Hey! Good Evening!

US Covid cases surge as vaccine progress slows and Omicron variant sparks fears

Ohio is one of the states that has seen the largest recent increases in hospitalizations due to Covid as the number of cases climbs across the country. There has been 19% increase in hospitalizations over the past two weeks in the United States, according to a New York Times analysis of data. Ohio has a daily average of more than 4,400 people hospitalized due to Covid, which ranks fourth among states and represents a 29% increase over the past two weeks.

While the increased number of people vaccinated against Covid had inspired hopes that Americans would be able to experience a relatively normal winter, the rise in Covid cases; holiday gatherings; and unanswered questions about the Omicron variant have sparked fresh concerns and warnings from doctors and public health officials in the US. ...

Forty percent of the US population has not been fully vaccinated, and the number of doses administered each day has decreased from about 3.3m in April to about 1.7m today, according to the Times.

Ohio is surrounded by states that have also seen a recent surge in Covid cases and hospitalizations. Pennsylvania and Michigan each have a daily average of more than 4,500 patients hospitalized, representing a more than 20% increase over the past two weeks. Illinois and Indiana have seen a 49% increase in hospitalizations.

CDC chief says Omicron is ‘mild’ as early data comes in on US spread of variant

More than 40 people in the US have been found to be infected with the Omicron variant so far, and more than three-quarters of them had been vaccinated, the chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said. But she added nearly all of them were only mildly ill.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, said the data is very limited and the agency is working on a more detailed analysis of what the new mutant form of the coronavirus might hold for the US.

“What we generally know is the more mutations a variant has, the higher level you need your immunity to be … we want to make sure we bolster everybody’s immunity. And that’s really what motivated the decision to expand our guidance,” Walensky said, referencing the recent approval of booster shots for all adults.

She said “the disease is mild” in almost all of the cases seen so far, with reported symptoms mainly cough, congestion and fatigue. One person was hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported, CDC officials said.

Some cases can become increasingly severe as days and weeks pass, and Walensky noted that the data is a very early, first glimpse of US Omicron infections. The earliest onset of symptoms of any of the first 40 or so cases was 15 November, according to the CDC.

Three doses of Pfizer vaccine likely to protect against Omicron infection, tests suggest

Three doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine are likely to protect against infection with the Omicron variant but two doses may not, according to laboratory data that will increase pressure to speed up booster programmes.

Tests using antibodies in blood samples have given some of the first insights into how far Omicron escapes immunity, showing a stark drop-off in the predicted protection against infection or any type of disease for people who have had two doses. The findings suggest that, for Omicron, Pfizer/BioNTech should now be viewed as a “three-dose vaccine”.

The vaccine makers said they would continue “at full speed” with plans to develop an updated Omicron-based vaccine by March 2022 if needed – and their working presumption is that it will be. Separate results, from preliminary studies by the German Centre for Infection Research, also found significant reductions in antibody potency for the Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccines against Omicron.

In the first official briefing from vaccine manufacturers on the likely efficacy of their shots against Omicron, Prof Ugur Sahin, the CEO and co-founder of BioNTech, said on Wednesday: “Individuals who have received two vaccines will most likely not have a significant prevention from infection or any type of disease. We know they will have memory T-cells, which may prevent severe disease.”

He added that the strategy adopted by the UK and others to accelerate booster programmes was “the right way to go”, with an extra dose appearing to compensate for the vaccine being less well matched to Omicron than to earlier Covid strains.

People in counties that voted Trump more likely to die from Covid – study

People in counties that voted for Donald Trump are nearly three times more likely to die from Covid-19 than those who live in counties that voted for Joe Biden, according to a new study by National Public Radio.

NPR examined deaths per 100,000 people in about 3,000 counties across the US since May 2021. According to NPR, 1 May was chosen as the start date as it is roughly the time when vaccines became universally available to adults.

The study found that areas that voted for Trump by at least 60% in November 2020 had death rates 2.7 times higher than counties that voted heavily for Biden.

The study also found that counties that voted for Trump by an even higher percentage had lower vaccination rates and higher Covid-19 death rates.

Charles Gaba, an independent analyst who helped review NPR’s methodology, said that in October, the reddest 10th of the country saw death rates six times higher than the bluest 10th.

As World Confronts Omicron Variant, Top 8 Pfizer & Moderna Investors Make $10 Billion in a Week

Scientists find ‘stealth’ version of Omicron that may be harder to track

Scientists say they have identified a “stealth” version of Omicron that cannot be distinguished from other variants using the PCR tests that public health officials deploy to gain a quick picture of its spread around the world.

The finding came as the number of cases of the original Omicron variant detected in the UK rose by 101 to 437 in a single day and Scotland announced a return to working from home.

The stealth variant has many mutations in common with standard Omicron, but it lacks a particular genetic change that allows lab-based PCR tests to be used as a rough and ready means of flagging up probable cases.

The variant is still detected as coronavirus by all the usual tests, and can be identified as the Omicron variant through genomic testing, but probable cases are not flagged up by routine PCR tests that give quicker results.

Researchers say it is too early to know whether the new form of Omicron will spread in the same way as the standard Omicron variant, but that the “stealthy” version is genetically distinct and so may behave differently.

First US case of Omicron Covid variant identified in California

The first confirmed case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the United States has been identified in California.

The variant was detected in a traveler who had returned from South Africa on 22 November, said Anthony Fauci, Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser.

“We knew it was just a matter of time before the first case of Omicron would be detected in the United States,” Fauci said.

The person, who was fully vaccinated but had not had a booster shot, tested positive on Monday and had mild symptoms that are improving, officials said. The person agreed to remain in quarantine, and all the individual’s close contacts have been reached. They have tested negative.

California reports 2nd omicron case in 2 days

California is reporting its second confirmed case of the omicron COVID variant in as many days.

The Los Angeles County public health department says a county resident is self-isolating after apparently contracting the infection during a trip to South Africa last month. The person’s symptoms are improving without medical care and some people who were in close contact with the traveler have tested negative for the virus and don’t have any symptoms, the department said.

The U.S. recorded its first confirmed omicron infection on Wednesday in a San Francisco resident who had recently traveled to South Africa and developed mild symptoms after returning Nov. 22.

The little-understood variant was first identified a week ago in South Africa and it’s been spreading. Additional cases were reported Thursday in the New York City area, Minnesota, Hawaii and Colorado.

Omicron seems to carry higher Covid reinfection risk, says South Africa

The Omicron variant of Covid-19 appears to be reinfecting people at three times the rate of previous strains, experts in South Africa have said, as public health officials and scientists from around the world closely monitor developments in the country where it was first identified.

As the EU’s public health agency warned that Omicron could cause more than half of all new Covid infections in Europe within the next few months, evidence was emerging, however, that vaccines still appear to offer protection against serious illness.

According to new evidence collected in South Africa by its National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) the latest epidemiological evidence suggests that Omicron can evade immunity from infection with earlier variants and is causing reinfections at three times previous rates. ...

“We believe that previous infection does not provide protection from Omicron,” said Anne von Gottberg, an expert at the NICD. ... She said: “We believe the number of cases will increase exponentially in all provinces of the country. We believe that vaccines will still, however, protect against severe disease. Vaccines have always held out to protect against serious disease, hospitalisations and death.”

Scientists from the same institute have said initial data suggests that Omicron may provoke less severe illness than previous variants although that may be skewed by the fact that many of the first Omicron cases have been identified in younger individuals or detected in very recently screened travellers.

Biden advises ‘concern, not panic’ over Omicron and says no to lockdowns

Joe Biden on Monday said the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus was a “cause for concern, not a cause for panic”, as the US implemented restrictions on travel from South Africa and several other countries. ...

He warned that travel restrictions which took effect on Monday would not prevent the spread of the virus in the US. He also said the ban would give public health officials “time to take more actions, to move quicker, to make sure people understand you have to get your vaccine”.

No cases of the variant have yet been identified in the US. Biden said it was only a matter of time. “Sooner or later, we are going to see new cases of this new variant here in the United States, and we’re going to have to face this new threat, just as we have faced the ones that came before it,” Biden said after meeting his Covid-19 advisers.

Cautioning that there was still much to be learned about the variant, Biden said he was working with vaccine makers to develop “contingency plans” in the “hopefully unlikely” event that updated shots or boosters are needed. ...

Answering questions, Biden said lockdowns were not under consideration. “If people are vaccinated and wear their mask, there’s no need for a lockdown,” Biden said.

Biden’s message to Wall Street: Mass death will not interfere with corporate profits

As the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the “very high” risks posed by the Omicron variant of COVID-19, President Joe Biden appeared on national television Monday to make clear that the US government is opposed to any measures, apart from vaccination, to save lives in response to the new danger.

Biden declared that his administration would not implement “shutdowns or lockdowns,” vowing to “reopen our country ... reopen our businesses” and … “reopen our schools.”

On Friday, US financial markets had their largest one-day selloff of 2021, fueled by concerns that the Omicron variant, which could potentially evade vaccines and pre-existing immunity, would force governments to take emergency measures.

“Friday confirmed for us that COVID is still the investor narrative,” Greg Bassuk, the CEO of AXS Investments told NBC News. “Up until last month or two, we were seeing a lot of strength in the market.” The concerns of Wall Street—and the financial oligarchy—is that the Omicron variant could disrupt its speculative frenzy.

But Biden delivered to Wall Street a clear message: There is no level of mass death that will compel the US government to interrupt the holiday shopping season through life-saving social distancing measures. The market immediately rallied. “The S&P rose by as much as 1.5 percent Monday,” NBC News noted, “as investors seemed to be reassured by President Joe Biden’s remarks.”

Fauci: US could face ‘fifth wave’ of Covid as Omicron variant nears

Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, said on Sunday the US has “the potential to go into a fifth wave” of coronavirus infections amid rising cases and stagnating vaccination rates. He also warned that the newly discovered Omicron variant shows signs of heightened transmissibility.

As Fauci toured the political talkshows, countries around the world including the US scrambled to guard against Omicron, which has stoked fears of vaccine resistance.

On Sunday evening, shortly after the first Omicron cases in North America were confirmed in Canada, the White House said Biden met Fauci and other advisers on returning to Washington from holiday in Nantucket.

Fauci, a statement said, “informed the president that while it will take approximately two more weeks to have more definitive information on the transmissibility, severity, and other characteristics of the variant, he continues to believe that existing vaccines are likely to provide a degree of protection against severe cases of Covid”.

The statement also said those already vaccinated should receive booster shots. Biden would “provide an update about the new variant and the US response on Monday”, the White House said.

Health Justice Advocates Say Vaccine Equity, Not “Racist” Travel Bans, Will Stop the Omicron Variant

'It Was Entirely Avoidable': Rich Countries Blamed as New Covid Variant Sparks Global Alarm

The detection of a new, heavily mutated, and potentially vaccine-resistant coronavirus variant in Botswana and other nations is sending shockwaves worldwide as public health officials rush to understand the strain and its possible impact on the global pandemic response.

For vaccine equity campaigners and epidemiologists, the emergence of another highly contagious coronavirus mutation is far from surprising given the massive inoculation gap between rich and poor countries, which has left billions of people across the globe without access to lifesaving shots—and kept the door open to variants

Botswana, where the new strain was first identified earlier this month, has fully vaccinated just 20% of its population.

Tim Bierley of the U.K.-based advocacy group Global Justice Now said in a statement that the B.1.1.529 mutation is an "entirely avoidable" consequence of deliberate policy decisions by rich countries, which have hoarded vaccine doses and refused to force pharmaceutical giants to share technology with developing nations.

"The U.K. has actively prevented low and middle-income countries from having equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines. We have created the conditions for this variant to emerge," Bierley said, referring to the British government's opposition to a proposed patent waiver for coronavirus vaccines.

"For more than a year, South Africa, Botswana, and most countries have been calling for world leaders to waive intellectual property on coronavirus vaccines, tests, and treatments so they can produce their own jabs," Bierley noted. "It's a vital measure that will be discussed at next week’s World Trade Organization conference. But, so far, the U.K. and E.U. have recklessly blocked it from making progress."

“There have been countless warnings that super-variants could emerge if we do not remove artificial barriers to global vaccination," he continued. "If and when this new variant starts to tear through the world, remember that the British government has led opposition to the plan that could have stopped it.”

Srinivas Murthy, an infectious disease expert, echoed that sentiment.

"Allowing new variants to emerge and spread, 13 months into the vaccine era, is a policy choice by the rich world," he argued.

In marked contrast to their slow-walking of the proposed patent waiver, European countries sprang into action in response to the new variant, moving to impose fresh travel restrictions on visitors from southern Africa as global markets tumbled.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said Friday that the body will "propose, in close coordination with member states, to activate the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region due to the variant of concern B.1.1.529."

"Rich nations are very quick to ban travel but very slow to share vaccines and know-how," said Madhu Pai, Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology and Global Health at McGill University.

Dr. Ayoade Alakija, co-chair of the Africa Vaccine Delivery Alliance, tweeted that the renewed push to cut off travel "was our greatest fear, and [we] were almost prophetic in predicting that the world would eventually shut Africa out having denied us access to vaccines."

At a press conference on Thursday, South African Health Minister Dr. Joe Phaahla said the B.1.1.529 variant—which has thus far been detected in Botswana, South Africa, and Hong Kong—may have been behind recent coronavirus outbreaks in the small South African province of Gauteng. (Update: The first case of the B.1.1.529 variant in Europe was identified in Belgium on Friday.)

"Rest assured that as people move in the next coming weeks, this [variant] will be all over," he warned.

Professor Tulio de Oliveira, a renowned bioinformatician, told the media that in the B.1.1.529 variant, "what we see is this very unusual constellation of mutations."

"This is concerning," he said, "for predicted immune evasion and transmissibility."

As Nature reported, "The variant stood out because it contains more than 30 changes to the spike protein—the SARS-CoV-2 protein that recognizes host cells and is the main target of the body's immune responses."

"Many of the changes have been found in variants such as Delta and Alpha and are linked to heightened infectivity and the ability to evade infection-blocking antibodies," the outlet noted.

we are encouraging more vaxing if the new variant's symptom is like a short term mild cold. Obviously more profits for pfizer, etc. We know natural immunity is much more effective than vaxing, so it seems to me we should be welcoming this new "moronic" variant.

Anyone see it differently?

Here is the link:
Chris Martenson with Zuby

Chris asked him in his recent travels around the US if he could describe the regional differences or the political differences as far as those living in fear versus those living in relative freedom. He would not answer at this point. Later he did make comments about the more right leaning being more reluctant to go along with the agenda and the liberal leaning more willing to go along and to be very concerned about the unboosted.

I could understand his reluctance but also am disappointed.

to die of Covid is a bunch of B.S. Many of these counties are rural and do not have adequate health care to begin with. When I was working with the elderly several years ago, many of my clients had never even had health insurance until they qualified for Medicare at age 65. Without at least comparing the numbers of medical facilities, doctors, and insurance to the population, this article is proving the results it wants.

Even though the vaccines are free, one of the reasons I did not get vaccinated is that I could not find one. All of the drug stores would have signs saying, "walk-ins welcome." But when you tried to get one, you were told that you had to make an appointment and come back and that maybe they would have some next week. As I live 20 plus miles outside of town, I just waited. And then finally contracted Covid so now I'm not worried about it for at least six months.

is much more protective than the vaccine. An Israeli study suggests 25 times better than vaccination. So I bet you won't have any problems with it. Some Doctors are saying a booster jab after infection will actually lower your immune response.

I think we will all be exposed to the new variant in the next few weeks if we have not already. I think we may be in luck that it will drive immunity with few to mild symptoms.

In yesterday’s Covid video #9 Malone said that Israel’s agreement with Pfizer stipulated that adverse effects could not be disclosed. To this date Israel’s government has not mentioned them, but scientists with a conscience have been the ones telling us about them. But it should never have been agreed upon unless you are complicit in the cover up. The US government has made the same decision to cover up the deadly adverse reactions people are having. We are entitled to informed consent, but it’s being denied us. It’s against the Nuremberg code and federal law according to Malone. Informed consent is full disclosure of risks. Full and free acceptance of the risks.

The justice department has said that the FDA is an HHS agency (health and human services) that regulates clinical investigations of products under its jurisdiction such as drugs, biological products and medical devices. FDA is not considered a Common Rule agency because its regulations differ from the Common Rule. However, FDA is required to harmonize with the Common Rule whenever permitted by law.

Malone: it's the bioethics that apply to western culture and has been in effect since WW2. The ground has fallen away and I don’t know what the rules are because they are whatever they want them to be. The ends justify the means.

Informed consent? Nope.

Honest answers from CDC/FDA? Nope, ‘noble’ lies are encouraged, and fact checking of the fact checkers is censored.

“Vaccines” that actually prevent disease? Nope, multiple mandatory doses of gene therapies that don’t work.

Public disclosure of complete trials safety data? Nope, unless you can wait 55 75! years for it.

Physicians allowed to prescribe off label FDA approved drugs for early treatment of COVID? Nope, we’ll threaten them and take away their livelihood if they try.

FDA doing its job, regulating and ensuring safety of new medications? Nope, regulators partnering with (and profiting from) the push for new EUA drugs with inadequate safety data on possible side effects and long term risks.

None of this should be tolerated, permitted or legal, but it’s what we now have. Regulatory capture is complete.

We have a National health care system in complete disarray. Functionally it seems more like a depopulation program than health care. Josef Mengele would be proud of us.

[edit: Pfizer has recently requested EVEN MORE time to complete full disclosure of trials data]

The Guardian’s Alarming Recent Record of Propaganda, Misinformation and Slander

As has often happened to progressive-minded people who’ve reached a more radical point in their political evolutions, I’ve become disillusioned with many organizations, leaders and media sources that I used to rely on. One of these dubious sources is The Guardian.

At first, it seemed to me like The Guardian is a good alternative to the American mainstream media outlets. It’s often featured quality articles about subjects like climate change, and its columnist George Monbiot is the one who first taught me what the term “neoliberal” means. But this good material is what gives a feel of reliability to the misleading claims that The Guardian very often puts out.
...
But I’m not basing my overall judgement of The Guardian off of the behavior of just one of their columnists, nor off of the fact that I don’t always agree with what The Guardian publishes. The paper has not just featured material that’s biased towards Western pro-imperialist narratives, but has repeatedly featured material that uses dishonest framing or even outright misinformation in order to argue for those narratives.
...
When The Guardian has recently carried out these many journalistic offenses, and when it has yet to walk back on them, the factual reporting that it does should not make us see it as a reliable source. Its mix of truth and falsehoods essentially puts it on the same journalistic level as Alex Jones’ InfoWars, which also reports some facts but is nonetheless distrusted because of the dangerous disinformation that it frequently puts out. It may be time to start treating these two outlets with the same amount of caution.

The Wellcome Trust & COVID-19: What You’re Not Being Told
