Friday Night Photos Birds Of A Feather Edition
Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
The week got off to a rocking start Monday morning with a 5.2 magnitude earthquake centered between Ramona and Julian which is about 30 miles northeast of where I live. I was out with the bird watching group for our monthly bird walk when it happened. It was kinda funny hearing everybody's cell phones all start chiming with an emergency alert messages right after it hit. A moment's pause while everybody acknowledged the message on their phone then right back to bird watching. Oh look! A Common Yellowthroat.
Our bird walk this month was at Santee Lakes. It's breeding season for the Wood Ducks and they were in abundance.
Great Horned Owl. I hear them all the time at night. This is the first time Ive seen one during the day out in nature and not in captivity.

Wow, your feathered friends are amazing

Glad the quake didn't shake up your bird stroll.
The owl and wood ducks are awesome.
Elvin and Charlie do great stuff together!
Think I may have posted one called What the Hell
earlier this week. Same vein.
Cheers.

Hi, Q
After you posted "What the hell" I looked for it on spotify. I listened to their other songs and also liked "Birds of a feather". Added both to my play list.
Nice Jethro Tull selection.
I told myself I need to stop drinking.
But I'm not about to start listening to some drunk who talks to himself.
By the looks of it Mr and Mrs Wood Duck might have a bit of a
problem fitting into the opening of that potential nest.
Hi, humphrey
As small as the opening in the nest boxes are the females manage to squeeze inside.

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great bird photos as always SP.
When nesting, (now for Great Horned Owl) they can often be found out in the daytime, especially when there are young to feed.
I can't remember if Wood Duck takes a 3 or a 4" hole. Great pics of them.
Always love a male Cinnamon Teal ...
Thanks for the OT and great photos!
I gotta fly...
happy trails all!
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Hi, dystopian
The owl was nesting. According to some other bird photographers that were there the owl has possibly two chicks. Unfortunately we didn't see any chicks while we were there.
According to what I read on All About Birds, The Wood Duck can fit through a 4" opening.

Sp, I sound like a broken record,
but, oh well... Great photos!
My fave is the Red-Winged Blackbird. You're not kidding about the ducks. Duck love's in the air. Those males are very colorful. Thanks for the quake update. We're in a dry spell down here, low humidity, too. I'm working a GOTV table today on this Earth Day/Easter weekend. I always enjoy doing these events cos I'm around politically intelligent folks, young and old. Anywho, you all take care. Rec'd!!

Hi, obf
That's one broken record I don't mind hearing. I've been trying to get a good shot of the Red-winged Blackbird in flight but so far no such luck.
Hope you had success at your GOTV event today.

Take note of where that owl was on the tree -
most people look too high up and too far out on the limbs

Hi, el
This is from All About Birds.
Great Horned Owls typically nest in trees such as cottonwood, juniper, beech, pine, and others. They usually adopt a nest that was built by another species, but they also use cavities in live trees, dead snags, deserted buildings, cliff ledges, and human-made platforms.
In this case the owl was using a natural cavity in a Sycamore tree.

Thank you
for this breath of fresh air.
Beautiful pictures, especially of the owl!
Thank you, Linda

Hi Social
Thank you for the wonderful feathered friends photos.
The intensity of the owl's gaze, and the perfect symmetry of the wood duck is a treat.
Happy holidays al
