Bred to Suffer: Glenn Greenwald on the “Morally Unconscionable” U.S. Industry of Dog Experimentation
STORY MAY 30, 2018

Animal experimentation is on the rise in the United States. The Department of Agriculture reports that nearly 61,000 dogs were used in the U.S. for experimentation in 2016 alone, and the total reported number of animals used for experimentation was more than 820,000. A major new investigation by The Intercept examines the poorly regulated and highly profitable industry of breeding dogs for the sole purpose of experimenting on them in the U.S. The investigation reveals the horrors of the dog experimentation industry at one of the three largest firms in the U.S. that sells beagles to research labs: Ridglan Farms. We speak with The Intercept’s Glenn Greenwald in Rio de Janeiro to discuss his in-depth investigation, headlined “Bred to Suffer: Inside the Barbaric U.S. Industry of Dog Experimentation.”

In one experiment, young dogs were injected with megadoses of an opioid. They became lethargic and refused to eat. In another experiment, a drill was used to bore holes into the skulls of 30 docs so that distemper virus could be injected into their brains. Some dogs whimpered during the painful procedure, indicating that they were not properly anesthetized. A senior worker said that one of the dogs repeatedly banged her head on the cage floor, and others foamed at the mouth or had seizures.

In an experiment sponsored by Intervet, a subsidiary of Merck, workers injected an insecticide into dogs. Liberty’s clients include Merial, Bayer, Merck, the USDA, Michigan State University and the universities of Pittsburgh, Florida and Louisville, among others.

How do some people even look in a mirror?

The ONLY information that can possibly be derived from these experiments is that some things are poison. The article states these experiments can’t provide any useful information on how the human body reacts to different chemicals. And the effects are different in dogs. The results are basically useless in the vast majority of these experiments.

Let’s take one example of what that means. I’m going to use chocolate as my example. Humans love chocolate. Chocolate tastes good. Chocolate can affect out moods, Chocolate is one of our favorite things.

Here’s What You Need to Know About the Health Benefits of Chocolate

Chocolate is not only delicious, it has surprising health benefits, especially if the concentration of cocoa is 70 percent or higher.

What to Do if Your Dog Eats Chocolate

Although a few Hersey kisses are unlikely to affect a medium-sized dog, if you know your dog has eaten chocolate, it’s important to monitor him for signs of toxicity (see below), and it’s recommended that you contact your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline (855-213-6680, fee applies) for advice.

What are the Signs of Chocolate Poisoning?
Signs of chocolate poisoning usually appear within 6 to 12 hours after your dog has eaten it, may last up to 72 hours, and include the following:

Vomiting
Diarrhea
Restlessness
Increased urination
Tremors
Elevated or abnormal heart rate
Seizures
Collapse and death

I am sorry, but right now I’d like to put a certain bunch of humans in a cage and see how they like it.

There is very little that can be called ‘humane’ in the human race. We abuse and kill everything from the land we walk on, the water our lives depends on, the atmosphere we pollute out of greed and ignorance, the animals that give our lives so much beauty, and each other.

Mark Twain said it best:

It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.

Modern education is little more than toeing the line for the capitalist pigs.

Guerrilla Liberalism won't liberate the US or the world from the iron fist of capital.

Cows, pigs and chickens are animals as well and are bred to be slaughtered and eaten. For anyone wanting to take the time to do a little investigating they will find that the slaughter of these animals by factory slaughter houses is extremely brutal and inhumane. So cutting back on meat consumption or stopping completely will do a lot to stop the suffering of other living creatures. Not to mention what raising all this livestock is doing to the land, water and climate.

Haven't read his piece yet on dog experimentation (and not sure I have the stomach for it).

He's been doing some other work on animal cruelty, with regard to the food industry also. It's just downright amazing to me that he has the time to do all that he does, and never without the kind kind of rigorous intellectual capacity he is known for.

Seems a piece like this would really shake the mainstream of this country, who probably invented the man's best friend thing. There's so much that goes on under the veneer of this great "democratic experiment" and "Great Society" bullshit that we've all been trained to gobble down from the time we're indoctrinated as kindergarteners pledging allegiance to the flag.

Sadly just another vicious aspect of capitalism amok with hardly anyone ready to stand up against the whole system devouring us and our dignity, and that of animals' too.
