South Korea: Pre-emptive regime change?

The top video at 11 sec mark, I believe shows 5 term PPP leader Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun, present again at a scene of potential violence, the Constitutional Courthouse. He has had extensive ties to the US, and the US flags are waving all around him. Police are preparing for any violence at the CC and other government locations, that may break out when the CCs final verdict on the Yoon impeachment is announced.

Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jeong who has worked for President Yoon in the past, blocked the team prosecuting Yoon from appealing the judgement to release him from detention.

South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung faces assassination threat, sparking police probe

South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party on Wednesday requested police protection for its leader Lee Jae-myung after uncovering an alleged plot to kill him, forcing the politician to skip a scheduled rally protesting against suspended president Yoon Suk-yeol.

A party spokeswoman said the group was tipped-off about the plan involving retired secret agents scheming to eliminate Lee using Russian-made contraband guns.

“Many lawmakers, including the party’s leadership, received text messages claiming that there is a plan to smuggle in Russian pistols to assassinate Lee Jae-myung,” Hwang Jung-ah told reporters.

I heard a right wing pastor recorded on video at one of the Gwangwhamun pro-Yoon rallies on stage threatening the three liberal justices on the Constitutional Court and specifically threaten the life of the judge who presided over the impeachment hearings. It wasn't Jeon, it was another.

This is an account based on the South Korean Armed Forces reporting on the accidental bombing on a civilian village by a section of two ROK Air Force F-16s:

Pilots missed multiple chances to prevent bombing of village that injured 33

The pilot of the second plane, who had entered their coordinates correctly, was apparently so focused on maintaining a close drop that they released their bombs upon the orders of the first plane’s pilot without realizing that the coordinates were off. The exercise that the pilots were drilling involved two fighter jets dropping bombs simultaneously in order to concentrate firepower on a particular target.

“Because pilots can become spatially disoriented, such as mistaking the sea for the sky, they should rely on their instruments when contact flying proves difficult,” an Air Force official told the Hankyoreh. “But when they can verify the lay of the land and it is possible to contact fly, as it was at the time of this accident, they should trust their eyes when there is a discrepancy between what the instrument tells them and what they see.”

“A pilot would face no penalty for not dropping an ordinance they weren’t certain about and returning to base during a live-fire drill if what they were seeing with their eyes did not match what they were seeing on their instruments,” the official said.

There are a couple of other pilot mistakes described prior to those described in the excerpt above.

@QMS

I'm beginning to see the denials in the original US statements related to Yoon's Dec 3 plans by Goldberg and others in the usual plausible deniability context.

This alleged Christian minister would sell his soul for another million dollars, wait he already has, so selling out his country comes easy. Found this in a column in Japan Times on Pastor Jeon who pretty much mobilizes most if not all the street support for suspended president Yoon. Japan Times is a pay site. I'm hoping this loads.

South Korean pastor vows revolt against Yoon's impeachment

...Evangelical preacher Jun Kwang-hoon is one of President Yoon Suk Yeol's most fervent defenders, calling Yoon's December 3 martial law declaration a "gift from God."

He has been prepping his followers to take action for weeks, and Yoon's release from detention over the weekend on procedural grounds has turbo-charged the 68-year-old's sermons.

"If the Constitutional Court decides (to impeach him), we will mobilize the people's right to resist and blow them away with one swoop of the blade," Jun told hundreds of supporters during a service held Sunday outside Yoon's residence.

Authorities are so worried about the potential for violence after the Constitutional Court issues its ruling on Yoon that police have been granted special permission to use pepper spray and collapsible batons if his supporters get unruly.

This confirms what I heard on an MBC news short that reported Yoon supporters outside the Constitutional Court gate were crying out "all out attack on the court.." It also reminds of the old WACL.

TK over the Blue House in his new newsletter says the failure to appeal the release from detention order for suspended president Yoon contradicts 70 years of legal practice by prosecutors in South Korea. He say's in his analysis that the decision was "baffling" and the non-appeal directed by the prosecutor general was "even more astounding."

TBR Weekly Update: Week 1, March 2025

In a controversial ruling, the Seoul Central District Court 서울중앙지방법원 ordered Yoon Suk-yeol 윤석열 to be released from prison as prosecutors declined to appeal. On March 7, Judge Ji Gui-yeon 지귀연 sustained Yoon’s challenge to his pre-trial detention, finding that the prosecutors had failed to apply for pre-trial detention in a timely manner, i.e., within 240 hours of his arrest.

The Criminal Procedure Act 형사소송법 provides that the prosecution may detain a criminal defendant for up to ten days before petitioning for pre-trial detention. The court’s decision in Yoon’s case upends 70 years of precedent, dating back to the beginning of the Republic of Korea, of counting detention periods by days, not hours.

Liked your OT today QMS. I was hoping to find something appropriate to post there but my google algorithm is AFU.
