An open thread for gentle discussions of all things Covid.

Hey! Good Morning!

Blue states are rolling back mask rules – but experts warn it’s too soon

Several US states, many of them governed by Democrats, began rolling back mask mandates this week, a move public health experts warn could set back progress battling Covid. On Wednesday, Massachusetts, Illinois, New York and Rhode Island joined California, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Oregon in lifting mask mandates for some public places.

The wave of relaxations comes after months of private meetings among state leaders and political focus groups after the November elections, according to reports. “Now, it’s time to give people their lives back,” Sean Maloney, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, tweeted in support of New York suspending its indoor mask-or-vaccine mandate.

Yet the lifting of rules has not been universally applauded and is coming at a time when the vast majority of the country (99%) is still seeing high transmission of the virus, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Public polls show consistent support for mask mandates and other precautions, and experts say the time to relax precautions is not here yet – and acting prematurely could prolong this wave.

“In my view, it’s too soon. I feel like we’re anticipating too much,” said Justin Lessler, a professor of epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. “We’re being too confident that things are going to keep going the direction that they have been going.” The CDC’s director, Rochelle Walensky, also recently said that “now is not the moment” to drop masks in public, although the agency is reportedly weighing changes to its guidance on masks.

Blue States Drop COVID Mandates & Ignore CDC Recommendations

Sweeping bill on inquiry into US Covid response sees bipartisan support

A sweeping new bill with powerful bipartisan support in the US Senate would establish an inquiry into the country’s Covid-19 response similar to the 9/11 Commission, among other provisions aimed at preventing the next pandemic.

The new Covid commission would inform the US response to future outbreaks as well as the current impact of the disease. The bill will be co-sponsored by Senator Patty Murray of Washington and Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina, who plan to mark it up in committee in coming weeks.

“The pain of this pandemic is unforgettable, and we have a responsibility to make sure its lessons are unforgettable, too,” Murray said.

The legislation, called the Prevent Pandemics Act, would lay the groundwork to enshrine new powers in federal health agencies.

It would also require Senate confirmation to appoint the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and it would better outline the duties of the assistant secretary for preparedness and response, a position Burr created in a 2006 law on pandemic preparedness.

Joe Rogan pledges to ‘try harder’ after Spotify misinformation controversy

Joe Rogan has addressed controversy over his Spotify podcast, hours after the streaming service announced a plan to tackle the spread of Covid-19 misinformation.

In a 10-minute video posted to Instagram on Sunday night, the comedian and host pledged to “try harder to get people with differing opinions on” and “do my best to make sure I’ve researched these topics”.

“A lot of people … have a distorted perception of what I do,” he said, defending two recent episodes of the Joe Rogan Experience that featured guests who shared Covid conspiracy theories. He called these guests “highly credentialed … people [with] an opinion that’s different from the mainstream narrative.”

Rogan framed his podcast – which reaches an estimated 11 million listeners per episode – as “just conversations” which “started off as … having fun and talking”.

“It’s become what it is today, which is some out of control juggernaut that I barely have control of,” he said. “Often times I have no idea what I’m gonna talk about until I sit down and talk to people.

“I am gonna do my best in the future to balance things out.”

Pfizer seeks US authorization of Covid vaccine for children under five

Children under five, the last group of Americans still ineligible for vaccines against Covid-19, may soon receive emergency authorization for the shots, but getting all children vaccinated remains a serious challenge in the US.

Pfizer and its German pharmaceutical partner BioNTech announced on Tuesday that they were requesting emergency-use authorization of their vaccine for children aged six months to four years.

The application was submitted at the request of the US Food and Drug Administration, the companies said in a statement – an unusual move by the regulator.

The FDA’s independent advisers will meet on 15 February to discuss the application and the shots, containing just one-tenth of the dose given to adults, could be available to this population of 19 million in the US by the end of the month.

The agency’s decision could come within weeks, but that isn’t the only hurdle. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also has to sign off, and many parents then have to be persuaded to get their young children vaccinated.

Pfizer accused of pandemic profiteering as profits double

Pfizer made nearly $37bn (£27bn) in sales from its Covid-19 vaccine last year – making it one of the most lucrative products in history – and has forecast another bumper year in 2022, with a big boost coming from its Covid-19 pill Paxlovid. The US drugmaker’s overall revenues in 2021 doubled to $81.3bn, and it expects to make record revenues of $98bn to $102bn this year.

The bumper sales prompted accusations from campaigners of “pandemic profiteering”. The group Global Justice Now said the annual revenue of $81bn was more than the GDP of most countries and accused Pfizer of “ripping off public health systems”. ...

Global Justice Now pointed out that Pfizer’s Covid-19 jab was invented by BioNTech, supported by €100m (£84m) in debt financing from the publicly owned European Investment Bank and a €375m grant from the German government. Tim Bierley, a pharma campaigner at the group, said: “The development of mRNA vaccines should have revolutionised the global Covid response. “But we’ve let Pfizer withhold this essential medical innovation from much of the world, all while ripping off public health systems with an eye-watering mark-up.”

GoFundMe removes donation page for Canadian trucker protest

Fundraising website GoFundMe has taken down a page accepting donations in support of truck drivers protesting against vaccine mandates in Canada, adding that it would refund all donations.

The “Freedom Convoy 2022” began as a movement against a Canadian vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers, but has turned into a rallying point against public health measures in Canada. It has also gained increasing support among Republicans, including Donald Trump.

Some US Republicans vowed to investigate GoFundMe’s move. ...

GoFundMe took down the Freedom Convoy 2022 fundraiser page on Friday, saying it violated its terms of service.

Protesters have shut down downtown Ottawa, the Canadian capital, for eight days now, with some participants waving Confederate or Nazi flags and some saying they wanted to dissolve Canada’s government. To the increasing fury of residents, Ottawa police have largely stood by and watched as some protesters smashed windows, threatened reporters and healthcare workers, and abused racial minorities.

Victory is possible. Imminent.

Threats by Doug Ford to sieze GoSendMe funds were refuted directly by the company. They said, "We will administer funds and disburse them directly to Freedom Truckers." Period.

Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario will announce the removal of All Vaccine Mandates. The Trucker Blocades were effective and left Canada with few, if any, viable options.

Trudeau may or may not survive.

The Truckers will remain in place until Victory is secured. The busiest Bridge carrying Trade on the CA/US Border will remain shut until Promises Made are Promises Believed.

It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood.

UPDATE---OH WELL. NOT SUCH A WONDERFUL DAY AFTER ALL.

This could not have been much worse.

Doug Ford Lied about his control of the Freedom Trucker Funds. Yes, again. He clearly intends to repeat this particular Big Lie every chance he gets.

Then, State of Emergency declared and the name calling. "Siege of Ottawa" "Illegal Occupation" and so forth.

Apopleptic, rightly so, about $750 Million Dollars per day in lost Trade Revenue across the Ambassador Bridge and promises that he will end it Now. How??? IDK. And I will guess, Ford has no idea either.

Ford seemed to me to be having a Toddler Tantrum. Stamping his foot. Or whatever it is a cornered trapped rat or a wounded bull might do in a similar situation.

He says, on the vaccine passports which he is ON TAPE declaring an end to yesterday, that he will only listen to the Doctors. He means The Wrong Doctors, clearly. The same geniuses that spew The Science that intends to imprison us all.

Key factors contributing to the current heightened threat environment include:

The proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions:
For example, there is widespread online proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding unsubstantiated widespread election fraud and COVID-19. Grievances associated with these themes inspired violent extremist attacks during 2021.
Malign foreign powers have and continue to amplify these false or misleading narratives in efforts to damage the United States

of president. But this Trudeau comes across across as some kind of effete, not willing
to engage with the low lifers, such as journalists and truckers.

Whatever happened to the essential workers meme? Wasn't that the excuse the rulers used

Here is a dude who analysed the reported adverse events of vaccines.
> he wanted to look at the "similarites" and probably cause

What did he find out?
> Only correlating factor of adverse events are the batch numbers
> only 5% of Vaccine Batches are responsible for 90% of all side effects of the vaccine.

> conclusion: Not everyone gets an active ingredient

Here is a explanation of the deadly Batch distribution:
https://www.bitchute.com/video/YeNc0yUknwaX/

This would explain why elitist politicians and their underlings are not dropping dead.
only certain batches are tagged as "experimental". such batches started with 3,000% mortalities compared to normal or baseline or median batches (negligible mortality, about 1-1.5 deaths per batch, compared to the bad batches, which were as much as 3,000 dead per batch. it appears that the "bad batches, occurring with predictable regularity, become less "bad" over iterations, reducing from 3000% to 2500%, to lower, etc... indicating people KNOW they are killing people, and they are trying to improve the "vax" by testing it legally on willing human victims/guineau pigs. so this is a violation of the human value systems agreed upon after WW2, and time for some eugenicists to be impaled on the shaft of truth."

As regular readers of The Dose may recall, I had one of those Bad Batches, Pfizer EN5318.

My generally excellent health, low weight and sufficient Vitamin D were what allowed me to suffer for "only " 7 months and eventually regain my full strength. My batch was the second deadliest in the US. The categories were deaths, permanent disabilities and my category, Ongoing illness.

Here is the website if you want to check your batch. Keep in mind that MOST Adverse Events go unreported. Your doctor has to make the report and we know which team they are playing for.

I’m listening to Yeadon who used to be VP of Pfizer on the bad batches. The mRNA shots are experimental, but what experiments are they running? If there are bad batches that they are aware have severe adverse effects then why haven’t they been pulled from the market yet? The first part is kinda dry, but don’t give up and make sure that you listen to the end. At the end of his discussion I remembered that most people who died in hospitals wouldn’t have if they had gotten treatment other than remdisiver, put on ventilators and not given fluids. People died in agonizing ways because they were given those things. Doctors who treat with repurposed drugs have above 70% recovery rates. Remdisiver is around 10% if that high. The good news is that all mandates are being lifted. No mandatory jabs, masks, passports and finally the damn masks are coming off kid’s faces!

My "Asking for a friend" was a bad attempt at humor.

In the Bay Area we've always had a lot of people who masked. I'm guessing some because of air quality, some because of allergies and some because they live and work in very crowded areas and ride public transit at peak commute times and are cautious. I dunno except for all those who mask up during fire season if the smoke gets too bad.

So, I'm reading through this column and I find that "Blue States" are rolling back mandates even though it might be too soon, regardless of the fact that the CDC says it's too soon, etc. and I think of all those mentioned above and I think "even if it isn't premature, those folks will mask up" (and possibly get harassed for it, but not so bad as in some other places). After all, rolling back the mandates isn't equivalent to a prohibition.

This, of course, leads to "why do supposedly at least moderately educated people need to be told when to mask up and when not to, or at least when "somesay" it's no longer necessary. This then led to my question, just to jiggle that little circuit in people's brains that "perhaps its up to me to decide when to wear one and when not to regardless of some sort of Gavin versus The CDC imaginary cage match.

@enhydra lutris We will stick with masks at my place of employment. I am a hairstylist and work with 2-3 others. We have stuck with masks thru this entire pandemic. Never took a break when other salons did. Never let our clients come in without masking. None of us stylists have gotten Covid (that we know of) .
I know that there are studies showing both effectiveness and lack thereof. But I think it is a pretty solid piece of anecdata that 3 stylists could see 15-30 clients per week for 1.5 years and not ever catch Covid.

It’s funny how people see the same event and interpret it in different ways depending on whether they support the event or not. Human shields? I doubt any parents in their right mind would do that. But it sure gets people to be against it doesn’t it? Maybe they should be called nazis and Putin apologists too.

But boy that’s a stretch to say that anyone advocates for someone to murder people in the streets. I’d say that they are just making crap up for whatever reason they are.

That was close. I thought my thoughts on the truckers was clear. Smile

I totally agree with you on this. The hypocrisy is boundless isn’t it? I don’t know if you read Greenwald’s piece on the ways the shitlibs have changed but he nailed them.

Constitutional illiteracy to the side, the “hate speech” framework for justifying censorship is now insufficient because liberals are eager to silence a much broader range of voices than those they can credibly accuse of being hateful. That is why the newest, and now most popular, censorship framework is to claim that their targets are guilty of spreading “misinformation” or “disinformation.” These terms, by design, have no clear or concise meaning. Like the term “terrorism,” it is their elasticity that makes them so useful.

Again it comes down to who gets to decide what is misinformation:

'When liberals’ favorite media outlets, from CNN and NBC to The New York Times and The Atlantic, spend four years disseminating one fabricated Russia story after the next — from the Kremlin hacking into Vermont’s heating system and Putin’s sexual blackmail over Trump to bounties on the heads of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, the Biden email archive being “Russian disinformation,” and a magical mystery weaponthat injures American brains with cricket noises — none of that is “disinformation” that requires banishment.'

It took me a few times reading it to finally see what they are doing. J

@snoopydawg And speaking of hypocrisy, did anyone else catch the Macron tweet posted at NC today? In the "Links"?
This tweet suggested that Macron refused to be tested for Covid when he met with Putin. All because he was afraid to let the Russians get a copy of his DNA by doing the test.
And he isn't considered a crazy conspiracy theorist, but anyone who thinks vaccine passports or vaccine mandates are a bad idea is a conspiracy theorist? Its ok for our elected officials to be paranoid, but not the citizens?

for that reason. What’s good for the goose isn’t good for the gander it appears. In Utah one hospital has a spit test for Covid. My first thought was no way I’m willingly giving up my DNA. The PTB already have enough ways to access it if they can, but they’re going to have to work for mine. I’m not sure if the new laws are anyone who gets arrested has to give theirs up or if it’s for speeding tickets. Probably the 1st one, but there should be a court decision behind it first. In the article I posted in the EBs it talks about all the ways government has stripped our rights away from us with not much peeps from us. The 2nd is the only one remaining fully intact. On to Biden since 1973

Keep in mind that this wave of silly-assed name calling from the Blue Health Nazis against the truck drivers is not aimed at anybody but other Blue Health Nazis. Either you assume the conclusion of Health Rules Save Lives or you wind up getting called stupid, fascist and in need of incarceration. This rhetoric is not intended to seek new converts to the Vaxxist Cause -- it is clearly a rear guard action aimed at holding their "majority" together.

That Vaxxist agenda has never been ratified by any democratic vote in the USA, but it is wall to wall consensus in the legacy media and all the big Tech platforms. I have been wondering where the blue collar majority would land as the Vaccine Mandate Narrative was collapsing due to internal contradictions and a total failure to end the pandemic.

Pathetic that my social class of upper middle class boomer and gen x liberals who spend a lot of their lives looking at flat screens are the heart of Vaxxist support. I have long suspeted, their only support -- but there just was no way to get any gauge on what the UnWired and UnwWoke throngs would do.

Too early to say that the entire social class of laborers is on board with the truckers, but Trudeau is doing a bangup job of recruiting for them. Much worse than the sneering illogic of his rap is how he looks saying it. What a perfect spokesman for Privilege! Truckers are damned lucky to have the little twit.
