Friday Night Photos Bill Of Rights Edition
Happy Friday everyone. Welcome to Friday Night Photos your once a week escape from the day to day insanity of the world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music or whatever else you find of interest that helps tune out the madness.
On Tuesday the camera club had this month's shoot at the J st. marina in Chula Vista. Only one other member of the club showed up besides myself which was a disappointment. On top of that, it turns out there's no public access to most of the marina. The day was not getting off to a good start. This dark cloud of a morning did have a silver lining. The one area the public did have access to was The Bill Of Rights, a two masted schooner. The Captain, Don Johnson (No, not the actor) and another crew member were onboard and were good enough to allow us to freely wander about the boat.
Here's a link to their website with a little history about the boat and what it's used for.

Pop Quiz What side of the boat is this? No fair PMing Capt Q for the answer
I got a line on you. For all the land lubbers out there, it's not rope , it's line.

It appears as if you took advantage of a less than ideal
situation.
It is tough to determine the size of the boat from your first image but the rest seem to say that it is not indeed small.
Hi, humphrey
The boat is 136 ft long. The mast is 115 ft tall. 6300 sq ft sail area and weighs 129 tons. It's not small but it didn't feel big while walking around onboard. The spaces below deck were a little tight and cramped.

Just from your images I can gander
.
this is a commercial vessel
(the 12 person life raft box on deck)
gives it away. private yachts do not
bother with such niceties.
looks to be about a 65 tonner
old fashioned rigging and in fair
repair - thanks for setting us afloat
off to Maine manana to play on a
much smaller body of water

Hi, Q
According to the stat sheet the boat weighs 129 tons. It's in pretty good shape for a working boat but there were areas that need work.
Thanks for the JB tune.

Wow
Hell of a lot heavier than she looks.
That is about 2x what a similar vessel
made today would weigh. Which is good from a
mariners point of view. We like the displacement
value when operating in the undulating seas.
Especially with canvas aloft!

She's a little overweight
but she hides it well.
Nice Enya selection. It's been ages since I've heard it.

Hi Q
I hope your time in Maine is as sweet as the song.
Just from your images I can gander
My favorite tune by the late, great waterbug and shipbuilder himself! Thank you, QMS!!

Add the Enya tune to the list. I have the CD and it is otherworldly and excellent.

Old school
wooden boat. Gaff rigged- very tidy. And I like the ratbars instead of ratlines. Makes going aloft much more pleasant…
I fell in love with a smaller schooner years ago. Classic lines, but a more modern rig- the standing rigging is stainless with turnbuckles, instead of the wooden deadeyes there, and aluminum masts instead of wooden- but with proper wooden spars. Fore-and-aft rig, but with a square forecourse, mostly so we could run a rope swing off the yardarm. So I guess she was actually a hermaphrodite brigantine, rather than a schooner, but who’s keeping score. And the greatest sin of all was she has a fiberglass hull. Product of Fong Kuo shipyard in 1978, built as a fishing vessel, but refit for 10 passengers. 101’, 69t. Back before I retired from diving, my wife and I made some money cleaning her bottom now and again- but that’s another story altogether…
She lives in Grenada, and still works the passenger trade 48 weeks a year. I miss her: her name is Diamant… Gotta find a picture or two. I like big boats and I cannot lie. She’s purty with that Yankee (the trapezoidal staysail) flying, and she flat scoots, being that light…
Made it home intact, and decided not to zero out my phone. Didn’t get hassled, either, because there were other people who weren’t in on the joke for them to screw with.
Twice bitten, permanently shy.
almost unbelievable
there are posters on this site
who possess an affiliation
with nautical leanings
as well as me
thanks

Hi, ufs
I never had the sailing bug. My dad on the other hand loved to go sailing. Hope you can find pics of Diamant. We'd love to see her.

Beautiful boat, ufs
I hope your dreams come true.
Hi Social, and all
Thank you for the photos. It looks like a beautiful boat to preserve, and the clear blue, cloudless day looks spectacular. We’ve hardly had anything but rain for what seems like forever.
The one clear day and night recently left its mark on the window …
Be well all
Hi, janis
We've had a lot of sunny blue sky's this spring and summer. Thankfully it hasn't been really hot yet. We had a dry winter so we could use a little of your rain.
Cool shot of the flower blossom on the window.
