Confused Christian staff members dismissed from Texas Learning Center

There is a six-year-old boy in Katy, TX who is transgender. His parents, who happen to be a gay couple, informed the Children's Lighthouse Learning Center that their child now should be referred to as a boy and disclosed his new name.

The school administrators were okay with that. Indeed, they appear to have been prepared for their first transgender child. A set of guidelines entitled How to Handle Transgender Students was distributed to staff members.

Two "Christian" staff members objected. They were fired.

As you might imagine, this has caused an uproar from certain sources.

Surprisingly, it appears that local Fox affiliates are not required to have anti-transgender medical and psychological "experts" whenever a story involving transgender issues arises.

I think there’s a strong indication that a lot of this is biological.

It is possible that they will have some type of awareness that the gender that they are currently in just doesn't fit for them.

At the time I was six, I began to exhibit all female personality traits.

Clearly the daycare owner in this situation felt that this child's parents were advocating on his behalf appropriately.

A six year old isn’t thinking about sex, but a six-year old certainly thinks about who they are.

--Nikki Araguz Lloyd, Transgender National Alliance

The two gay men who are the parents are, of course, being attacked for accepting and supporting their child.

I commend these parents for being courageous.

I understand the fears that [people] have. But I want to tell you, in my clinical experience working with same sex partners, because I do a lot of work with foster-hood and adoption, I think these families are very well adjusted. I think they are even sometimes more psychologically mindful, or even more aware of, making sure their child is brought up in a healthy environment, with good self-esteem and a good feeling about themselves.

--Dr. Brams

One of the workers, who were fired for disrespecting the child and her parents, was Christian author Madeline Kirksey (In Pursuit of the Promise).

Kirksey said she did not believe that the other children should be exposed to a transgender person at their age and that she felt that the two male parents were imposing the issue on their child.

I don’t think we should be talking to other people’s children who are under the age of 18 about being transgender.

--Kirksey

Kirksey notified Child Protective Services that the little girl was being told that she is now a little boy. She believes that it is up to professionals to determine if the little girl is just confused, or if the new gender is being forced upon the little girl.

The dismissed workers are claiming they were being fired because of their religious belief.

It's very sad that what has become a personal private matter in relation to a transgender person, is now again a very public discussion.
