Democrats weaken the already horribly weak bill they passed

With Many Lawmakers Out of Town, Democratic House Quietly Weakens Paid Leave Provisions in Coronavirus Relief Bill

The Democrat-led House of Representatives on Monday quietly weakened paid leave provisions in a coronavirus relief bill that was already facing criticism from progressives for excluding 80 percent of the U.S. private-sector workforce.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday morning that "Democratic aides were alarmed by the changes, which were passed with no objections because House lawmakers are away from Washington [on recess]. The changes weren't shown to most lawmakers before the vote."

The new version of the bill, according to the Journal, "would still provide two weeks of sick leave to a wide swath of workers affected by the pandemic, including those who are in quarantine, caring for family members with COVID-19, and those who have children whose schools or day-care centers have closed."

"But for the next 10 weeks," the Journal noted, "paid leave would be limited only to workers caring for a child whose school or day care had been shut. Healthcare providers and emergency responders, as well as workers who had been in quarantine or caring for a family member affected by the virus, wouldn't be eligible for the additional 10 weeks of leave."

"Democrats are scaling back the paid sick leave bill that already left out 80% of workers," tweeted Max Berger, co-founder of progressive Jewish advocacy group IfNotNow. "Instead of proposing solutions as big as the crisis, it looks like they're still playing small ball."

Well done, Democrats. Now hurry and pass some bills that will give the airlines billions of dollars as well as the other industries even after they got a huge tax cut and instead of it going to help workers they bought back their own stocks.

The Trump administration is working on a $750 billion bill to bailout industries including airline.

The Trump administration is discussing a stimulus package with the Senate today which includes $50 billion for the airline industry, following demands from an industry trade group.

As the Trump administration signaled that it would take measures to support the airline industry as the coronavirus pandemic led to international flight restrictions and a slowdown in bookings, the union representing flight attendants called on Congress to ensure airline workers—not executives and shareholder profits—are at the center of the effort to shore up the industry.

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, released a video on social media early Tuesday morning calling on lawmakers to prioritize the interests of working people in the industry as Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin prepared to meet with Senate Republicans to discuss an $850 billion economic stimulus package, which is set to include $50 billion for the airlines.

The industry stimulus was included following a request for $58 billion in aid from the trade group Airlines for America, but Nelson implored Congress to include direct support for flight attendants, pilots, and other workers in their plan to help keep airline companies afloat during the pandemic.

In other news people are demanding that Bernie drop out and the hell with letting the rest of the country vote on who they want as president. I agree. Let's get on with the coronation already since it looks like the numbers have already shown Biden won. Yippee for democracy huh?

One day, we'll look back and talk about the coronavirus being the largest transfer of wealth from the working class to the top 1%. By the time they soak all of us to save the corporate uppercrust, it'll make what they did to us in 2008 look like child's play.

I'll never vote for another Corporate Democrat again. Period.

This is going to be the shock doctrine or disaster capitalism on steroids. And Trump is working with Mnuchin to do a payroll tax cut that will do nothing for people who are not receiving a paycheck, but it will weaken social security. Gee what are the chances that stays in effect after the crisis is over?

Hold on folks this is going to get ugly because congress has their man in place and will get a lot of their wet dreams passed.

The airlines, cruise ships, casinos, etc. will probably all get bailed out, while the working class of those industries gets the shaft. Wonder how much the Titans of Wall Street will get in this bailout/grift? The Fed has already dropped rates to zero. That silver bullet is shot. There's plenty of misery coming, but those poor billionaires need relief. Sheesh.

and of course big business has it's effing hand out!!

In a letter to Trump and congressional leaders, the Chamber of Commerce called for legislation including a three-month cancellation of the taxes companies pay to support Social Security, Medicare and unemployment insurance.

"No family and no business should go bankrupt just because of the temporary disruption in income caused by the coronavirus," said the chamber's CEO, Thomas J. Donohue.

No unemployment insurance you asswipe? You are the ones who should be the last in line for a cut to that because people are going to need to rely on it. It is insane what these grifters are going to line up to get while not giving a tinker's damn about what happens to their workers.

Amazon says it is paying people $2 more over their base pay and up to 2 weeks of sick leave which is good, but people are still supposed to stay home for 2 weeks after their symptoms pass.

Bigger than the 2008 bank bailout or the 2009 recovery act, the White House proposal aims to provide relief for small businesses, $50 billion for the airline industry and include a massive tax cut for wage-earners.

Here is what Schumer says:

“We will need big, bold, urgent federal action to deal with this crisis,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday in announcing Democrats' plan.

Schumer will meet with Senate Democrats on a conference call to outline their proposal.

Oh don't even try to fool us, Chuck. After seeing the turd Nancy has already laid I don't think even a fraction of those billions is going to go to helping us. Let me guess...the hospital industry will see a major bailout while its workers get squat. Same with the drug companies. There is a reason they give you big bucks, Chuck, and it is not to help us.

From the comments:

Let's bailout those corporations yet again! This isn't Capitalism, this is corporate welfare...

Yep. Just like Bernie said on air in one of the debates. But sure let's just cancel the rest of the primary so that people won't look at Bernie and think that yes indeed he is what we need.

cruise-taking old folks have died off. And after the economic devastation of the pandemic gets done, one cruise ship might be sufficient for those survivors who could afford such luxuries.
