Bipartisan anti-immigrant rampage

Image of drowned father and daughter sparks global outrage against US anti-immigrant rampage

The photo of a young Salvadoran worker and his 23-month-old daughter washed up on the shore of the Rio Grande has gone viral on social media and sparked world-wide outrage against the sadistic assault on immigrants being carried out by Trump, with the full assistance of the Democratic Party.

The photo of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his daughter Angie Valeria, taken Monday by journalist Julia Le Duc, encapsulates the human toll of the fascistic and dictatorial policies being carried out by the Trump administration. The two victims succumbed to the powerful currents of the swollen river one day after having sought to apply for asylum, along with Oscar’s wife Tania Vanessa Avalos, at the legal port of entry between Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas.

The father and his daughter were among the many thousands of Central American workers fleeing violence and poverty in their home countries, the legacy of a century of US imperialist subversion and exploitation. The young family was prevented from applying for asylum as a result of Trump’s “metering” policy, which effectively strips immigrants of their internationally guaranteed asylum rights by forcing them to wait in Mexico for weeks or months in sordid, prison-like camps. The family then decided to risk the dangerous river crossing. Vanessa Avalos could only watch in helpless horror from the Mexican side as her husband and daughter drowned.

IMG_3563.JPG

The image has been published in newspapers around the world, intensifying the popular hatred, including among American workers and youth, for the Trump government.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issued a denunciation of the Trump administration, comparing the photo to the picture of the three-year-old refugee child Aylan Kurdi, who drowned in the Mediterranean and whose body washed up on a beach in Turkey in 2015. The comparison underscored the international character of the attack on immigrants being carried out by capitalist governments across Europe and elsewhere. This includes Mexico, where Mexican President Lopez Obrador has mobilized 20,000 national guardsmen to serve as Trump’s anti-immigrant enforcers on the Mexican side of the border.

Also on the weekend, US Border Patrol agents found four bodies along the Rio Grande in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley, about 55 miles west of Brownsville—one toddler, two infants and a 20-year-old woman.

The Democratic Party has responded to the escalating war on immigrants by voting overwhelmingly to grant Trump another $4.5 billion dollars to build more detention facilities, shore up the US military presence on the border and otherwise strengthen Gestapo-like anti-immigrant agencies such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On the same day the photo of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his daughter was published, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed a $4.5 billion funding bill that allocates $788 million for new CBP facilities to hold asylum-seeking families and children. It provides $866 million for facilities run by the Health and Human Services Department (HHS) where unaccompanied children are sent after they are released from CBP jails. It also includes $128 million for ICE.

In the vote on the House bill, all but four voting Democrats voted “yes.” The four supposed “progressives” who cast “no” votes—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib—did so only after having assured passage of the measure by voting to bring it up for a floor vote. Of the four House members who did not vote, three were Democratic presidential candidates—Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), Eric Swalwell (California) and Tim Ryan (Ohio)—who ducked a vote for crass electoral reasons.

Seven of the eight non-voters were Democratic presidential candidates, including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Michael Bennet, Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand. None were prepared to register opposition to practices that have repelled millions of workers and youth who never thought such Nazi-like methods would be seen in the United States, and who, unlike the big business politicians of both parties, retain a deep commitment to democratic rights.

The Senate bill is even more overtly repressive than the House version, including fewer token restrictions on the brutalization of immigrants and an additional $145 million for US military operations on the border—a tacit legitimization of Trump’s illegal and indefinite deployment of active duty troops to aid police actions within the borders of the US.

On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi telephoned Trump to assure him that the House Democrats were prepared to accept most, if not all, of the Senate bill’s provisions in order to avoid a threatened presidential veto. The Democrats are eager to secure a deal before the week-long Fourth of July recess, which begins on Thursday.

This “human rights” treacle to justify Gestapo attacks on defenseless foreign workers and children mirrors the justifications used to support one neo-colonial war after another in the Middle East and Africa—wars that have destroyed entire countries, killed millions and created the conditions for the biggest wave of refugees since World War II.

The same day, while the House Democrats were preparing to vote for the administration’s border war money, acting CBP Commissioner John Sanders resigned and Trump officials let it be known that the White House had selected acting ICE Director Mark Morgan to replace him.

Morgan, who served as assistant commissioner of CBP under Obama, has made no bones about his hatred for undocumented immigrants and desire to drive them out of the country. As acting head of ICE, Morgan had authored the plan for mass raids in US cities that Trump has postponed. He reportedly clashed with acting head of the Homeland Security Department, Kevin McAleenan, when the latter urged Trump to hold off on the raids.

Morgan spent 11 years in the Marine Corps and 20 years in the FBI. A government source told the pro-Trump Washington Examiner: “Ultimately, it’s Trump’s decision. McAleenan won the last fight, and now it looks like [Stephen] Miller’s gonna win this fight.” The anti-immigrant fanatic and fascist Miller directs immigration policy in the White House.

While out of government, Morgan appeared regularly on Fox News. In one appearance, he said of child incarceration, “They’re not cages. They’re actually really nice facilities.”
He said of vigilante militia groups on the border: “Why are they doing it? Because they’re there and they see what the rest of us are seeing, that the southwest border is being overrun. Border Patrol and other law enforcement entities there are overwhelmed and they feel like they have no choice.”
He has also boasted of looking into detained children’s eyes and seeing that they are “soon-to-be MS-13 gang members”.

Warren was asked to go to a detention center in Florida to protest against what's happening there and of course people say that this is what all democratic candidates should do. But where was her outrage before she went there? Or any ones? Never mind I know the answer....

IMG_3559_0.JPG

I will not be silent on the heinous act that our government is doing to desperate people who are fleeing from the conditions that this country has inflicted on theirs. If our government can treat immigrants and especially children the way they are then imagine what they could do with us. Too many people see nothing wrong with the way these people are being treated. I find that not only sad, but frightening.

At Trump? Well he deserves it, but what about at Reagan, who supported the death squads that these people were fleeing? All right, Reagan is dead, well then how about a man who's still alive and is licking the blood from his hands, John Bolton? Being outraged over Trump's racism while forgetting to be be outraged against America's historic and greater evil is hypocrisy, nothing but support of the capitalists who started and perpetuate this evil for their own profits.

How about outrage at Obama and HRC for supporting the overthrow of Zelaya in Honduras and replacement with a fascist kleptocracy?

This essay's very author was quite elaborate (and strident!) about that very outrage, especially during the 2016 elections.

How about some outrage for the people protesting Wayfair donating beds for the detention centers? Yes, liberals are outraged about donations of beds to help these people. First dems are all outraged about the lack of beds, but now they protest. This just proves their lack of good faith re: illegals.

Further, how about some outrage at the idiots who are endangering their children? My dad took good care of us kids - he would have never put us at risk like these so-called parents are doing.

That's similar to giving Trump credit for basically anything not attacking Iran in that the democrats are the lead war/imperialism/neoliberal capitalism party at this point which is the primary reason for the border problems in the first place.
And I'm not saying you are giving them credit sd, just saying.

And as for that news about the votes and who and why, all I can say is weasels. A bunch of weasels and that includes Gabbard. She's been skipping out on key votes since shortly before she announced. Maybe that's normal for those types, but it's still being a weasel.

As OPOL (One Pissed Off Liberal), Mollie (Unabashed Liberal), and many other locals hereabouts can tell you, the current crop of Dem congresscreatures are about as genuinely liberal as Genghis Khan or Vlad "The Impaler" Tepes. Not to be confused with neoliberal, please note well.

I only know of two members of the current United States Congress who can claim to be genuine liberals, Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard.

By my late 1970s standards, the entire Congress -- both houses -- is GOP.

My genuinely liberal Democratic maternal grandparents are both dead. And with this kind of crap coming from today's Dems, they're grateful. Wink

@snoopydawg long, long ago, before the crisis started (per posters on this site), that I said the migrants would need food, shelter, and medical supplies?

I believe the diary was discussing how it would be done (military, dept of human services, dept of home security).

I think the migrants should stay in their home countries; I think the US should provide more aid for economic development (as he has mentioned).

Further, I am not going to back down over horrible parenting. That guy had no business trying to cross the Rio Grande with his child. That was child abuse. People die from those attempts. I don't view him in any better light than people who kill their kids by leaving them in hot cars.

I would appreciate it if you would cool your rage. You are not the only person who feels rage over the situation. I feel a lot of rage over people who are choosing migrants over our own citizens. But I don't keep expressing rage-full tones.

To me, that choice is as bad as what the neo-libs, neo-cons politicians and companies did when they sold out the US.

Anything to say about this topic? You were complaining about the democrats not giving Trump any money for the border and now they not only passed a bill in the house they signed on to the senates bill.

BTW I'm not raging out. I'm thoroughly disgusted with what is happening to children by our hands. I am not choosing migrants over US citizens. I've admitted that this issue is complicated, but that doesn't mean that we should commit crimes against humanity which is exactly what is happening to the children.

I think the migrants should stay in their home countries; I think the US should provide more aid for economic development (as he has mentioned).

I have mentioned this numerous times here that Trump cut off aid to the Central American countries that the immigrants are fleeing from. I have posted links to this and yet you are still saying that he is going to be giving them aid.

What I wonder is why nobody has ever posted any direct evidence of these alleged "people who are financing the migrants". You know, contact names, exact amounts and vector pathways for these alleged funds, etc.

That an occasional migrant happens to possess a tent, or intact clothing, etc., is not evidence of the external "financing" you claim to exist. Neither is any other circumstantial crap. Only direct evidence will do. Sorry.

Please either post the direct evidence, with your own hands directly into c99, or please stop treating the "people who are financing the migrants" stuff as fact. Without real, direct evidence, it's not fact and shouldn't be so treated. Just because you beLIEve something doesn't make it so, either.

So tell me, where are all these naked migrants? All the pictures I've seen show people in colorful, even stylish clothes, nice back packs, blankets, etc. They are largely young and healthy, with some obesity with the women.

They are all so, so, so very poor, yet they have all of this stuff. So where did all the stuff come from?

If I had jurisdiction, you better believe I would be digging into the financing. I am sure some intrepid reporter(s) are trying to do that right now. But even then, how would you expect to find out what cash goes where when you have countries that shelter funds?

They look downright great compared to real refugees you see in African or other eastern countries.

And I suppose you have never heard of the open border groups?

@snoopydawg after the antics of AOC, Ilhan Omar and the progressives, and a deeper thought process over the entire situation which includes personal responsibility, cost, etc., i.e., ideology, I'm one of those slowing turned from the liberal mindset toward one of "hey, we're going too far here". Fwiw, my 70 yr old sister goes to a food bank every week, usually standing in line for hours, and see's the people driving up in the Mercedes and BMWs, hears the conversations while standing in line, etc. She's realized there simply has to be some measure of accountability and responsibility and we're treading on overkill relative to what the government can and should do.

No, methinks that wendy davis wants Mexico to "assert its own national prerogatives as a supposed independent nation". Specifically, the national prerogative as a supposed independent nation of not having the USA President set its security priorities.

Trump said: "Shit!" and AMLO answered "What color, sir?". That's not Mexico asserting its own national prerogatives as a supposed independent nation; that's AMLO doing the Drumpmeister's bidding. And that tariff threat from the Drumpmeister is naught besides high school bullying.
