Dell EMC settles in transgender discrimination complaint

On the labor front...

Dell EMC2 has agreed to pay $60,000 to a transgender former intern in order to settle claims that she faced sex and gender identity-based discrimination while working at the company.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced that Hopkinton-based company will also pay $25,000 to each of two nonprofit organizations and will now submit all of its diversity and inclusion policies to the civil rights division of the AG's office.

Additionally, there will be anti-discrimination training.

Dell EMC2 is a result of a $58 billion merger in 2016.

The former intern did not file a formal legal complaint against Dell EMC2, but Healey investigated her claims and announced the settlement Friday.

The announcement of the settlement does not go into detail about the woman's claims, but says she "was subjected to a hostile work environment based on both her sex and gender identity, denied job opportunities, and was then retaliated against for complaining of discrimination."

Transgender people continue to face significant and unique barriers in finding and maintaining employment. This case is a reminder that all employers, even those who are leaders in matters of diversity and inclusion, must be proactive about identifying and eliminating discrimination. We appreciate Dell EMC2’s efforts to successfully resolve this issue.

--Healy

When we learned that a former intern had raised complaints of unfair treatment during her internship with Dell EMC2, we were very concerned and took appropriate action. While Dell EMC2 believes that no unlawful conduct occurred and denies any wrongdoing, we have agreed to resolve this isolated incident on terms acceptable to all parties and with a financial contribution to support the continuing advancement of LGBTQ and women’s issues.
