The Convention When Dems Are United? Or the One When Dems Are Untied?

Don't you love it when you stumble across a read where the author is so thoroughly on your own wavelength that you feel comforted in knowing that, in fact, you are not alone and that other sentient beings are reacting to the same stimuli you are responding to in exactly the same way and drawing the same conclusions?

So it was when I read the excellent commentary by Caitlin Johnstone in The Inquisitor, The DNC Is Playing Chicken With Progressives

Johnstone's thesis is that once again, Progressives find themselves in a dominance stare-down with the Democratic Party PTB.

The DNC has not backed down one inch from its path. From the announcement of Wall Street crony Tim Kaine as Hillary’s running mate before the email scandal, to Sanders delegates being locked out of the room for the vote on superdelegates just after, to adding Wasserman Schultz to Clinton’s campaign after her unabashed flaunting of the Democratic Charter, they continue to stare progressive voters right in the eye, fully confident that a Trump scare campaign will be enough to make them turn and chicken out, and go back to obedient slavery.

It's that same old deja view all over again isn't it? Haven't liberals been in this same place oh so many times before? Haven't we always had to bow back down before the status quo because the monster behind the other door was simply too scary to contemplate? Haven't we always slunk back to the rear of the herd with the assertion, "Just you wait, next time it will be different!"

We promise ourselves that this will be the last time we vote for the lesser evil, that next time, when the Republicans mount a moderate, sane, Republican that offers only equal evil, we will finally break from the ranks and exercise our individual right not to vote for the Democrat. We will put our hands our our ears and sing "La, la, la, la" when they trot out as reliably as Auld Lang Syne on New Years Eve, "Supreme Court, Supreme Court, Supreme Court."

But as Johnstone points out, there is one salient, critical difference this time around. For the first time, the Democrats couldn't even be bothered to pretend that they cared about or needed the primary voters at all. They pre-selected the candidate, did everything they possibly could to weight the election in their favor, and deployed all manner of unsavory and disgusting election tactics to achieve their pre-ordained end.

The Democrats and their candidate have proven by word and action, both overt and covert, that liberals don't really matter, progressive goals get lip-service, and they are just sorry that they have to go through with this stupid charade every four years. Once the renegade Sanders voters are once again successfully rounded up and branded with the giant LE (lesser evil) on their hindquarters, then they are off to hunt the really valuable (to them) demographic- moderate "swing" voters, the polling equivalent of Kobi beef to the power elites of the Democrats, the swath of the electorate they have always hankered for and just never been able to get on the plate. And so begins the pander, the triangulating, and the parsing of the stands they were forced to assume for the primary.

The Democrats get away with this BS every election cycle because we let them get away with it. We often refer to the kabuki played out by our legislators, but we fail to address our own role in this ritual theater. The Democrats behave the way they do to their liberal adherents because we have proven to them time and time again that it works. Why should they ever abandon such a successful strategy? As voters we have demonstrated our own inadequacies by holding our breaths and turning blue on a schedule as predictable as a tide table and then trudging off obediently to the polls to thwart the Republican bogeyman.

At some point we have to be honest with ourselves. The Republicans will always offer up a candidate who is anathema to our common goals and shared values. The Supreme Court will always have vacancies to fill.

Since the introduction of the DLC, Third Way types into dominance in the leadership of the Democratic Party, the party has behaved in a manner that shows they believe progressive voters have no power, or more importantly, no power we are willing to use in a constructive manner .

When we sit out elections as happened in 2010, we empower our opposition and place ourselves at an even greater disadvantage. Worse, we strengthen the party overlords' argument of "see, what happens when all the bad little Democrats stay home?" or even more horrible, give credence to theories that the country is growing more centrist when in fact the opposite is happening among the great unwashed - we are growing more frustrated, more impatient for tangible results and more politically left.

According to Johnstone's great article, the culmination of this primary was that despite all the conniving and manipulations, there was a great breakthrough, the formerly powerless and impotent group of disgruntled peasants managed to breach the moats and climb the walls and make enough of a nuisance of themselves that attention had to be paid. Based on the evidence of this primary, it looks like the 99% have finally developed enough critical mass at the polls to make the argument that the time for an effective third party has finally arrived. Her conclusion, which I share is:

Progressives can stare right back at the DNC and refuse to be scared into turning. What have we got to lose at this point? The Democratic party has already proven that it’s evolve-or-die time for its life as a major political party. Finally, the slave gets to choose. Do we make them evolve? Or do we kill them off forever with a new progressive party? Two delicious prospects.

It looks as though the leader who was instrumental in storming the barricades, Bernie Sanders, has chosen the evolution route, although that remains to be verified. IMO the Democratic Party has acted in poor faith and has deservedly alienated permanently a large percentage of their voters they professed to represent. I count myself among that group. My personal decision will be to vote for Jill Stein and to for once not to be stared down into acquiescence and compliance to a Party that has not served me well for quite a number of years now. IMO it's well past time for them to reap the harvest they have sown.

JULIAN ASSANGE:

Well, you’re asking me, do I prefer cholera or gonorrhea? Personally, I would prefer neither. Look, I think—you know, we know how politics works in the United States. Whoever—whatever political party gets into government is going to merge with the bureaucracy pretty damn fast. It will be in a position where it has some levers in its hand. And so, as a result, corporate lobbyists will move in to help control those levers. So it doesn’t make much difference in the end. What does make a difference is political accountability, a general deterrence set to stop political organizations behaving in a corrupt manner. That can make a difference, because that changes the perception of what you can do or not do. And so, always—well, almost always, you should choose the principled position, which is to set a disciplinary signal about acting in a corrupt way, and take a philosophical position, which is our institutions can only be as good as our understanding of our institutions.

Normally, I agree 100% with what you say. This time, I agree with you 150%. Smile I seriously heart the way you write.

"It's well past time to reap the harvest they have sown." Yes, it is well past time for the Democratic National Committee to feel the wrath of justice at the hands of a large part of their former base. I will be doing the #DemExit the day after the convention, Friday, with thousands of other newly-minted former Democrats. I'm weirdly excited about it. When the DNC realizes how many voters they lost, they are going to completely lose their shit.

Hell no, DNC, we won't vote for Hillary!

So I guess now, WikiLeaks has released emails that show the DNC actually rewarding high-dollar donors with potential appointments to federal government positions, presumably within the Clinton administration. It's actually in the form of a goddamned spreadsheet, no less! That is motherfucking ILLEGAL and those who plotted this (Jordan Kaplan, in particular) should be ARRESTED immediately.

Y'all realize that it's gonna get worse everyday this week, right? WikiLeaks will save the best for last and, by then, Bernie will already have released his delegates to Hillary and the convention will be all but over. It's going to be a shitshow of epic proportions, methinks.

I have two good friends at the convention in Philly this week (both Bernie delegates, of course), and one of 'em posted to her Facebook page this morning: a picture of Kermit on a bicycle with the caption "Well, I'm off to the DNC to go fuck shit up!" I'm so proud of her. Blum 3

with his promise of no personal attacks which I believe he meant sincerely since that was his longtime Vermont practice. I think he had no idea the kind of vitriol he was going to unleash by not kissing the coronation ring.

But, he could have used Hillary's email server issue to further his run from the getgo on a non-personal basis - that the practice of using it subverted goals of transparency, accountability, and federal record keeping requirements and that he would be against any person subject to the FOIA trying to do an end run around it - that's discussing policy not a personal attack. That would have been a lot better in the first debate than "America is tired of hearing about your damn emails!" when it was a pressing and important issue to many Democratic voters before the National Security issues ever raised their head.

I agree that Bernie has a good moral compass and it's possible he still has a few surprises up his sleeve. Some of the stuff coming out now shows he definitely laid down in a dog bed with a lot of fleas when he pledged to promote Party unity.

Bernie provided contrast by avoiding personal attacks, which are anyway beneath him. That made the corporate/Clinton surrogate attacks over invented/misrepresented things stand out as extra-scummy. As they are, no matter which 'side' of the two-wing scam splatters them.

His resolutely sticking to the issues important to the American people and to the survival of life on the planet and tossing all else aside kept these essential issues from being side-tracked in (too-rare) debate and (too-rare) media interviews, bringing them to public attention and forcing the corporate/Clinton campaign to at least try to fake sorta-concern for at least some things/some sections of the American people at least some of the time in front of at least some audiences, incidentally widely displaying their propensities for lying, callousness, hypocrisy and the actual allegiance to Big Money interests, Hillary even - in a public debate - citing Bush Admin abuses as precedent for her own. That's not 'tone-deaf' - that's being corrupt to the point where her associates and world-view regard(s) this as being acceptable.

Politics ought to be focused on the public good by the public servants the public pays - not focused on draining the public their offices exist to serve of their livelihoods and very lives, as well as the environment consisting of life itself - all evolving together over billions of years, and which together mutually supports life itself in a now-for-profit-shredded and failing cycle - in support of the plans of a crazed relative few eager to destroy it all in order to 'have it all' to themselves.

She reports that his speech indicates that Bernie is ready to be a peacemaker; that he will make the case 'why' we must vote for FSC; that he will thank his activists for their support; but, that he will make clear that he seeks to unify--and get FSC elected.

I'll post a link of his transcript, as soon as I can find it.

(It's interesting, before his speech was made available to the Press just a few minutes ago, some reporters thought that he might temper his support of FSC. Apparently, he held off to the last minute, before he made the transcript available even to FSC's Campaign.)

Now the speculation is whether or not his delegate's will disrupt the Convention this evening, or even walk out.

Thanks for the excellent essay!

would be shocked if he does do.

(I hope that I'm wrong. Maybe he's given the Press and Campaign a bogus speech, just to shut them down.)

My 'guess' is that he held off releasing his remarks until he addressed a rally that was held midday.

(I heard him speaking roughly 3 hours ago, which according to MSNBC, was him addressing his delegates/supporters.)

While I definitely do not agree with some of his actions, lately, I understand them.

BTW, in the end, his delegates have ruled out bringing a 'minority report' to the floor of the Convention--or, having a floor fight over the issue of getting rid/limiting the number of superdelegates.

So, I really don't look for them to do any very radical this evening.

I probably won't listen to all of the speeches this evening. For sure, Bernie's. Maybe Warren's--although she is slated to be the chief Hillbot from what I've read.

We'll tune in off-and-on this afternoon and tonight, of course. Sounds like a choir's on now. I have a feeling this is going to be an oddball convention--more like a Republican one, except that it will have a heavy dose of identity politics.

*Sigh*

Have a good one!

Your narrative is spot on, Phoebe. It's time for the people to truly say enough is enough.

Bernie drilled his platform into us. He now has to go back to being a senator. WE must go on being Bernie. We must declare that the revolution is real, it IS going to be televised, and it's here to stay. We must not be shamed into fear-voting.

If we do not take this opportunity to change the trajectory of our politics, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

If not now, when?

Life is strong. I'm weak, but Life is strong.

The following look at some of the poll results comes from poster Vraye_Foi at the Reddit site r/Kossacks_for_Sanders. The poll itself is long and worth a further look, if you’re so inclined. My thanks for this summary of just a a few of its findings (my emphasis except where noted):

Pages 12 and 13 of the report [the “enthusiasm” pages] are full of interesting data, some of which I’ll highlight –

25% of Democrats are either Dissatisfied or Upset [Clinton] is the Democrat candidate for President

62% of Independents are either Dissatisfied or Upset that she is the Democrat candidate for President

43% of those polled across the board (includes all demographics and party affiliations) are “Upset” that she is the Democrat candidate for President

When it comes to Independents’ view of Donald Trump, only 44% are Dissatisfied or Upset that he is the Republican nominee.

Enthusiastic Support for Trump within his party is at 51%. Hillary’s Enthusiastic support within her party: 34%.

The choices for this question are: Enthusiastic, Satisfied, Dissatisfied, Upset, Not Sure. The wording of the most extreme categories is Enthusiastic and Upset. So Trump starts the pre-convention head-to-head campaigning with more enthusiasm within his party and also with independents than Clinton does, by a lot if the poll is right.

When looking at support among women:

And continuing on the theme of “Enthusiastic Support”, how about this surprise:

18% of female respondents are Enthusiastic for Trump

19% of female respondents are Enthusiastic for Clinton

So just an aside and speaking as a woman here, can the HRC campaign cut the propaganda bout how it’s sexist if you don’t support or vote for Hillary? Please? Because this poll shows that women are about as enthusiastic and thrilled about Hillary as they are about Trump. …

On the negative side, when it comes to Hillary being the Democrats’ candidate, 12% of the women polled feel “Dissatisfied but not Upset” and 42% are UPSET.
