Shaz and I went to the other side of town yesterday, the West side of Portland, across the river. There is a cultural difference between Southeast Portland and Southwest Portland that might be hard to explain. As we approached the Morrison Bridge I joked "do we need passports to do this?"
Our first stop was The Rack, supposedly Nordstrom's cheap outlet store. Jeans for $90? I don't think that's too outrageous in some instances but those were the discount prices for men's jeans. Shaz found some real bargains among the women's clothes but thought they were too ugly. Something ugly at $200 and something ugly at $11 means you don't buy either.
Then we went to Anthropologie, where she found out that this ugly fashion thing must have taken place while she wasn't looking.
But here's my point. She found a pair of overalls for $380, made in China. I thought the idea of sending manufacturing overseas, including the garment industry, was so clothes wouldn't cost all that much to make, resulting in lower prices. On second thought it's more like having them made outside the US is only to lower costs for the companies. They'll keep charging us whatever they can get away with.
Naturally this made me think about the TPP and how it's going to be bad news for us when it goes through...because "they" want it to go through and they'll figure out how to make it happen.
how much cheaper things are for us here because of the trade deals. Apparently, it is cheap when you have an income that make the item look like it is $5 instead of $100.
$380 is more than I have spent on all clothes in the last 10 years.
