Betsy DeVos and the inner circle of the ruling elites

Billionaire Betsy DeVos, the former Secretary of Education, who had never been inside of a public school in her life, who is also the sister of Blackwater-founder and war criminal Erik Prince, has a charmed existence.
It seems that once you get high enough into the upper strata of the ruling elites, then nearly anything can be overlooked or forgiven altogether.

In July 2019, DeVos repealed the “Gainful Employment Rule,” which required schools to certify their programs adequately prepared students for decent-paying jobs after graduation. Proposed in 2014 and enacted one year later, the rule was intended to safeguard students from deceptive marketing by predatory, for-profit schools and inform them if a particular program offered a reasonable return on investment.
...
DeVos nixed the rule, arguing the repeal would eliminate onerous reporting requirements for colleges and allow students to retain “the right to enroll in the program of their choice, rather than allowing government to decide which programs are worth a student’s time and financial investment.”

The American Federation of Teachers, California Federation of Teachers and two individual teachers pursuing higher education sued DeVos in January.

Devos was, of course, financially involved with many of those private, predatory institutions. Which was why DeVos ignored all evidence in the case in order to make her ruling.

In a 24-page ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Edward Davila, a Barack Obama appointee, tossed nearly all claims asserted in both lawsuits, finding the court could not address the plaintiffs’ grievances by reinstating the Obama-era rule.

The judge only upheld a single claim, that the "Education Department failed to specify the research and an analysis it relied upon to make its decision".
Obviously it is because there was no research and analysis, but that's neither here nor there.
Why? Because Betsy DeVos doesn't live in a world of consequences like you and I do.

“Politics now are so often about people, not the policies that impact lives directly,” she said, according to the Detroit Free Press, adding that in today’s political landscape, “principles have been overtaken by personalities.”

She's so right. The only thing she got wrong was that she doesn't realize that she's talking about herself.

Here's where it gets funny. Devos is outraged by the Department of Justice for acting to protect the safety of school boards.

Former Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is criticizing the Department of Justice's (DOJ) recent decision to investigate potential acts of violence against school boards, saying it's a "shameless" attempt to silence parents who are invested in their children's education.

Allow me to emphasize that she is a former Secretary of Education and hard-core Republican, criticizing a Democratic Department of Justice for a token effort for the safety of public school boards.
Now how do you think that the Democratic DOJ would react to that?
If you thought that partisan politics would win here, you are most definitely wrong. What wins here is being in the upper strata of the ruling elites.

The Biden administration attempted to prevent former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos from testifying in a class-action lawsuit that alleges the Department of Education ineffectively managed thousands of student loans.
Oral arguments seeking to block DeVos's testimony were presented on Wednesday before a panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit after U.S. District Judge William Alsup decided in May that DeVos would be required to testify for the case.

At the request of the class-action lawsuit's plaintiffs, Alsup found that "extraordinary circumstances" justified the rare deposition of a former secretary.

The Biden administration appealed Alsup's decision, arguing that the "firmly established" policy that says "heads of government agencies are not normally subject to deposition" should be applied in this case.

Let's remember that this Obama-appointed judge, Alsup, threw out virtually everything of substance from the lawsuits against Trump-Administration's DeVos' law-breaking. Alsup kept in a single, indisputable claim, and the Biden Administration quickly moved in to defend DeVos from even the most mild of consequences.
While DeVos is berating that same DOJ for doing their jobs.

@gjohnsit ...I tried very hard to drum up optimism in the face of the increasingly pessimistic drumbeat, and active retroactive-nullification of basically my entire life, and my generation's rightful place in history.

Sometimes I got a good reaction in the form of a fair number of "reccs"...but it's the aggressively, dogmatically negative reactions that continue to haunt me. They seemed determined to reject good news, and belittle me for thinking it.

That "TrueBlueMajority" character in particular haunts some level of my vertebral column. I wish there was some kind of "Turing Test" to identify astroturfers; it would be a load off my mind if I could confirm certain voices I've encountered were just Stasi.
