After Trump and the Senate Republicans lose they won't have any motivation to help citizens. They'll do their best to burn everything down. As soon as Biden (or Harris) is in charge, all of a sudden the deficit will be the most important thing ever and only a Grand Bargain to slash Social Security can hope to save us.
That's what collapse looks like. All options are bad.

No doubt about this. It will be the Cat Food Commission on steroids.

But it won't just be Social Security. Include everything from Medicare to the Post Office. All will be handed to their biggest donors with privatization deals that would make Boris Yeltsin blush. In a way, Trump has nothing on this crew. The biggest thing holding Trump back is that the Democrats wanting it for themselves, therefor they have to stop him ...or at least look like they are stopping him. Or something.

This doesn't make any sense. Can he do that? Isn't it up to congress to continue or not? Wouldn't republicans passing some kind of aid help their election odds? I just don't get it. Wacko

@Daenerys
about why McConnell won't bring another bill up for a vote. The bailout for large corporations happened in the first bill. There are enough Republican Senators who think nothing more should be done that he doesn't have a functioning majority of Republicans to pass any bill. The two parties are so far apart on this that to get a dozen Democrats to vote for a bill it would end up looking pretty much like what Pelosi passed in May. That would get most or all the Democrats to vote for it, but then McConnell would need to get a half dozen Republicans to vote for it, including himself. That would be seen as worse than doing nothing in terms of their election prospects. And then Trump would veto it.
All options are bad. So McConnell is going with "do nothing and hope for the best".

the fact that OM's 'base' will likely be happy with this decision, it's Pelosi--who's been dragging her feet for weeks and months (while negotiating with Mnuchin)--who will have to answer to her Base. IOW, it's the Dem Party Base that will be upset. (His supporters will probably celebrate.)

Personally, I'm dead against repealing SALT, unless, the deduction that applied to transportation employees (per diem) was reinstated. (airline and trucking industry--maybe, others)
The per diem deduction not only affects far more people, it affects people of more modest incomes.

But, heh--we all know she's on the side of the "little people," eh?

Biggrin

Of course, depending on 'how' it was fashioned, I had hoped for another stimulus package. Chances are--it would have been a giveaway to corporations/the wealthy. So, guess we'll have to wait and see what Dems will do.

He was tweeting that it needed to be done, more than once iirc, and maybe said it in a presser or something as well. Nothing happened, but multiple vacations for our hard-working reps had to happen, during a crisis no doubt. They are all dragging their feet and have been.

Maybe he's just playing reverse psychology so they'll pass something out of spite lol.

It IS 2020, after all, so not much surprises me anymore.

the FED is sitting on $340 unspent billions from the CARES act while 98,000 businesses have closed permanetly, 10 of millions have lost their jobs permanetly, along with their health insurance, lost their unemployment, and are facing eviction very soon. But hey...

From WallStreetOnParade:

The Federal Reserve’s H.4.1 release shows that the $114 billion it has received thus far from the Treasury has been allocated as follows: $10 billion to the Commercial Paper Funding Facility (CPFF); $37.5 billion to the Corporate Credit Facilities; $37.5 billion to the Main Street Facilities; $17.5 billion to the Municipal Liquidity Facility; $10 billion to the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF II); and $1.5 billion to the Money Market Mutual Fund Liquidity Facility.

The bulk of those programs are helping Wall Street, not Main Street. The one program actually called the “Main Street Facilities,” bears little resemblance to the kind of help actual Main Street businesses need right now. Minimum loan amounts in the Fed’s Main Street program are set at $250,000 while many businesses on real Main Streets in America would be highly reluctant to take a loan of that size, given the likely prospect right now that their business won’t make it.

Mnuchin wants to give $400 a week extra, Pelosi want to give $600 a week, WTF can't they just agree on $500 a week, and split the difference? Fucking morons, it's absurd!

Some "leadership" by Trump, holding the nation hostage.

If the Democrats want a land slide vote, it' would take just 3 little words, Medicare For All.

@RantingRooster

i just took a break and looked at WSoP and was about to bring it. i'd copied a bit more:

When both parties in Congress came together in March to pass the CARES Act, which was signed into law by President Trump on March 27, the clear intention of the legislation was for the U.S. Treasury to hand over $454 billion of taxpayers’ money to the Federal Reserve. The Fed, in turn, was to leverage the money by 10 times to approximately $4.54 trillion to deploy to keep the economy moving, credit flowing, workers employed and businesses alive until the pandemic had been brought under control.
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell made an unprecedented appearance on the Today show on March 26 and explained the plan like this:

“In certain circumstances like the present, we do have the ability to essentially use our emergency lending authorities and the only limit on that will be how much backstop we get from the Treasury Department. We’re required to get full security for our loans so that we don’t lose money. So the Treasury puts up money as we estimate what the losses might be…Effectively $1 of loss absorption of backstop from Treasury is enough to support $10 of loans.”

But according to the latest H.4.1 release from the Federal Reserve (and backed up by recent Senate Testimony), six months after the CARES Act was signed into law, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has handed only $114 billion of the $454 billion over to the Fed. That leaves $340 billion allocated by Congress unaccounted for. (See Paragraph 5 (Liabilities) and the related footnote 14 at this link on the Fed’s H.4.1 release.)

I admit I'm agnostic on this, as in the bolded IF:

‘What these businesses need more of are Paycheck Protection Plan (PPP) loans where the loan will be forgiven if they keep their workers on payroll. That would allow workers to avoid eviction and help small apartment building landlords stay out of foreclosure. The PPP program, run through the Small Business Administration, ended on August 8. Despite the desperate need, Congress can’t get its act together and pass a new PPP program.’

And this is the wiki page for the march CARES act.

back to chores; have fun! note: i didn't tag this 'Realpolitik' to show my Caption. ; )

or Trump's usual tantrum?

He had an opportunity to turn his dwindling chances around by engaging voters with positive actions that would help individuals and companies. Unemployment insurance payments and cash to the Airlines and Restaurants, for example.

But, NO! he's going to let it all burn down.

If there is a strategy, it's beyond me.

from all of this. They're willing to risk death, willing to sacrifice their families, so that they can keep the farce tragedy going for a little while longer. Do they want their children to grow up in a world without National Socialism Trumpism? Better to hand out the cyanide capsules take maskless selfies together. El Duce Trumpo stands bravely on the portico, saluting nothing, then carries his cloud of virus into the Imperial Palace White House where he will give orders to imaginary divisions to defend his regime against the clear majority of voters his enemies.

his supporters will very likely celebrate this move.

Hope you and Mr WD are getting along well. We're looking forward to the cooler weather. Since we stay so close to home, seasonal flu is not a major concern for us (personally). Of course, I'm concerned for folks who chose to, or must, run around during flu season. Hope the vaccinations this year are more effective than usual.

Take care; stay safe.

neither of us get flu shots, as the only flu shot i ever got...gave me the worst disease i've ever had. a client who happened to be a local doc convinced me to do so...never again! it lasted 3 weeks, and i was unable to work lest i spread it past the one insistent-for-an-appt. client...i'd infected.

ah, we're just livin' the dream here/s, feelin' old, tired, in the way, hurtin', and are ready to cross to the other side...together, if possible. ; ) most nights i remind him that once upon a time he was able to tell me what the point of all this is (something he' read in the Urantia Book); he forgets, lol. so we get the giggles, say 'Ka-ching: chalk another day on the cell wall!'

cooler sounds good, even here in SW CO. wunderground says it'll freeze hard here on sunday night, so mr. wd will harvest everything worthwhile and bring it in before then. i'm tired of plucking basil leaves, blanching and shocking them...so i'll use the plants as foliage in floral arrangements.

you stay safe and well, too, though.

hours after his original 'stop negotiations' Tweet, one wonders if he'd seen Sergeant Down Jones begin to tank...or what?

there is some speculation on twitter that his covid-19 treatment drugs are...causing him to be even more erratic?

in barry grey's coverage at wsws, he skewers #KinteKlothPelosi's lame-ass reaction, and reminds us of this:

"In fact, the Democrats colluded with Trump and the Republicans to allow the expiration of the $600-a-week federal unemployment supplement on July 31, reducing the income of millions of workers by two-thirds or more. This followed their near-unanimous support for the CARES Act passed in March, which has provided some $6 trillion in handouts and virtually free credit to the Wall Street banks and major corporations. Unlimited cash infusions by the Fed have fueled a massive rise on the stock market, which has boosted the wealth of America’s billionaires by $845 billion during the pandemic."

Nancy hasn't answered him on twitter yet.

i'll be back soonish; worked myself to a frazzle last night. ; )
