12/18 is International Migrants Day

It is International Migrants Day. A surprisingly non-verbose UN holiday.

On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

~Wikipedia

Migant workers, especially in agribusiness have a long history, both internal migrants who follow the ag cycles around the country, and thosw who travel between countries, such as those who made annual trips to the US from Mexico under the Bracero Program of yore.

Korematsu v US was decided on this day in 1944. It was neither the first nor the last Supreme Court decision to flagrantly ignore the US Constitution. Like some others, as well as a lot of terrible legislation, it was based on concern for "National Security" a phrase which, when invoked, usually means that we citizens just have stepped or are about to step in something really foul. In this case it meant that US citizens could be rounded up and sent to concentration camps for no reason other than their race. That is the lowest standard I know of, usually at least the claim that there is sekret "information" from a paid stoolie known for lying or the "assessment" of some spook known for incessant "errors" is trucked out before we lock folks up without evidence of wrongdoing, but, in this case, not even that.

The governmet did, in the fullness of time, apologize, but Korematsu is still on the books; it is still, technically, the law. Thay can do it again, all they have to do is say that they are afraid. It doesn't even have to be a rational fear, it can be as harebrained as claiming that you are a threat to national security because you post anonymously on facebook. Anything goes. Now they can even drone you for sitting somewhere without extradition and simply loudly and continually criticising the US' behavior. I know of no solution that doesn't start with us ceasing to be afraid of our shadows and of everybody who looks or talks different or who doesn't buy the "we are indispensible and uniquely wonderful" line which, in turn starts with ignoring the talking heads who advocate constant and continual fear of this, that or some other "other"

Hi all, Hey EL!

Hope it is good all over the place!

I figure I have migrated about a million miles around the lower 48. However currently I am a sedentary vagrant. I just love a good peregrination though, sorta gettin' itchy for one.

Awesome sounds man! What a great lineup!

Big hat tip for Bill Nelson. Amazing how recognizable his voice remained. I think it was management that screwed Be Bop Deluxe. They were great in the mid-70's. One of the biggest surprises I ever saw live. Outstanding players and band, especially Bill, sang, wrote, and arranged...

Keith and Bobby were always heroes to me. I think Live With Me on Let It Bleed was the first Bobby Keys sax solo on a Stones record. All of Sticky Fingers and Exile are Bobby sax. He was awesome.

I loved those early Animals V.1.0, and Janis with Big Brother.

On an unrelated subject... Here is some wisdom... she still flies at 72, at least!

Below pic is a Laysan about to receive some jewelry/hardware (a band) before I launch it back to Midway Is. This was in '97, 35 mi. W. of Pt. Conception over two mile deep water off the shelf-edge. Was a rehab needing release, and I had a trip going. You can tell a pro leader of a pelagic trip, is one that shows up with an albatross. You shoulda heard its sonorous honking on PCH from about Santa Monica to Malibu. Windows down, some guys in a red convertibles WTF look into our vehicle at a red light, bird not visible, I acted like I had gas. Wink

Oh yeah, and proof Keith R. was indeed a role model. I am holding the bird, a buddy has bill and a leg ready for banding. The 6'5" bander took three tries to close the band it was so big.

I gotta fly!

Great hat!. I've done some releases myself, but never an albatross, which would've been awesome. Congrats. What a wonderful experience.

@enhydra lutris Too funny! Yeah, guilty as charged... clearly not an OSHA approved release. Smile Actually it got Peter on the arm before he got the bill under control. Torn skin, blood, that hooked beak holds onto squid. There are some birds l would not get near without protection, like herons and such especially.

Always found it interesting how raptors will get you you with the talons and virtually never go after you with their bills, like even parrots do. But beware those feet!

take care brother!

I thought the little shit was going to tear the muscles of my forearm right off the bone, sneaked his foot in just above the cuff of my glove. Turkey vultures will go after you with their beaks because their feet are pretty feeble, but so are their bills, if you've been out in the sun and wind a bit all they can do is raise a blood blister.
