#BoycottGoogleSearch

https://www.counterpunch.org/2017/11/24/why-is-googles-eric-schmidt-so-a...

Eric Emerson Schmidt’s name is associated with the world’s largest and most systematic data collecting search engine, Google, that millions upon millions use. School children, teachers, parents, media people, politicians and you and I all daily “google” what we need to know.

sounds god like to me, or maybe more cult like, either way
who the fuck is he to decide.

Playing God

This very powerful corporate leader with a open political orientation has decided – as will be seen 58 seconds into the video – that the Internet and his hugely dominating search engine a) shall cave in to political pressure, b) de-rank at least these two Russian media organizations because c) he knows they are “propaganda outlets” (it isn’t discussed at all or compared with US or other countries’ media) and d) in the name of political correctness it is OK to limit the freedom of opinion-formation.

In fact, he says in a few words that he – well, not he himself but a computer program and mechanism called an algorithm – shall decide what you are I shall be able to find. Google as Good, Google as God.

Conspicuously, his de-ranking – read censorship – policy shall not hit media (as far as we can understand from this clip at least and not from this backgrounder either) that have, for instance, been using fake news and planted stories, omitted facts and perspectives and sources and told us propaganda and worse about, say, US wars around the world.

It’s Russia’s media. And naturally you ask: Whose next? And where does that end? (“Wherever they burn books, in the end will also burn human beings.” – Heinrich Heine).

As he asks the $64 mil question, whose next?

Google, and to as much extent as possible, Facebook. And Twitter.

I've been boycotting such for many, many years. Google has very little information about me. I use DuckDuckGo search and have for years. I block the hidden Google trackers and Facebook trackers and advertising trackers that build profiles of which websites you visit. I've removed just about all references to me with Google searches. Never joined Facebook in the first place.

It is very complicated, though. Facebook asks you to upload all your contacts to them when you start an account, so if you are a contact on anyone else's mobile phone, you have a hidden page on Facebook (I'm sure it's the same on Google+). You can encourage people you know to remove any contact information about you in their Facebook accounts at the following link (they will need to log in to their account from that page to remove it):

https://www.facebook.com/invite_history.php

but you'll need to do that with EVERYONE who might have you as a contact in their phone and who belongs to Facebook and who uploaded their contact list (most people actually do, it seems). See the following link as to how Facebook builds a profile about you whether you're a member or not--they almost certainly have your name, phone number, and any other information someone might have about you (address, nicknames, etc.):

https://gizmodo.com/how-facebook-figures-out-everyone-youve-ever-met-181...

People are so, well, stupid when it comes to things like this. They don't expect they are giving so much personal information about their friends and family to some third party to use as they see fit.

Also, take a look at DuckDuckGo's "How to Live without Google" page for good tips as to how to avoid that beast as much as possible:

https://spreadprivacy.com/how-to-remove-google/

Final tip--never give anyone online your real phone number or email address. Not even when using Amazon or shopping for things. Just make a note of your confirmation number for a purchase and check in yourself to track it (You can contact Them, never have Them contact You).

So have most other modern search engines.

The "relevance algorithm" -- the reason you don't just get "Fred" when you run a search on "Fred" -- is part-and-parcel of all surviving search engines.

Back when there was real competition between search engines, sites like the now-defunct Metacrawler offered a "search the search engines" functionality which bypassed this problem somewhat. But the competition is gone -- all major search engines behave in remarkably Google-like ways, so Metacrawler no longer does anything, and thus has gone away.

Unfortunately, this also means that boycotting Google won't accomplish much, as everybody else is essentially Google, too. Best bet: go for personal privacy, and leverage your searches to force the engines to reveal what Google doesn't want revealed. DuckDuckGo does this without requiring any leveraging; ixquick/StartPage has gone to being an anonymizer for Google, so leveraging search terms is essential there.

You may need to obtain full-admin access to your tablet (root it) in order to do that. Android is Google's Linux flavor and, of course, the Google relationship is baked-in.

Far too many politicians have been properly bribed.

About the only way we can keep it is if we pony up MORE money, to prevent them selling off the infrastructure for pennies on the investment.

And then even if they're properly bribed by the people, that will last only for one session. Unfortunately both the Democrats and Rethugs are united in their belief that the best populace is an ignorant and compliant one.

Time to play some music that the PTB don't like. Because I know for a fact that at least one country already bans these guy's videos for stupid reasons.

It's Russia. And the ban isn't principally on their videos; it's on them. Some arch-doltarians in positions of power seem to think Sabaton's a bunch of Nazis. This about a power metal band whose main themes are to glorify those who fought the Nazis!

Seems the metalheads in Stalingrad/Volgograd have their facts straight, while government bureaucrats in Moscow have their heads firmly implanted you-know-where!

Real Artists and politicians are natural enemies.

Politicians never like paying for work, and expect artists to glorify them for free and get very pissy when you stray from approved scripts.

As Michelangelo can tell you, that problem's a lot older than the heavy metal genre! "When will you be finished?" "When I am done! When will you start paying me?"

Or, as one early psychedelic rock band put it so well:

Sitting and staring out of the hotel window
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
Like to get some sleep before I travel
But if you got a warrant I guess you're gonna come in

@Arrow is a climate change denial site.

A little info about Tony Heller a/k/a Steven Goddard (short version):

I’m climate change denier Tony Heller. You might know me better by my pen name, “Steven Goddard,” or Twitter handle, @SteveSGoddard. This is my story.

First, you should know that I’m pretty much a nobody in the climate debate. I’m laughed at by all climatologists. I’m not even taken seriously by true climate skeptics. I don’t have a degree in climatology. I haven’t written a single academic paper about climate change and I don’t have a job related to climatology or the weather. What I do have is a blog and a Twitter account. And as it turns out, that’s pretty much all you need to be a somebody in the climate debate.

Like a shit stain, my blog is ugly, embarrassing and, as much as you hate to, it’s something you have to deal with. One fellow climate denier described my blog as “the crack house of skepticism.” But enough uneducated morons and right-wing ideologues link to my blog to grant me substantial ranking on Google search results. As a result, any layperson on the Internet who has researched global warming with Google to a fair degree has likely read the bullshit posted on my website where I claim to be able to drive 250,000 visitors to my site every week and have received over 20 million page views as of November 2014. I have also attracted over 4000 11,000 14,000 19,000 Twitter followers with more than 18,000 50,000 84,000 111,000 tweets. And so although a complete nobody in the climate debate, I have a fair amount of influence over thousands, perhaps millions, of impressionable individuals who don’t have a basic grasp of the facts on global warming.

Longer version:

Background

Steven Goddard is a global warming skeptic, regular contributor to WattsUpWithThat (WUWT), and operator of ”The Deplorable Climate Science Blog.” The name “Steven Goddard” is a pseudonym used by Tony Heller, which he confirmed himself in June 2014. [3], [4], [2], [30], [32]

Tony Heller describes himself as “an independent thinker who is considered a heretic by the orthodoxy on both sides of the climate debate.” He has degrees in Geology and Electrical Engineering, and lives in Columbia, Maryland. He describes global warming as the “biggest scientific fraud in history.” [30], [9]

Steven Goddard is known for a 2008 article in The Register where he posited that Arctic Sea ice is not receding and claimed that data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) showing the opposite was incorrect. Goddard later issued a retraction on his statement. [...]

Key Deeds

2017

Tony Heller is listed as a contributor to the upcoming release of Climate Change: The Facts 2017, a book released by the Institute for Public Affairs (IPA) and edited by Jennifer Marohasy. While investigating the authors, DeSmog noted that one of the IPA's listed “leading experts” involved in the book is New Zealand’s Ken Ring, who in addition to being a described “long range weather forecaster” has written “two, possibly three, books about cats” including Pawmistry: How to Read Your Cat’s Paws in 1998. [41]

According to the book description: [42]

“Climate Change: The Facts 2017 brings together contributions on the latest climate science from some of the world’s leading experts in the field including John Abbot, Sallie Baliunas, Paul Driessen, Tony Heller, Craig Idso, Clive James, Pat Michaels, Jo Nova, Ian Plimer, Tom Quirk, Peter Ridd, Ken Ring, Nicola Scafetta, Willie Soon, Roy Spencer, and Anthony Watts.

There are also essays by Matt Ridley, and Bjørn Lomborg on the economics of climate change, and by Simon Breheny on how the freedom to discuss climate change science is under threat.” [42]

Prior versions of the book featured contributions from a range of prominent climate change deniers, and describes mainstream climate change research as “pseudo-science.” [43]

August 23, 2017

Writing at The Deplorable Climate Science Blog, Heller claimed that, since 1990, “The measured NOAA data shows no warming.” “The data is simply fake,” he said. [44]

Apart from himself, Heller does not cite any external sources to explain how he reached his conclusion. However, he signs off with a final statement that “This is the biggest and most cynical scam in science history.” [44]

Writing at Breitbart, James Delingpole shared Goddard's graph, echoing his sentiment that “All of recent U.S. warming has been faked by NOAA.”

“You don’t need to be a scientist to see the hoax here: it’s there in blue and red,” Delingpole wrote. [45]

February 24, 2017

Tony Heller was the moderator of a discussion panel sponsored by the CO2 Coalition at the 2017 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). The panel included Kathleen Hartnett-White and Craig Idso of the CO2 Coalition. View video of the event at the Energy & Environment Legal Institute's Facebook page. [38]

Heller, a self-described “lifelong environmentalist,” began his introduction by describing his regular commute by bicycle past the Valmont coal-fired power plant near his home in Boulder Colorado. It was “Beautiful clean coal, it puts out no visible pollution whatsoever. 24/7 reliable power,” Heller said of the coal plant. [38]

“When I was a kid, you know, growing up in school, we all leaned that carbon dioxide was a good thing,” Heller said in the introduction. “That it was essential for life. Photosynthesis required chlorophyl, carbon dioxide, water, and sunshine in order to create life. So it’s kind of odd to see this transition over the past few decades where carbon dioxide got demonized. It started out as a good thing, essential for life. […] Now we’re told that tiny amounts of carbon dioxide can destroy all life.” [38]

Before introducing Craig Idso, who would be “doing the science,” Heller asked, “Which one is the true story? Is carbon dioxide essential for life? Is it a good thing? Or is it something that’s going to destroy the planet?” [38]

After Idso finished his talk, Heller noted: [38]

“My takeaway from that [Craig Idso’s talk] is that efforts to reduce CO2 are not only anti-science, but they’re anti-human.” [38]

February 23, 2017

Tony Heller was a speaker on a CPAC 2017 panel sponsored by the Energy and Environment Legal Institute (E&E Legal) titled “Fake Climate News Camouflaging an Anti-Capitalist Agenda – and What President Trump Plans To Do About It,” according to the CPAC agenda (PDF). [39]

E&E News reported that the panel included fellow climate change deniers Steve Milloy and James Delingpole. Heller accused the government of manipulating statistics to make people “absurd” and “fake news” regarding climate change. [40]

“Right now, conservatives get blamed for every bad weather event and for climate change, right. It's our fault,” Heller said. “But hundreds of years ago, it was witches who were blamed for it.” [40]

February 7, 2017

Tony Heller received an invitation by Senator Doug Ericksen to speak at the Senate Energy, Environment and Telecommunications committee at the Washington State Capitol in Olympia. [37]

“I see that global warming has become a distraction which has derailed the environmental movement,” Heller said during his presentation. [37]

Heller went on to claim that climate scientists have purposely altered for fabricated data to support their theories, and accused “climate alarmists” of spreading this bad data. Democratic Senator Kevin Ranker responded, saying “I feel like some of this presentation may be alternative facts.” Near the end of the presentation, a single protestor called out and said the presentation was an insult to “settled science.” [37]

I can't parse apart the billionaire asshole behavior sometimes, it is the same company, the same algorithms, the same rotten stinking advertisements. They are worthless to humanity, do not deserve support. Their awful culture has ruined the Bay Area, it just keeps getting worse. Californian Ideology writ large. http://www.arpnet.it/chaos/barbrook.htm

The Rebirth of the Modern
The Californian Ideology rejects notions of community and of social progress and seeks to chain humanity to the rocks of economic and technological fatalism. Once upon a time, West Coast hippies played a key role in creating our contemporary vision of social liberation. As a consequence, feminism, drug culture, gay liberation and ethnic identity have, since the 1960s, ceased to be marginal issues. Ironically, it is now California which has become the centre of the ideology which denies the relevance of these new social subjects.

It is now necessary for us to assert our own future - if not in circumstances of our own choosing. After twenty years, we need to reject once and forever the loss of nerve expressed by post-modernism. We can do more than 'play with the pieces' created by the avant-gardes of the past.

We need to debate what kind of hypermedia suits our vision of society - how do we create the interactive products and on-line services we want to use, the kind of computers we like and the software we find most useful. We need to find ways to think socially and politically about the machines we develop. While learning from the can-do attitude of the Californian individualists, we also must recognise the potentiality of hypermedia can never be solely realised through market forces. We need an economy which can unleash the creative powers of hi-tech artisans. Only then can we fully grasp the Promethean opportunities as humanity moves into the next stage of modernity.

Next facebook. Evil. Zuck evicts poor people all over the place, he can because he is a billionaire. Asshole. San Francisco is a cesspool of corruption. Amoral politicians abound, local, state, federal.

Filter out all robots and advertisers, that's what I say. Clean up the Internets for real, bring back public airwaves with no proprietary algorithms in between. /whiplash
