Artistic Sculpture or Pornography

I found this article Giant Nude Statue in California is stirring Controversy to be a bit amusing. But, I have spent my entire life around artists in academic institutions, hence, I am so very out of touch with the people of the real world.

Americans are so prudish
There is absolutely nothing obscene about that statue. I happen to like it. Very graceful lines.
Back when I was a teenager in St. Pete Florida, an (amateur) sculptor donated a 20 foot tall bust of the head of St. Peter. It was made of concrete over some sort of base. The thing was simply god awful. The city decided to place it on a traffic island on the south side of town where I lived. Every day when I drove to school, I had to go by it. I do not know what happened to it and never could find out about it by googling. But it was not art. It was obscene because it was simply ugly. LOL
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy
Put a burqa on it!!11!!!
Or something. God forbid anyone should be assaulted with the sight of female empowerment.
BTW, sculpture was created for Burning Man 2013

I was in Oslo, on a summer day in 1989.
After my breakfast of five different kinds of pickled herring, I went for a walk to explore around town. I found a huge park, with a large display of nude sculpture Some of them were towers, people standing on each others shoulders...I think older people were at the bottom, and so on. There we a number of people sunbathing in the park, too. Nobody thought anything of it. Well, I thought the pickled herring were odd.

Pickled herring odd? That's cusswords like not liking lox!
Weird day here. Does everyone in the US have headaches today?
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
"If you've got kids you do not want them seeing that."
Wow. I feel sorry for her kids.
Nope. Can't have their little minds corrupted by a piece of art called "Truth is Beauty".
And that is why
Hillary Clinton has a unibrow.

I'm having a flashback to AG John Ashcroft draping a
statue because of an uncovered breast.

Like he's never sooooared before . . .."
Gah!
"The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?" ~Orwell, "1984"
You beat me to it
John Ashcroft being embarrassed by a naked statue was the first thing that popped into my mind. (Goddess help me.)

How about a painting -- A new painting
borrowing from Da Vinci's Last Supper setting but depicting the founding fathers signing the Constitution in the nude. That should offend at least a few people. Send a copy to Ted Cruz.

They don't think their kids see nudity now? It's everywhere. If
a kid has a phone, they see all kinds of nudity.
These people are absolute fools. My idea of obscene is a snapshot of a dead refugee baby lying on a beach. They surely must have squawked about that, right? Or simulated killings in their movies and t.v. shows? In their video games? And in their music which is very very misogynistic.
If they can let all that fly and yet bitch about this statue, there is something very wrong with those people.

2500 years later and some people still don't get it
Praxiteles probably sculpted this statue in Athens back in 350 BC;
He was probably the first to sculpt a nude woman figure.
The Egyptians were on track thousands of years before;
The political revolution continues
Bbut I just complained to the Museum Of Egyptlogy
that one of their staues had a King torso, but a wife's full, buff body. [I saw Nefertiti in Berlin]

nude women in sculpture is as old as......sculpture
Venus of Willindorf is what, 25,000 years old?
A mere lass, when compared to she :

Oh look!
You can see his willie!
Absolutely disgraceful.

And he's uncut ;-)
Guess Michelangelo couldn't find any circumcised models to work from.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Durn tootin' it's disgraceful
Durn tootin' it's disgraceful to sculpt such a wee willy on such a nicely built man!
Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.
A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
Well, Michelangelo seems
to be definitively contradicting all those "small hands=small penis" assertions, with this work of art.

The model must have been a real man.
Real life is not able to compete with The Matrix. Unrealistic expectations (of various types) have become epidemic (pandemic) in my not so humble opinion. I have seen this pox on society do harm to my students over the past few decades.
genitalia removed from Parthenon frieze
This photo is not clear enough to reveal the missing bits . . .
When I get back to Kearney NE in the next couple of weeks, I could take some better pictures of this phallic symbol as well as the Parthenon frieze copy from which the concrete details were formed. If anyone is interested, the story (I could write about) behind the building of this bell tower is both very funny and very sad.
Well, OMG, that multi-brick base is tasteless.
But I have an artistic sensibility. You are mid-move now?

I'm going with lousy, modern public 'art'.
This is not one for the ages.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Someone's moron god thinks the human body obscene.
What kind of god would create beauty and then make it 'bad' to appreciate it? What kind of god values slaughter over love for our fellow travelers? No god I want nor want my grandchildren 'worshipping'.
There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties.. This...is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.--John Adams
The only thing I see wrong with it is that men will drive off
the road looking at it. We need a lot more nude female statues so you can acclimate before you hurt yourselves. Perhaps we should begin along walkways not visible from streets.

Funny Image
The first thing that popped into my mind was the scene in The Long Kiss Goodnight wherein Mitch Henessey (Samuel L. Jackson) loses control while driving by a female jogger and Charly Baltimore (Geena Davis) asks him what he got out of the experience.
