over here without some Americans.

Have a long, long break and a well deserved vacation from your 'terrorists' over there. We have some here too, in case you would miss them. So, don't be shy and check them out.

See you. Smile

Never can stop enjoying hearing Janis! Am up in Ann Arbor Michigan visiting my sister and is a welcome change in temperatures compared to Austin and surrounds. My first week here it got up in the 80’s and people were complaining about the heat. Of course this is hot for them this time of year.

We have been watching a Peregrine chick that is up in one of the towers on campus and has not yet flown. The parents are in and out and around and it looks like the first flight could be anytime now. It is a real treat.

Went and saw “The Truffle Hunters” which was a very wonderful story of the men who hunted the truffles with their amazing dogs. The people buying the truffles not so nice. I kept calling the movie the Vultures because that was what they were.

It was overcast and rainy today and so we went to Detroit and visited the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Of course as a history teacher much was familiar but the presentation was outstanding and there were some things that were new to me. Spent a full afternoon there and people screaming about “critical race theory” might have trouble with some of the historical documents that were displayed.

Hope you and yours have a wonderful weekend and keep up the news blackout in your life for the weekend!

@jakkalbessie

i don't know how long you are going to be up in ann arbor, but usually sometime in july they have a blues festival. they stopped it in the early 00's but i hear that they started it up again several years ago. i don't know if covid will stop it this year like it did chicago's festival, but it might be worth looking into if you are going to be around for a while.

heh, of course they're complaining about the heat. i used to go up to maine every summer when i was a kid and as soon as i'd get there from maryland where it would already be in the 90's a lot of the time, they'd be complaining about days that were in the low to mid 70's. Smile

heh, i wonder if they are having trouble rounding up decent guests for their new show. if they are having cenk on, clearly either their standards or their appeal to guests (or both) are in the dumper.

Hey Joe, Hope it's all as good as the sounds... Janis is tops in my book, she never sang a bad song. Big Brother took, and takes, a lot of flack for being 'sloppy', but I think they were great. Yeah sure the Pearl band was studio pro musicians of a more learned level, but I don't think they sounded any better. There was something about the match of Big Brother and Janis that was just sooooo right. Made in heaven. Not as polished but also not as over-produced. The rawness was part of the magic.

Have a great news-free long weekend!

heh, big brother was a band that wound up with an outstanding talent in their midst and tried to remain a band with a vision and an aesthetic. full tilt was a band about supporting janis' talent. they are both great bands in my book.

@dystopian @dystopian @dystopian much prefer Joplin with Big Brother than with Pearl, but for me neither band was right for her, nor was she right for either band. I hope that someday a musician will explain to me why her voice was far more thrilling (more depth and nuance) live (1967-68) than it is in the recordings.

Just the voice and good guitar playing (early '64 but without the heavy Texas twang of her earliest recordings):

(btw - there were a few bootleg copies of this around not long after she died.)

A year later, she was putting more of her own style/signature on a few songs:

Compare the '64 "Nobody Knows You" with the '65 version.

@Marie I'll check the vids out... I love anything Janis or Jorma so far. Wink Maybe the junk took an edge off her voice in later days?

@dystopian Perhaps she merely had one of those voices that recordings can't fully capture. However, I tend to think that it was something else.

That Hollywood Palace clip (Dec 1968) - Summertime & I Need a Man to Love - that Joe posted is interesting. Her voice was good, but the band and audience were half dead. It's possible that she and the band were in sync and loose and the audience was with them when I saw them and that only occurred regularly for about a year. Recall that when "Cheap Thrills" was released the response among those that had seen them live was "meh."

The Demo link I posted was recorded with only a guitarist. Gurley added the other instruments before releasing it in the mid '90s. (Don't know the back story on how and why the demo was recorded, who had custody of it after that, and how Gurley ended up working with it.) Might have been recorded during that brief time in Texas when she wasn't using (off the meth and before the H).

to Port Arthur, visit her museum, take a picture of her statue.
I sorely miss the news, since I have to work, can't necessarily hunt around the tubes myself, and always rely on joe to get me started.
But, water lily parks can be just all that, and avoiding routine chores, no matter what kind, is really a freedom of mind and stress. Go, joe!
Well, I spent my afternoon shopping and have more to do tomorrow.
It's always something.
I may actually subscribe to Taibbi on substack. Anyone here a subscriber? He has an article up on the suppression of any news on social media and msm news about Ivermectin. Curious if anyone has access to the entire article. I only get email excerpt teasers.

especially for Big Bother. Loved those guys. Live, at the Fillmore and Avalon, they were simply a different unit (like the dead and airplane as well). Don't know where the original of this comment is, or what it said, wrote it much earlier in the afternoon. Ah well, such is life.

Hope you enjoyed your relaxation time.
