Climate Help in the 2030s?

The "Little Ice Age" and its included climactic minima is often partially attributed to an extreme solar minimum. In particular,

During the period 1645--1715, in the middle of the Little Ice Age, there was a period of low solar activity known as the Maunder Minimum. The Spörer Minimum has also been identified with a significant cooling period between 1460 and 1550.[69] Other indicators of low solar activity during this period are levels of the isotopes carbon-14 and beryllium-10.[70]

Little Ice Age

Now, a new model of solar behavior which is producing shockingly accurate predictions with respect to the sun's 11 year activity cycle predicts an extreme decrease in solar activity during the 2030s.

Solar activity predicted to fall 60% in 2030s, to 'mini ice age' levels: Sun driven by double dynamo -- ScienceDaily

continued below the break

Less incoming solar radiation equals less heating of the earth and its oceans, hence a period of cooling. The greenhouse effect really changes none of that, except that the effect both amplifies and prolongs the heating caused by incident solar radiation. (The radiative cooling of the Little Ice Age might today only result in a decrease in the rate of heat gain instead of actual net cooling.) The new model, which involves adding a second "dynamo" to the existing model, suggests a 60% decrease in solar activity during the 2030s. The discoverers are predicting another "Maunder minimum" which, should it happen, just might give us a little breathing room, which we will probably desperately need by then.

As you divest from carbon, you might wish to invest a small portion of the proceeds in woolies and sweats. The way things are going, I can't help but hope that they are correct. One way or another, we shall know relatively soon.

For all the parts of the globe that need to cool off, that is great news. For those of us that are struggling to achieve summer temperatures and a winter that doesn't rival the artic, that is bad news. Or to make lemon out of lemonade, maybe that will correct the jet stream and put all of that cold air back where it belongs. Lol, like I'm actually going to be here in 2030.

I know it is possible, but will I even know which season year it is?

Some of our recent brutal winters have been blamed on an extended reach of the arctic polar vortex because the arctic had been warmed. So if it's recooled I assume its reach would retract again. So in spots that have been abnormally cold lately, winter might get warmer. We can hope!

Now, I'll just be grateful if we aren't the new North Pole.

This week the highs in my home town of Tallahassee are hovering near 100*. I may have to make a trip there next week and I am dreading it if I do. At least we are only in the low to mid 80's here in western NC.
