Friday Night Photos Sport Of Kings Edition

Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

San Diego has a horse racing track at the fairgrounds in Del Mar but I'm not a gambler so the ponies don't hold much interest for me. In the 47 years I've lived in San Diego I've been to the track a grand total of one time and that was 30 some odd years ago. Last Sunday I made my second visit there when I went with some friends to celebrate a birthday. One of those friends has a connection at the track and was able to get us into the paddock and along the rail for one of the races. It was a fun day and everybody had a great time and even though I didn't bet any money I felt like a winner just for the opportunity to photograph something new and different.

Getting a chance to be real close to the horses, I was amazed how fit all the horses were, even the ones the track workers were riding.

Hey folks, it looks like there won't be an evening blues this evening. My power has been out since the wee hours this morning and the utility company doesn't seem to be in any hurry to fix it. Meanwhile the eb that I put together is on my computer...

I will post it when the gods of electricity get their act together.

I always worry in the worst way that something bad happened. Phew!

Out of the blue we’re getting rain. What a nice surprise and a lovely smell. Only got to 94 today. Yay…a cool down. Sure has been a long, hot summer.

Great pictures, SP. we used to drive to Wyoming to watch the ponies run.

We don't get summer rain often, but I love it when we do.

I have some good memories of the time I shared with my late younger brother at Roosevelt raceway. We worked together there one summer selling pretzels outside. After I stopped doing it, I learned he continued to work there, and would spend some of his meager earnings there betting on the trotters. I guess I was a bad influence, but I had never bought more than a 2 dollar ticket.

He became good at picking horses and reading the tip sheets. He took me to Aqueduct one time, and I placed my minimal bets on his picks and won over a hundred dollars. As I recall, his heavier betting resulted in several hundred in winnings. I was astonished.

Later when he became a successful young lawyer in the village representing musical acts, he went to the Kentucky derby when he could. As teenagers, we watched a great trotter together at Roosevelt one night, called Superwave, such a great horse.

Great action pics SocialProgressive. Brought back some great memories. Sorry if I told this story before, every time I see race horses I remember the happy times with my bro.

Hi all, Hey SP!

Awesome pony pics man! Great looking horses too. Runnin' machines.

What surprised me most when a horse bolted was first how bumpy it was at first as it gained a head of steam, and then miraculously when it got to a certain point (the one at which your neck breaks if you fall) it smoothed out like glass. It is astonishing. You quickly go from 'how the hell am I going to stay on this thing?', to 'run baby run' in a couple seconds when it smooths out, at what feels like just below the sound barrier. Never felt anything like being on a horse at full speed ahead for a mile or more. My riding time was mostly dirt one track roads along the Owens River on east side of Sierra Nevada, through sagebrush. We smelled so good afterwards...

I'll get back in a few with a pixel or two...

Thanks for the GREAT horse pics SP!

happy trails!

You clearly have the same talent for any subject. Nice that you had a new experience to enjoy and record. I especially like the triangle of the three horses together, and the start of the race. I was rooting for the zebra horse. That jockey made me realise just how much they can make themselves into just another layer of the horse.

I remember photos, but not the subject of moving or still objects that you played with using a slow shutter speed or moving yourself. Did you try it out with the horse race?

Thanks Social

@janis b
When you say the zebra horse I'm guessing you are referring to the horse being ridden by the jockey in black and white striped silks. If so, you put your money on the right horse. It and the jockey won that race. I thought about trying some slow shutter speed panning shots but decided to pass on it.

for the pixel people

Hi all,

First, let's see if you can guess...

poly080724e_0.jpg

poly090724a.jpg

Have you guessed me yet?

I got the rare moth alert call on the machine and by 10 a.m. was at the general store. Shirley said she counted 17 earlier, there were 13 still there when I got there. Clearly some females had attracted a gaggle of male suitors. This is another of America's fancy Silk Moths, the Polyphemus Moth.

They are about 5" in wingspan, some larger.

Thanks for the puzzle. I guessed the first one as a moth, but I unsurely thought the second was some kind of desert dried flower and strange seed pod.

I love the photo of looking up at the two moths and revealing so dimensionally their shape, and seeing them from underneath. It looks like their arms are stretching out their wings like the arms of an umbrella. Wonderful!

Here are a few photos from the morning after the landslip, to its restoration a year and a half later. Sorry that I can’t capture the sense of depth in the photos. I feel very satisfied in its resolution and the choices I made with what was possible. It's quite a beautiful transformation of the land. I will very much enjoy watching the young growth become bush.

The morning after …

5 days later, laying the polyurethane for protection which did it's job well for a year and a half …

2 weeks ago, an exciting start toward its restoration ...

All finished …

Be well all and enjoy the weekend

they should still get ample rain, and as the sun is growing higher and the warmth starting to increase, it should be ideal. Hopefully we don't get too many harsh weather events in the meantime.

Hi Janis,

GREAT photos! The greatest value of these photos will not become evident for some time. But you will be soooo glad you took them! I have worked on a number of restoration projects, and this is how they all start out looking. Next thing ya know, like magic, nature burstin' out all over the place! Smile It looks awesome. Can't wait to see how your garden grows!

be well, take care!

6 horses, loafing in a pasture with a carefully mowed power line right-of-way running diagonally through it, shot just after sunrise so that the sunlight is coming in just barely above the horizontal. The horses are untacked, no riders are up- I’d have to say they look very happy to me. At least two of them (second and third from the left) are wearing fly-sheets. That’s a great example of either drone or aircraft photography…. Cool image!

are the horses themselves. The shadows of the legs meet up with the feet on the ground, partially obscured directly under the bodies of the animals- that’s why the bodies kind of look like bases. You can also see the nicely-spaced power poles only by their shadows, since you are looking nearly vertically down. Wonderful perspective view. The fly-sheets were the giveaway for me…

are wide across the hips, and narrow up towards the head. I guess I’ve mucked too many stalls, and put on and taken off too many fly sheets…

On the third horse from the left, the fly sheet is light gray, and then you can see the roan (reddish) neck extending up and off to the right. Maybe that’ll help it pop for you!

Flip your phone upside down for another look..

janis b's picture

@snoopydawg

is that they are shadows because you can see the texture of the ground through the figures. What figures they are, I have no idea. Possibly shot from a drone above?

dystopian's picture

@snoopydawg I have seen two photos that look just like this.

One was camels and the other elephants, taken at first or last light when shadows longest, from overhead. This almost looks like a crop of the elephant one. Maybe it was and altered? They appear to have large heads with trunks.

cool pic. Smile Yo, now we're talkin', Sp. Longtime horse nut here. I rode bareback and western saddle. Hubster had me up on a gentle, beautiful mare who was a brown and white paint about 3 years ago. His work pal owned a small ranch, and the wife ran a horse riding trail business. Touristas loved it. Their animals were beautiful, and wonderfully cared for. I have always believed horses are among nature's most beautiful creations. Unfortunately, the Sport of Kings is badly tainted by the usual combo of $$greed and corruption$$. soryang, I love the trotters and harness racing, too. Read some great horse books, and yes, I saw Seabiscuit. That book is a great read! Great photos, gang! Smile Rec'd!!
