With Apologies to Pink Floyd

Though I suspect that they and Roger Waters would approve -and it does give me an excuse to post this vid:

Just go
The polling booth - get in there
The Whitehouse is missing me
It really is my home

Come on now
I hear Libya’s going down
Bill will feel your pain
And we will lie to you again

Relax
Neocons will be the first
War crimes and other acts
We’ll hit them all where it hurts

There will be pain - machine needs feeding
An extinguished town smoke on the horizon
The stealth bombers coming through in waves
Your lips move but I don’t care what you’re saying
Watching others die gives me no fever
My hands rest on the nuclear buttons
Now I’ve got that feeling once again
This is how I am
I get to do this - because freedom

OK just a little drone strike
There will be no more
What is not to like?

Don’t you stand up
Unquestioning obedience is good
You’ll learn this is my show
Come on, it's time to go.

There will be pain - machine needs feeding
An extinguished town smoke on the horizon
The stealth bombers coming through in waves
Your lips move but I don’t care what you’re saying

When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
All of the toys of the Pentagon
I want to get my fingers on them now
They are my own
When everything's gone
I get to do this - because freedom

The first time I heard it back in 1979 it stopped me dead in my tracks and not many songs do that. Then this version with Eddie Vedder on lead vocals had exactly the same effect - it was like hearing it for the first time again.

For some reason the song was stuck in my head when I woke up this morning and I was looking for an excuse to do some work avoidance. Rewriting lyrics is not one of my usual pastimes but this just felt right.

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself. - Friedrich Nietzsche -
