You Will Own Nothing...And Be Happy

16:21

All I can say, folks, is hang on. We're all in this together and don't expect help from the government, unless, of course, you are a billionaire and can afford to buy politicians.

Hope you're doing well!

I thought for awhile I wanted a van...not exactly an RV, but easier to drive.

There are many YT channels devoted to van and RV nomadic life. Here's one of the most popular.

I also got into the idea of sailboat living. Here's one of many examples though I don't know this couple.

In both cases, the idea of being mobile and free to go where you want, as well as being self sufficient in power and so on, is appealing. Being forced into the situation due to poverty is not!

Becoming an expat is also a liberating notion. Someone somewhere on the site recently reported the rise in self-deporting.

However, in all the above cases I come back to my love of our place here in the holler. Adventure sounds like fun, but stability and being grounded has its attraction as well.

Like the pioneers of yore, many were forced to go as you piece describes, but some chose to go.
This old Alabama folk song describes a situation sometime in the 1800's...

Thanks for the clip. We live in troubled times my friend.

@Lookout had a comment about ex-pats in my OT yesterday.
I have had several clients decide to move into RV or Tiny Home communities full of mostly retirees. I can't imagine a retiree living in a tiny home with stairs. Stairs and old age are not a happy coupling.
Lots of rv livers go to state or national park camp grounds, but must keep moving every couple of weeks, more or less. It is a nomadic life.
You can camp, but can't reside in them. Trump has been on a mission to sell off public lands, so they may be privatized soon.
To live in a desirable country, you must have sufficient assets to show you will never require government assistance, and they typically bar you from working and competing with locals for income. Banking is iffy. Foreign countries do not afford protection of accounts in times of economic collapse. Most countries require ex-pats to bank with them.
I looked and looked back in the day. I remain here in East Texas.

@on the cusp

There are many companies that help expats get all that set up long before they leave. Also, lots of expats just come and go in various countries — digital nomads — for six months at a time. They do this for years. I know a lot of these folks. There are really good books and legal services that help people learn what they need to know, depending on the their destination country. And there are many online communities of expats and professionals that help each other. Being an expat is not necessarily a permanent thing. Or a full time thing. Most expats are not trying to become citizens of another nation. So banking is not a big thing. It's very ordinary to have a small local account in one or more countries, for access to cash.. Most just want a resident's visa, if they find a place they want to live for awhile. Most return to the US or travel back very frequently for visits with family and vacations. Very few expats become immigrants. A huge number of expats work remotely in the United States.

@Pluto's Republic now than 30 yrs ago. More information is available, for sure. I just can't imagine a place out of reach of an antagonistic US.
I will stay put, deal with the devil I know.

of the ongoing massive wealth transfer from our wealth and assets to the parasite class.

This particular housing problem can be somewhat offset by homestead exemptions, for now, but that does nothing to curtail the largest source of that giant sucking sound, inflation, that has set its sights on all of us.

The goal is to take it all, starting with the those with the lowest net wealth and working its way up the ladder.

Last year, otc and I split on a $4,000.00 older 26' RV that was in good shape for the money. We gifted it to otc's secretary for her birthday. She's a late 30's single mother struggling to make ends meet, especially with affordable housing. She was so grateful to have at least a little security, in lieu of a worst case scenario, of a just-in-case roof over her and her children's heads, if needed down the road. She cried when we gave her the birthday card that gifted the RV to her, free and clear. She's like a daughter to us.

About expatriating, where does one go that insures a better living opportunity? Especially when there are rouge governments that act like vultures that feast on the wealth of sovereign nations, after strong arming them with "democracy", of course. Pretty much no place is safe, that has now been proven.

a "fixer-upper" at the low end of the scale in a desirable
location with low taxes and a decent mortgage rate. We
worked like hell to pay off the note while I was able to do
90% of the renovation. Problem is insurance, taxes and
utilities have almost tripled in 30 years.

Like others, we have become somewhat attached to
the home and are getting 'up there' in facing a major
lifestyle changes.

COLA increases are only a small fraction of inflation.
I feel bad for young folks or mid-lifers unable to break
the spiral. The American dream is a marketing campaign
to shackle consumers in debt.

Zionism is a social disease

@QMS
my son who makes over $70,000 per year wants to buy a house but is having trouble finding one that is affordable. I recently found out my 21 year old granddaughter is pregnant and her and her beau are looking for a place to own. Oh, man! When I look back on it how blessed were we growing up during the peak of western civilization, before the vultures ascended on it.

Home ownership is a fluid concept. Yes, you can own it, but you will still owe rent to the local taxing bodies, schools being the largest of those taxing bodies. I don't know about Texas, but back in Illinois there are no caps on capital reserves that schools can squirrel away. They are allowed to save millions in reserve, and then when renovations or expansions are needed they can propose huge bond outlays to be voted on by the local electorate, which are passed most of the time. The kicker to this is many years ago the Illinois State lottery was set up to allay the costs of education, but the lottery funds went into the state's general fund and were promptly used for purposes other than education. Politician's need perks and pork, don't ya' know.

which is disproportionate in the extreme.
The majority of funds go to administration
followed by teacher salaries, staff, transportation,
and building expenses. The school only provides
for classes K thru 8. Older kids are shipped out
to various surrounding systems which we pay on
a per-head basis.

What is weird the student population has been
shrinking as young families can not afford to live
here. Class size shrinks, salaries grow. It is just a
big money machine unquestioned by the town
council in spite of a median age of being about 65.

Zionism is a social disease

@QMS @QMS inherited 11.3 acres, which I later inherited from him. I bought a home that was maybe 40% complete, moved it here, then with friends, my Dad, clients, and some contractors, I finished it, paying for the work and materials at every stage. I have never paid a home mortgage. I bought an adjacent .63 acre, and have no desire to purchase more and enlarge it. I have added 800 sq. ft. of living area, and might add on one more room one of these days.

Glad to see you posting. Hope you're doing well.
I'm so glad my house is paid for. I'm also thankful Ca. has prop 13 which locks in property tax at 1% of purchase price. Without it I can't imagine how outrageous my property tax would be. As it is I'm paying over $4.5k a year.

and good for you.

Texas has a tax relief proposal on the table as well, we'll see how that shakes out since they have various ways of getting their pound of flesh. This tax relief was proposed this year by Governor Abbott, who happens to be up for reelection, also this year, so I wont hold my breath.

Almost every election Texas has a proposal entertaining property tax relief and the voters always overwhelmingly pass them, but the proposals are non-binding and quickly disappear into the ether until the next election.

I've been keeping tabs on your Big C fight though otc. Smile Lost quite a few loved ones to that oncologist scourge. Worldwide pollution just enhances it. The latest haves-vs.-have nots battle has me rolling my ancient eyes. It's been going down since the dawn of recorded human history, and in some previous prehistoric form. It never ends well. I'm staying put in ECFL for several reasons:
*Age;
*Both houses F & C (real estate speak for paid for);
*Language barrier;
*Family**********(most important).
Capt. Hi-Tech (retired) and I have done all the traveling overseas, and throughout this country via motorcyle. We live simply with 2 bratty Beagles. Everything paid for. Only $outlays$ are food, drink, and expenses from the Health-Care-System-From-H3ll. Second house is rented to a very good renter. So, this is turning into a book! Give otc a hug from me. You both stay safe!! Rec'd!!
