Hamlin Marsh April 16th, 2016

The Hamlin Marsh Wildlife Management Area is about a mile from my house. At some point, I'm not really sure when, the DEC put in a wheelchair accessible hunting blind. The parking area and trail to the blind, as well as the blind itself, are a prime birding area. All a two minute drive from my front door :).

One of these days I'm going to get my Porta Boat down to Davis Road access...

On the evening of April 15th I stopped at the blind. I was not able to get any good photos, just good enough for ID. I saw a Golden-crowned Kinglet and a Brown Creeper (a life bird). I also saw a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

So I went back this morning to try again.

Dipped on the Sapsucker and Golden-crowned, but got the Brown Creeper. It's really hard to get a picture of one, they are always in motion...

At the blind the usual birds. Northern Shoveler, Ring-necked, Mallard, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, and lots of very noisy Canada Geese.

The local Osprey made a quick pass.

A song sparrow was singing away.

On the way out I was looking for the Golden-crowned Kinglet. I found several Ruby-crowned Kinglets instead. Tiny little birds way up in the trees. I'm glad my camera has 24 MP so I can crop a lot...

Even got a bit of the red crest. They don't usually show it...

Wonderful photos!

Brown creepers are among my favorite birds to watch. I like the way they walk up a tree truck and then fly down to the bottom of the next tree.

Where we used to live in the southern mountains, kinglets liked tangled vegetation fairly close to the ground. They were migrants and fortunately usually went through before the foliage had matured for the season.

We had a turkey wander up from the marsh. She walked across the front yard then headed around to the woods in the back.

Beautiful pictures, and such a needed respite from the usual news.

with the water reflection is spectacular. As well, the down-wingbeat, see individual feathers as evanescent. I assume you share with LoO at Cornell? Widespread coverage for your pix from there...

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

I share on the Facebook page once in a while. But most of my Facebook posting is in the Birds of the eastern United States group. I've posted a couple in the rare birds feed on Flickr. There was a Harlequin duck in Oswego harbor last year, I posted a 2 photos in the Flickr group and they are my 5th and 6th most viewed photos. I just joined the Birdshare group on Flickr, so I'll be sharing there too.

A. What sort of bird would dare land on Hillary's podium?
(i) vulture
(ii) Raven
(iii) goshawk
(iv) Klingon Bird of Prey

B. What is your favorite color?

C. If the speed of sound is 350 meters per second, and if the earth travels around the sun at 3,000 meters per second, why can we still hear Trump and Cruz when they start bloviating?

D. If roses are red, violets are blue, leaves are green, and Hillary's eyes are crazed, what color dildo did Ted Cruz use to pleasure himself in college?
