Friday Night Photos Ocean Edition

Welcome to Friday Night Photos everyone. Your once a week break from the daily madness of the crazy world we live in. Post any photos, memes, music, or whatever else you find of interest that helps you escape the madness.
I went to La Jolla Cove last Sunday morning to check out all the usual suspects that hang out there. It's a little early in the breeding season for the Brown Pelicans so their numbers were down and I didn't see any in full breeding colors, but the Brandt's Cormorants breeding season is in full swing with a lot of blue throat patch's on display and nests covering the cliff sides.

Nice selection of photos
The seals are cool and the birds are colorful.
Heading down into the high 20s tonight but clear and dry.
Tomorrow night having a bowling party with the whole family. Had to reserve 3 lanes for all of us (about 20).
Should be a lot o' fun.
Thanks for the tunes too.

Hi, e1
It's been in the low 30's here the last few mornings. Daytime high has been in the low 60's.
Your family bowling party sounds like a lot of fun. I haven't been bowling in a few years. I love the game. I need to go again soon.

Hi Social
The colouring of the Brandt’s Cormorant couldn’t be in more perfect harmony with the ocean's colours. The Tern above the last surfer looks like the epitome of surfing style ; ).
Thank you for all the beautiful photos, they are truly a pleasure to see.
I like how the female voice in the Zeppelin song compliments his music.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you, Janis
I'm pretty sure there's no female vocal on that song, but with Robert Plants high pitched voice I can see where one might confuse it with a female voice.

Thanks for the correct gender and voice
I'll listen again with different ears ; )
heh...
to the best of my knowledge, this is the only song that led zeppelin ever recorded with a female voice on it. they chose well, it was sandy denny.
Thanks joe
That was a fantastic collaboration in sound! I am off to listen to some more Sandy Denny.

Hi snoopy
Thank you for the beautiful, and mysterious, and amazing surfing video!
I would be happy just to see the waves
My first trip to camp at the ocean I woke up because of the crashing of the waves and dragged my 2 dawgs down to the beach to watch them. At 2am.
I can watch waves for hours.

Hi, snoopy
Yee Haw! is right. That will get your heart pumping.
Thanks for posting the video and link. Give Sam a belly rub for me.

Yeah I wonder how tired his legs were
I’ve watched this numerous times and focus on how the wave breaks at the top and makes rivers in it.
The ocean cleans my soul every time I see it.

Hi, Janis
That's a really nice selection of B&W photos they put together. Thanks for the link.

Those are great
I love b&w photos. I’m thinking of putting a darkroom in my basement and getting back into it.
Gosh. This pulled a memory of when I was first learning about photography in college and the assignment was b&w from around town. We have huge grain storage buildings that I took photos of.
These 2 are my favorite.
The look on the dawg’s face is priceless.

I tried to choose a favourite,
but couldn't. The two you chose are among my favourite 30! If I had to, I might have also chosen your first selection.
I was also transported back to the days of b&w photography and the darkroom. I felt very nostalgic with such pleasant memories.
Great seal shots SP

Yes, me too. I think this is like trompe l'oeil.
Here are some examples from Paris.

Cool
Love the staircase mural. I think more cities should have art like that just so it can give people something to smile about.

lol…
I can’t either. I have a drawing app and got a step by step tutorial to draw a dawg house. How hard is it to draw one line and then another and draw one? Apparently for my brain it’s very hard. Something in the spatial aspect?
Doing math and reading poetry is very uncomfortable for my brain. Dunno if it’s my head injury or just my brain.

Hi, Q
Beautiful birds.
I wonder what the inspiration was for the half tourist?

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Just here to eat some crow for my massacred post last night. My APOLOGIES for the Caps Lock!
Thanks for the OT and outstanding bird photos! GREAT work man!!
I would say however the Terns are both Royal Tern. The bill is deep, broad and robust at the base. It is a stout tern bill. Elegant is a long thin fine tern bill. The gonydal angle which is that sharp angle along the lower edge of the lower mandible (bill) . This angle is far out the bill, about two-thirds of the way. And the bill is stout, tapering quickly after that point. On Elegant due to the long thin bill has the gonydal angle near the half-way point of the bill. With a long fairly even not strongly tapering anterior portion of bill. On the top first pic a more square on profile would be better to judge from, however the bill is simply too robust at the base to be an Elegant tern. Coupled with the distal gonydal angle, I am confident these are Royal Tern. As mysdys says, terns are hard.
I gotta fly so not sure if I can find a pic...
Thanks again for all the great bird photos!
happy trails all
Edited to deunbutcherify post, ... and eat crow.

Hi, dystopian
Thanks for the finer points on the difference between the Elegant and Royal Terns. I concur with mysdys, terns are hard.
Hope you're able to get back later with a pic or two.

That Brandt's really got me. I didn't know they have blue
coloring. The bird photos are so clear and detailed. Such beauty.
I don't know how the YT algorithm pointed me to the amateur film about Anna'a Hummingbirds, but I've been meaning to share it with you for a few weeks.
We've had below freezing temps especially at night for several weeks. Many days are not making it above freezing. We are running our pellet stove/boiler and the Jøtul small woodstove one at each end of the house. The underfloor water pipes are keeping up for the most part, but the air temps are showing how much mass of rock and air must be heated to beat back the cold.
Quite a few days are windless and cold sun, so I make big pots of soup outdoors on the propane canning stove and fire up the small table top kettle bbq to cook a whole chicken or pork roast. Works great even in cold temps.
We have between 30 and 40 Mésanges, both Bleu and Charbonnieres, (Chickadees) feeding on Sunflower and fat balls. They are really going through the food. Such little birds survive the cold somehow.
I have a theory that if six or eight Anna's couple were released here they woudl handily survive. This environment is rich in what the need. So many flora and fauna here are not 'native'. When we ask about this the puzzled looks we get from Burgundians is now predictable and funny.
Happy New Year everyone and thank you.

hummers
Great to see you, and thanks for the post and vid!
Hummingbirds are strictly a new world family, of about 370 species. In the old world the primary bird filling that niche are Sunbirds. Not as agile as hummers, but often incredible metallic plumages. And in the land down under, Honeyeaters fill that niche. All three families are nectar feeders and important pollinators.
We have THREE Anna's Hummingbird here now for 10 days, all three are immatures (less than a year old), two males and one female, and one of the males is doing display dives at the female! We have more teens for lows and some freezing high temps for next week, so we will be swapping warmed feeders out all day for a few days.
take care, be well!

Hummers are one of our most missed birds.
Also miss the California Quail, Swainson's Thrush, Western Wood Peewee, Varied Thrush (my dad called them Alaskan Robins), Blackheaded Grossbeaks, various Owls - although we have the very verbal Tawny Owl all around us. These are the sounds of my entire life which are not here.
We do have the new sounds of Nightengales, Blackbirds, which really are a Robin in black; Eurasian Orioles, Cuckoos, which sound just like the clock; Huppe, a truly spectacular birdy.
We have Foxes which sound just like the soundtrack of Masterpiece Theater, but no Coyotes.
So many birds, so little time.

Hi, Dawn
Below freezing temps, Burrr! Not for me. Hope things warm up for you soon.
Thanks for the hummingbird video. Which reminds me, now that the temps have dropped and the ants have gone into hiding for the winter I should rehang my hummingbird feeders. When it gets hot the ants are everywhere and will swarm the feeders within a few hours after hanging them.
Helpful hint. If you have hummingbird feeders you can make your own nectar by mixing 1 part sugar with 4 parts water.

Many of us are cheering the cold for nothing more than
I remember one Hummingbird which somehow got glued down with sugar water. It was awful. We slowly poured tepid water on the poor bird and got her loose. It took awhile to warm her up but we succeeded and she finally flew away.
Sun which gets us up to 36°f is acceptable working and walking weather. We have had some super frosty mornings with the low sun, so very pretty.
We are watching Venus, Jupiter, Mars and maybe Saturn? In the evening we seem to walk into twilight and when it's clear we watch the stars and planets come out. It knocks us out.
Even with all the awful things we do down here, there they are reliably reappearing each season.
Cheering JtC on as he works on the new site. Hoping for an easier photo loader. I take many photos which I don't seem to get enough time to share.
Thanks so much.

Thanks Dawn, for the intimate look at anna hummingbirds
The video is a beautiful expression of the faithfulness of his love of the hummingbirds.
I normally won't get on here and post when
I'm grumpy. I am today. Great photos, but when I see these surf nuts tackle gigantic waves, I am NOT impressed. Most of my problem is mental: I am sick and tired of living in a world which is rapidly going backwards! FWIW, you all always deliver. Sp, your pics keep getting better. Photography is painting with a camera. Plenty of excellent examples on here.
Rec'd!!
