Graphite and Glitter

In 1982, Reagan was giving the world a preview of Trumpism and the hippy wave of the 1960s had broken and was slipping back to sea. Donald Fagen of Steely Dan took a nostalgic look back at the experiences of us Baby Boomers in a solo album called The Nightfly. Its lead song called "IGY" took us back to the 1950s and the feeling of optimism that defined our lives at the time.

I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World) - Wikipedia

The "I.G.Y." of the title refers to the "International Geophysical Year", an event that ran from July 1957 to December 1958. The I.G.Y. was an international scientific project promoting collaboration among the world's scientists. Fagen's lyric discusses the widespread optimistic vision of the future at that time. . . .

The irony of the song was painfully obvious in those early days of the Reagan Revolution:

Standing tough under stars and stripes
We can tell
This dream's in sight
You've got to admit it
At this point in time that it's clear
The future looks bright
On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six we'll be A-OK

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

Get your ticket to that wheel in space
While there's time
The fix is in
You'll be a witness to that game of chance in the sky
You know we've got to win
Here at home we'll play in the city
Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets one for everyone

What a beautiful world this will be
What a glorious time to be free

43 years ago, we were obsessing about Soviet Arms and That Wall in Berlin that symbolized the evil loose in the world driven by Moscow. Optimism no longer meant a pleasant life for ordinary people. Instead it meant believing that we could and should kick the Soviet Union's ass under the "strong" (ie, not liberal or wimpy) leadership of the first Sleepy Joe, the doddering Ronald Reagan.

Fagen's solo album perfectly summed up the Baby Boomer experience of citizenship during the television era.

Similarly, this first six weeks of Trump Part Deux are all about his claimed project of Making America Great Again, to restore the Dream that Fagen celebrates. This is not to praise or in any way approve of the personality of Donnie Shrimpfingers.

I think the opposite. Politicians get rich in the 21st Century because they help their campaign contributors get richer. Their job is not to run the government which runs itself. Their job is to put on a dramatic show of struggle and triumph.

Jesse Jackson used to address this ugly truth about our society -- "Keep hope alive!"

Your flat screens tell you that is craziness. Be afraid! The Wrong Side might win!

"New Frontier":

Yes we're gonna have a wingding
A summer smoker underground
It's just a dugout that my dad built
In case the reds decide to push the button down
We've got provisions and lots of beer
The keyword is survival on the new frontier

Introduce me to that big blonde
She's got a touch of Tuesday Weld
She's wearing Ambush and a French twist
She's got us wild and she can tell
She loves to limbo, that much is clear
She's got the right dynamic for the new frontier

Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city
'Til I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas

Do you have a steady boyfriend
Cause honey I've been watching you
I hear you're mad about Brubeck (Brubeck, Brubeck)
I like your eyes, I like him too
He's an artist, a pioneer
We've got to have some music on the new frontier

Well I can't wait 'til I move to the city
'Til I finally make up my mind
To learn design and study overseas

Let's pretend that it's the real thing
And stay together all night long
And when I really get to know you
We'll open up the doors and climb into the dawn
Confess your passion, your secret fear
Prepare to meet the challenge of the new frontier

Trying to get laid in the family bomb shelter. That is definitely a favorite album...

@usefewersyllables "The Goodbye Look"

I know what happens. I read the book.

The colonel's standing in the sun, with his stupid face, the glasses and the gun.

From memory and I am pretty fricking old. . . .

@fire with fire

of Fagen's work is just spectacular. He was definitely a big influence on my songwriting style.

"Bad Sneakers", from "Katy Lied", 1975:

Five names that I can hardly stand to hear
Including yours and mine
And one more chick who isn't here
I can see the ladies talking
How the times are getting hard
And that fearsome excavation
On Magnolia Boulevard

Yes I'm going insane
And I'm laughing in the frozen rain
Well I'm so alone
Honey, when they gonna send me home?

Bad sneakers and a piña colada, my friend
Stompin' on the avenue by Radio City with a
Transistor and a large sum of money to spend

You fellah, you tearin' up the street
You wear that white tuxedo
How you gonna beat the heat?
Do you take me for a fool?
Do you think that I don't see
That ditch out in the valley
That they're digging just for me?

I saw them play years ago down here in a small auditorium. Needless to say, they were wicked bad! Smile

is of course what motivates this Time magazine (online) piece: "U.K., France, and Ukraine Agree to Work On Cease-Fire Plan for Russia’s War in Ukraine," dated day before yesterday. Here's the most amusing part:

The steps toward peace would: keep aid flowing to Kyiv and maintain economic pressure on Russia to strengthen Ukraine's hand; make sure Ukraine is at the bargaining table and any peace deal must ensure its sovereignty and security; and continue to arm Ukraine to deter future invasion.

These are all, of course, last-ditch attempts to keep the war going, having nothing to do with peace.

sounds Orwellian
"war is peace"
or maybe
"truth is classified"

question everything

The fundamental rhetorical/propaganda strategy is to make the war or peace argument about who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. Not only does this obscure the question of what is in the best interest of the American people, it also obliges any opposition to war to defend Saddam or Putin and their "evil." Even Bernie S and AOC fall for this gambit.

It's all noise unrelated to what is really going on.
