Everyone who is voting for Hillary, who ever thought about voting for Hillary, needs to watch every minute of this video. Do not lazily indulge yourself by skipping ahead.

...... was a decent, civic-minded Angelena, attempting to protect part of her city from a mob of vandals. This remains true regardless of what you think of the Trump Presidential candidacy. The fact remains that one Angelena stood between a known and famous feature of Los Angeles and a gang of vandals wanting to inflict damage upon it.
And where the fuck was LAPD while all this crap was going down?

I've been leaning towards Ecuador, but spending 6 months
in Malaysia and then another 6 in Da Nang in Vietnam sounds like a good plan for the short term too.

After cruising around for 45k miles for the better part of 16 years, I've been living aboard Reflections for 3 years now in SE Asia. If you're serious about heading this way, I can provide you with lots of info on how to live in this area. PM me and I'll answer any questions you might have.
You have the right idea! You don't want to "move" anywhere. You want to hop around from place to place and find if you find a place you really want to settle down in, then start making those plans. We have some friends who put their boat on the hard for bottom paint and repairs and decided they wanted a couple a months off the boat. They just rented a 2 bedroom furnished apartment in Penang, Malaysia that includes, pool, gym and all the other amenities for RM1200/month. That's less than $300USD/mo! Penange is a fantastic city and would be a great place to start your adventure. It has a large population of Chinese and the history, architecture reflect it. Eating out is rediculously cheap and you can easily get around Penang without a car. US citizens get a 3 month Visa on arrival in Malaysia and all you need to do to renew it is step outside the country, get your passport stamped and you can re-enter for the next 3 months.
We spent a month travelling throughout Vietnam last year and loved it! We didn't spend any time in Da Nang but just south of Da Nang is the town of Hoi An. It was one of favorite places in Vietnam. It's a much smaller quaint town with lots of Aussie and other expats and is on a river that easily leads to the ocean and beautiful beaches. I'm not sure about what is necessary for long term stays in Vietnam. We obtained 30 day visas before arrival, but there are lots of Americans living in Vietnam. We are going to investigate long term rules ourselves as we can see living in Vietnam. The food in Vietnam is exquisite! The French were there for decades and anywhere the French have been they leave behind their love of food. Another of our favorite place was the town of Sapa, in the north near Hanoi. It's in the mountains and they even get snow a couple times a year. It is absolutely beautiful and the cool climate is a welcome reprieve from living at sea level in the tropics.
Knowing you're a boating person, I don't believe there is a better place in the world to purchase a boat. A lot of round the world cruises end here. Many don't want to cross the Indian ocean, others fall in love the with area and never want to leave. There are lots of boats for sale here and I'm often stunned by how cheaply a person can buy a fully equipped cruising boat. It's definitely not the place to sell one!! Malaysia allows foreign yachts to remain indefinitely in the country. You have to get out every 3 months, but your boat is welcome to stay forever! Foreigners can also register boats in Malaysia for an annual fee of about $100USD. Thailand is a little more restrictive. You get 30 day Visa on arrival or can apply for a 2 month Visa before hand that is extendable for another month. Your boat can stay for 6 months or longer if you get a note from a marina that work is being done on it.
We don't think this area is great from a cruising point of view, but for inexpensive travel, accommodations and food, it can't be beat. Airfare is so cheap here it's almost unbelievable. We recently flew to Penang from Langkawi, about a 35 minute flight, for RM39.00. That's less than $10USD! The 3 hour ferry ride cost twice that amount and the taxi to the airport here cost us RM20.00!
I think the best way to experience this place is to plan to move on every 3 to 6 months. Take what you need in a backpack and rent as you go. Hop around from Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia and then repeat.

Starting to think maybe I should have married you.
My wife has a lot of "Sand in her shoes" and isn't very warm to the idea of a long term departure from the states as of yet, but I am still working it.
I am hoping that after a year or two in her new RN position I can at least talk her into giving it a go for 5 or 6 months.
If we went during the high season here we could easily rent our home out for 4 or 5 of those months for around 3k a month, which in and of itself could cover our trip and expenses and that is after factoring in taxes, mortgage and insurance.
Hell, we would actually probably end a vacation with more money then when it started, something I didn't think was even possible until I started investigating SE Asia for a "Vacation".
As far as stays go, Vietnam grants a 6 month visa, but you can also get an extended one for retiree's
I was interested in Da Nang because a friend of mine was telling me about how little he and his wife spend there a month on everything, including housekeeper and grounds keeper and it sounded like a very affordable way for someone living on a very meager pension to live a life significantly better than I can afford here.
Couple that with the fact that no matter who wins in November we all lose and I am rapidly becoming less and less enamored with my nation...

headed to Cambodia this year. I haven't visited Nam and Malaysia, but have visited Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, with Cambodia being my favorite of the bunch.
I am not a beach/boat person. Chile would not suit you, but you would love Brazil.
Chile does have earthquakes, but their crime rate is virtually nothing, weather is great, cost of living is low.
One of my fellow travelers is retiring to Columbia. He says it is full of retired military peeps.
