02/20 - World Day of Social Justice

I Want To Be Able To Show My Neices

~~ Social Justice

It's World Day of Social Justice. I almost used a picture of Emiliano Zapata who famously said If there is no justice for the people, let there be no peace for the government. This is a UN holiday and it takes a lot of gall for them to speak of social justice when so many of the member states have no taste for it or examples of it whatsoever. Actually, I suspect that social justice isn't an identifiable thing or state but a sort of scale of attainment such as "you can have a minuscule amount of social justice, or an extemely tiny one or a tiny one or, theoretically even larger amounts, though no such have ever been documented in human history except is very small communities.

It is in fact a very strange type of thing. You can see that it is lacking everywhere around you and even far away and, in general, anywhere you look. Yet you cannot really define it except insofar as it is lacking damn near everywhere. People have been trying to define it for ages upon ages and have failed. Arguably it is the situation that would exist if each and every individual acted at all times and in all things according to some perfectionist maxim such as Kant's Categorical Imperative, or an alternative such as striving to generate the maximum benefit for the maximum number of people without causing harm or detriment to any. That's very easy to say but it requires all to have perfect knowledge of everything and its interconnectedness as well as an overabundance of good will. Heh. Suuuure. I suspect that existing in a socioeconomic milieu based entirely on competition, greed, and possessiveness does not portend well for such a situation to come to existence.

All the same, I guess that those of us who would like to see it exist must endeavor at all times to bring it about or at least facilitate it. Good luck to us all.

T'would be nice to see a little justice of any kind...social, political, economic, legal and so on.

It is Presidents day and a federal holiday, so no mail. Carnival started in Merida on the 15th, but we were flying home then.

Thanks for the OT. Looks chilly on the left coast. Headed to 80's here this week.

kind would be nice. It is nice to have holidays, even Presidents' DAy, but I have no idea how one would celebrate it. I suspect I greatly prefer Mardi Gras.

Links either the entire rally or to individual speeches (25 of them) are here - most live from the DC rally, a couple (Roger Water, Cynthia McKinney delivered remotely):

https://rageagainstwar.com/speeches/

I've only watched a few so far - none of them bad.

Have (so far) seen and can recommend that of McKinney, of Dan Cohen (from Redacted)

and Roger Waters (although he's harsher towards Russia than I am inclined to be)

Ron Paul maybe a bit scattered in his presentation, but inspiring nonetheless

watched the recent film "White Noise" over the weekend. It absurdist take on pretty much everything seemed to sit very well with us. But the truly amusing thing about it, set at a fictional college in a smallish town somewhere in Ohio, is its train derailment followed by a completely mishandled "airborne toxic event". Couldn't have been more prescient if it tried.

Very amusing escapism, and completely worth it just for the musical/dance number at the end. I'd heard the tune (by LCD Soundsystem) a bunch of times on our local indie radio station, but I had no idea that it was written specifically for the film. That was an hour and a half during which I didn't think at all about current events...

And now it is Monday, and we return to our usual wait for whatever will come next. Perhaps this evening we'll dust off our DVD of "Buckaroo Banzai".

that any not impossible catastrophe film is likely to be or become prescient at some point. Always a good time for Buckaroo; I have the directors' cut, which I've watched the hell out of.

HI all, Hey EL! Hope it's all good out there!

Social justice. How could something so right, be so rare in a just society?

Ansel Adams, a personal hero. His Sierra and Yosemite photos I think will never be matched. When one considers the 'tech' at the time, all the more astounding. Randy California was awesome too. Saw the original Spirit lineup (w/ Ferguson and Locke) about '80 at a small club in Hollywood, they were awesome. J. Geils was great too, saw them once, outstanding band. Imagine being so unique at what you do, they have to invent a new word for it? R.I.P. 'Gonzo' Hunter Thompson.

Day before yesterday Mrs. dysto and I had 500-600 Sandhill Crane bellowing that call of the wild riding the southerlies north. We heard twice as many more we could not see as they were right at cloud level 1000' AGL so we could only see the groups in openings. Man I love that sound. Spring.

Have good ones all!

More missile firings and military escalation news in northeast Asia.

Tim Shorrock has good coverage and links of these events on his twitter feed today. I don't know how to just post them here. An ICBM firing from North Korea, another joint US-ROK military air exercise with a B-1 bomber flight, followed by two more shorter ranged ballistic missile firings by North Korea, to be followed by another joint US-ROK exercise. Also he linked an asahi report on a joint US-Japanese military exercise. The Hankyoreh has an editorial advising the Yoon government to abandon "brinkmanship." (As if he would listen).

[Editorial] Korean Peninsula must choose diplomacy over brinkmanship
https://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/english_editorials/10804...

There had actually been a hiatus in North Korean missile launches since January 1, but no one from the US, Japan, or South Korea seems to have taken advantage at what was to me an obvious opportunity.

This is from Responsible Statecraft's review of Siegfried Hecker's new book (thanks Tim):

...There is no policy that cries out for revisiting core assumptions and learning from past failures than the policy that has aimed at blocking and then reversing North Korea’s nuclearization. Fortunately, there is a new book, “Hinge Points: An Inside Look at North Korea’s Nuclear Program,” that provides guidance on where Washington went wrong and how it may still be able to correct course.

The author, Siegfried Hecker, a former director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, argues that the United States failed to prevent the growth of North Korea’s arsenal by making the wrong choices at critical moments, or “hinge points,” when Washington erred in not properly assessing the risks of disengagement and walking away from agreements, and by relying too much on pressure tactics. Hecker is unsparing in his criticisms of the bad policy choices he identifies, but he delivers his assessments in a sober, matter-of-fact way. He faults each administration for its mistakes regardless of party affiliation.

Recommend the article.

I think inequity can be measured. I listened to a radio broadcast yesterday, discussing statistics from a study on access to health care in the US. Minorities are more adversely affected by costs of treatment. So deaths as a result of lack of care are higher. I think things like this can always be measured; if one wants to know, there's probably a study out there. On the other hand, when I used to walk into a the local jail or a holding cell at the courthouse and look at those incarcerated, I knew it when I saw it.

I made the mistake of watching Dem Now, this am. The news was so bad, I felt ill afterward.

Another holiday, another day of delay on the housing problem here. Oh well. Still have to go over there and bring in the trash cans.

Thanks for OT EL. Great conversations here, always enjoy the nature pics and music posted. South Korean singer/activist 김민정 Kim Min-jeong highlighted my youtube comment on her performance 9 days ago. I thought that was special, but she highlighted everyone's comments. Gave me a smile anyway.

Morning Dew
Staying up all night long
To every green leaf clinging, more lovely than pearls, the morning dew-
When sadness drop by drop weighs in my heart, the morning foothills
I climb- gaining a slight smile...
The red sun climbs over the graves...
In the midday blazing heat, my trials of yore,
Now, I go! Toward rough wilderness.
Let go all your sorrow. Now, we go!

music videos you offered. Thank You. It helps a little to get away from those war stuff I am drowned it through our public TV channels.

It is too depressive all of it. It is for sure impossible to celebrate President's Day with the current President at hand.

I need to concentrate on the music, otherwise I am going totally nuts.

Have all a nice President's day, hopefully with a nicer and smarter President next time around.

The pursuit of social justice -

2021 - Amy Goodman hyperventilates about the removal/vandalism/destruction of Confederate and other monuments then ongoing -'toppling symbols of racism'. Angela Davis manages to get a Marxist talking point or two in edgewise.

1968 Chicago - Black Panthers take a rather different approach to dealing with local displays of Confederate symbols by their white, displaced hillbilly neighbors.

Quite a contrast - does one or the other of these strike you as the more constructive?
