Friday Night Photos Big Bad Moon Edition
Submitted by Socialprogressive on Fri, 04/03/2026 - 5:00pm
Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.
On April 1st we had a Super Moon. No fooling. So I went to Harbor Island on San Diego bay to catch the moon rising over the San Diego skyline. Most of the day was cloudy so I was worried they would obscure the view of the rising moon, but the photography gods were kind and most of the clouds moved on by moon rise. The first two shots were taken while waiting for the guest of honor to show up.

Some might consider this a full moon. LOL
BTW
Once again your images continue to impress.
Hi, humphrey
Love the political cartoon, though I have to admit that would be one full moon I'd have no desire to photograph.

Great moon shots
Somehow the moon appears bigger than life
as you capture it. We had an obscure sky for
the occasion.
BTW, why is NASA shooting four astronauts
around the moon? Seems silly.
The rainbows end -
Thanks for mooning us!

Hi, Q
Always happy to moon you. Hope you find the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow.
Going around (and landing on) the moon in the 60s was a great accomplishment. Today, not so much.

That would be a long distance moon but I get the message. LOL

Moonlight over Lotus Pond
Been trying to find this one since yesterday. Posted this about 6 months ago. English translation:

Love your photos SP. I really never thought about why the stern of the carrier was called the fantail. Brings back memories good and bad. I don't know that this is literally true, but poetically speaking in the eastern tradition, no matter where one may find themselves, we all can see the same moon.

Hi, soryang
Thanks for the beautiful song and English translation. I only spent four years in the navy. And while it wasn't all lollypops and rainbows, the good times far out weighted the bad times and I would not have gone to Japan, Honk Kong, Singapore, Korea, and the Philippines. All of which I would love to go back and visit again.

Sounds like a great experience SP!
My navy duty was just over 6 years. My carrier duty took me to the med for 7 months and various workups in op area near Jax, went to Fallon, Gitmo, PR, etc., with the air wing. I worked with two bomber squadrons. It was a very rewarding experience briefing operations and intel, but I either lost friends and colleagues in aircraft accidents or saw aircrew killed or almost killed in dangerous situations (repeatedly) which affected me adversely. I was disappointed to not go to the language school. So I got out and went to law school.
Later in the Army, I was stationed in South Korea for about 3 years. During that time I only had the chance to visit Taiwan on vacation and barely stepped foot in Japan enroute to South Korea couple of times However, I traveled widely in South Korea, and made a start on learning the language and culture. Because of my role as an attorney in the Army, I was not popular with my superiors. After being forced off active duty, they requested and then ordered me back to active duty in 1994, particularly because of my effort to learn the language and my ability to act as a guide in the country. I would have gone gladly, but we had purchased a small business with my separation allowance and signed a contract, and made commitments I could not walk away from.

I made three westpac cruise's
in my four years and we would always lose at least a half a dozen sailors during the cruise. I was fortunate none of them were anybody I knew.

Same theme on the moon...
I found this poem on East Asia Student several months ago. I think this is what I was looking for when I first saw your great photos. The memory isn't what it used to be-

Thanks for sharing your experience SP.
