In 1976, Democrats held the majority in both houses of Congress.

This is one of many illustrations of what I posted on NCTim's open thread this very morning. Not to mention the Biden, who has a long history of racism and sexism, seems to be the Democrats' anointee this time around. And Brazile claims she was ready to put him in last time, when Hillary's numbers went down. And, of course, Obama chose him as Vice President. So, all that shows how very sincere Democrats are not about women and minorities.

The tent wasn't always as big as it was cracked up to be. Maybe it still isn't.

ETA: Democrats voted for it heavily: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/votes/94-1976/h952

This article provides some background on the "saintly" Henry Hyde, who had served on the House Banking Committee and was Chair of the Judiciary Committee during the Clinton impeachment. (Hyde was a Republican U.S. Congressmen from 1975-2007.) While Hyde was a member of Congress, he served on the board of directors of Clyde Federal Savings & Loan, which eventually failed in 1990 due to risky financial options. (Congress deregulated the Savings & Loan industry in 1982.) The U.S. government had to pay out $67 million for insured deposits, but settled with the defendants for $850,000; however a special settlement was reached with Hyde who was exempted from paying anything. The media loved to portray Hyde as an all-around great guy with such presence and authority.
